^ driving westbound on 40/64 is pretty cool; great views by the IKEA too with the 100 crane; if Koman gets that Cortex building right by the highway that will be really an eye-opener for folks passing through. Anyway, I think that drive separates significantly denser Saint Louis from pretenders like Nashville and Indy.

btw, are you back living in Saint Louis or just visiting?

I'm actually interning in Cortex this summer, so yes* for a few more weeks. I visit very frequently, however.

It's great seeing The One Hundred crane from all the various points around town, and knowing that the actual tower will be some 100 feet taller than the crane itself.

BTW, I was on the 10th floor of BJC's Center for Advanced Medicine recently, and I gotta say, it's a great view from up there. The view north down Euclid towards the CWE looks great, especially with the addition of One Hundred's crane.

Are you referring to this proposal?

If 300 S Broadway gets going as well then STL will have more cranes than any other time that I can remember.

^An acquaintance from Austin has seemed hell bent on humbling my bit of craneish glee, but . . . what are we up to right now? Nine? One at Centene, down to two at Wash U, one for 100, two for SLU, and three for BPV? Am I missing anything? I don't really expect that the apartments on Grand near Magnolia will require one. Nor anything I can think of right now in CWE apart from 100. If Barnes gets moving on their Queeny demo the new structure will require at least one, and maybe two depending on what they plan, but . . . I like Queeny. It will make me sad.

On the other hand, with the phased way things are going we could end up hovering pretty close to this level for a while. Maybe. With luck.

I believe the crane is still up at the First Bank renovation on North Meramec in Clayton.

300 South Broadway will certainly need one (assuming it's a go). Also the Forsyth/Brentwood apartment tower. And the new hotel next to the Clayton Police HQ (ten stories). Maybe the Element Hotel on Forest Park Blvd. near SLU (seven stories) and the AC hotel on York (seven stories).

- The Sarah and Manchester Office building has a ground breaking on September 1. Its 7 stories tall.
- If Foundry Phase II gets a go.

^Completely forgot the Clayton bank reskin. Might have blocked it out of trauma. ;-)

The other projects make it sound hopeful that things will stay busy for a while.

Couple of crappy crane pics I snapped from a street parking space in front of my buddy's place in the CWE.
The neuroscience building is going to really fill some space.

Random thought I had...but with demolition underway at the Residence Inn in Clayton and Delcrest Plaza should we start seeing some more cranes pretty soon?

If I'm not mistaken there is a base at 310 DeB, I could definitely see one at the Residence Inn in Clayton, BJC will have a 400ft tall demo crane at Queeny within the next week or two...

Maybe another 3 or 4 coming up pretty soon?

Delcrest Plaza/The McKenzie seems too short for a crane. The previous plans would've required one, but not the shorter plan.

The cranes I know of that will go up throughout the year are...
  • Hudson/310 Debaliviere
  • Residence Inn - Clayton
  • Queeny Tower Demo
  • 4210 Duncan (if it restarts, but indications are pointing to it)
  • 1801 WashAve (depends on when it starts)
  • 1014 Spruce (again, depends on when it starts)
  • 6630 Delmar (again, depends on when it starts)
Potential cranes...
  • Expo at Forest Park - South Building (unclear at this point in time)
  • Wildhorse Village condo building (10-stories, depends on when it starts).
However, the following cranes will come down before many of those even go up...
  • Clarendale
  • AC Hotel Central West End

What indications are pointing to construction resuming on 4210 Duncan?

I've seen a few guys on site taking surveys recently. And with a corona vaccine starting to get out there, I imagine that lenders for 4210 and the developers have their hopes up more.

Hmm, not sure why the current developer would need surveys...sounds more like an indication of a potential sale.

For whatever it's worth, the BJ quoted the developer several months ago stating that their main tenant pulled out, and they didn't want to proceed with a purely speculative office development.

The two neuroscience cranes and the 4545 crane look pretty cool when driving 40 westbound on the Midtown viaduct.  The neuroscience cranes are also dead center when approaching Kingshighway on 40 eastbound.  Forsyth Pointe's cranes are visible from as far west as 40/270 and line up pretty good with 170 when entering from 40.  I was driving so no pictures, unfortunately.  But some good crane porn spots if you can find a way to safely take the pictures.

So now that AC, Clarendale, and 310 are down...what do we have coming up in the next year or so?  Provided all these are still moving forward at some point...starting downtown and moving west:
1801 Washington (1)
1014 Spruce (1)
1501 7th (1?)
Cortex K (1)
4210 Duncan (anyone have any gossip on this?) (1)
4490 Lindell (Optimist) (1)
BJC Ambulatory Cancer Center (1)
BJC New Patient Tower (2)
6630 Delmar (1)
Residence Inn in Clayton (probably the next one up) (1)

Did I miss any?

Many of you know more about this stuff than I do so these are mostly guesses.  I would imagine 1501 7th probably won't use a crane.

BJC new patient tower would be only one crane. SOHO/1501 South 7th is unlikely to include one because of the shorter height. Cortex K would be Cortex MX (apartments). Others you missed are...
  • 40 Grand (Armory Tower 1)
  • Armory Tower 2
  • AC Clayton (construction should begin after the completion of the AC Central West End)
  • Bemiston Place
  • Olive Crossing Office Building (since it got taller)
  • Jesuit Hall Phase 2 (if it's not cancelled)
  • Unannounced FPSE project (announcement pending)
  • Unannounced Central West End building (announcement likely within 6 months)
I would've included 121 South Meramec but that project was cancelled. So that's what we have in the pipeline for now.

^ Well I’m glad to see I missed a few.  Only reason I added two for BJC’s new tower is because Parkview used two cranes and was a similar height/design, (though I think Parkview may have a larger footprint, and of course this is provided the design is similar, that could be different).

Looking forward to these potential announcements you speak of. Hopefully that CWE one is near the corner of Lindell and Kingshighway…

So what do we have going now? Chris has six on his map: two at Forsythe Point, two at BJC, one at 4545 Laclede, and one at the Residence Inn. Additionally there's the one at the Mercy Outpatient Center off Ballas. All should be easily visible from 40. That'd make seven. Anything missing from that list?

Just the soccer stadium!  (I know we're not counting those as tower cranes though :) ).  But still visible from 40!

Residence Inn has its base in place, so that will be going up soon.  BJC just put up construction fencing at FPA/Taylor (Ambulatory Center), so I assume one will go up there in the next few months.  So in the immediate future, that puts 4 in the CWE, 3 in Clayton, and the one at Mercy Hospital.

Would be nice to see one of the Armory towers, Cortex MX, and maybe 1014 and 1801 in downtown break ground before the year is out...but not sure how realistic that is.

I guess we could add the future residential expansion to City Foundry to the list.  I don't think those are supposed to start until next year, but they're not too terribly far out.

^The further out stuff gets the more likely it is that the ones in use now will simply move across town. All that said, I'm glad to see we're maintaining a healthy pace for a while at least. :)

After a little sleuthing tonight I found out the new Ambulatory Cancer center will have both an East and West crane and the Neuroscience building will get a third (h/t to urbanitas).

That puts us up to 6 in the CWE + 3 in Clayton + 1 at Mercy for 10 at the moment.  Sounds like the Ambulatory cranes and the third Neuroscience crane will go up sometime in August.  Actually kind of looking forward to my late-August appointments at Barnes-Jewish...should be some good pics.

Edit: Looks like we might see a crane for the new BJC patient tower by this fall.  Edit 2: May see some action on the Foundry too.  With 1014 Spruce getting the OK downtown, hopefully we'll see one there too.  Cortex K, the Optimist site (🤞), the first Armory tower, 1801 Washington, and Bemiston Place seem like good bets within the next year.  Pretty soon we'll be getting back to these days and more:

Others would be the office tower in the Yawitz project, 6630 Delmar, and the AC Clayton (supposed to start upon completion of the AC on York).  Haven't heard much on 6630 Delmar and the AC in Clayton in quite some time though.

Chris, There's also a tower crane up at the P&G plant in north city @ Grand & 70
Anyone able to find out what's going on at P&G?  I did a little digging but haven't found much.  I wonder if they're building a new office building after demolishing the historic one.

The crane is up at the south portion of the plant, so it seems more likely to be a manufacturing expansion.

Must be a very substantial manufacturing building to require tower cranes...
