^ The timeline isn't particularly encouraging - it could mean this week or we could be waiting until spring. I imagine this would mean the team would play in 2010?

^ I don't necessarily think we are looking at 2010 yet. The plan was for MLS to announce within about 2 months of the Collinsville vote. It has been less than a month at this point, so as long as MLS announces Dec. 1, I think it will still be 2009. Perhaps Cooper can use this to put a little pressure on MLS to announce sooner rather than later.

I still think Saint Louis is next in line. I think it is Seattle and Philly for the last 16th spot. I think the 15th spot is already decided and it is us.

I long for the day when I can drive to Clayton/CWE/DOWNTOWN, park my car, drink all day, and take metro-link to a match. Luckily for me, this fantasy seems to gain more and more real-life credit every day. And I like the idea for the team to be called the Knights, although they might have to re-work the green color scheme (damn, I really like that) to something including black white and silver (would still make a damn good uni, think Newcastle.)

Can't remember where I read it, but some news outlet wrote about Cooper saying it's too early to name the team (since we don't even have it yet), but that he thinks 'St. Louis United' has a good ring to it. This would fall in line with the desire of some teams to buck the American-esque naming to be more like the Euro leagues.

I think Knights is an awesome name if they go the conventional route, and actually don't think St. Louis United sounds too bad either.

I think the current thinking among Saint Louis Soccer fans is Saint Louis United with the nickname of Knights that is given by the fans.

United & Knights = U-Knighted. So the names fit together somewhat. It could all change of course. I wouldn't expect us to have an official name for at least 6 months to a year from now. However, during that time, it team will generally be referred to as Saint Louis United because of the company's name, Saint Louis Soccer United. So, by that time, the name may have stuck unofficially. However, Cooper will want to generate interest once season tickets officially go on sale, so perhaps he will come up with something different just to generate more interest.

In the EPL most teams have names like United or FC but also have nicknames.

Arsenal FC: Gunners

Liverpool FC: Reds

Tottenham Hotspur FC: Spurs

Blackburn FC: Rovers

Even Manchester United is technically Manchester United FC...

Let’s keep it simple: St. Louis F.C.

Nickname could be the "Cardinals” => St. Louis Cardinals Football Club.... again we could have the St. Louis Baseball Cardinals as well as the St. Louis Football Cardinals… and this time they wouldn’t be sharing a stadium…It could bring back old memories and give Dierdorf & Harts some new marketing options. Plus everyone in STL already has some Cards gear (or at least something red)... so the cross over aspect of marketing could be appealing....

No offense, but I absolutely hate the idea of calling this team anything close to anything having to do with the cardinals. St. Louis F.C. is fine, but leave the cards to the cards.

Yeah, I don't want to have to say "Im going to the baseball Cardinals game tonight. The team that plays at Busch stadium. In St. Louis."

I think keeping the red theme would be a good idea. Kinda like Pittsburgh Steelers/Pirates/Penguins type of thing.

Somebody earlier proposed St. Louis Meth.

We have a team with red and white, a team with blue and white, and a team with navy blue/gold-ish. I'm hoping for some black, I think it'd be nice to have a dark and imposing jersey.

The meth might work, they could just rip off the jersey's sleeves...cut some holes in it, and they wouldn't wear shoes. Could work out perfectly!

And that somebody would be me...but all players have to wear mouthguards that make it look like they're missing various teeth, dirt lip mustasches, and date girls that look like Amy Winehouse after a show and a bottle of wild turkey.

Since I fear that may drive a few players from our free agent pool, I think we should look to those names UMSL's student body chose in a landslide, but were scorned by Administrators:

1) St. Louis Archers FC (Triple meaning=Mascot+Arch+Bending free kicks)

2) St. Louis Hellbenders (rare salamander found only in our region on the Mississippi and Missouri). Give em hell, while bending it like Beckham!

Chicago Fire (who would name their team after one of the worst calamities the city has ever faced) meet your new rivals: The Hellbenders.

YES!

I'm a big fan of the Hellbenders. Not so sure how we would get that sanctioned by the MLS though...

And occasionally would the players have to commit a meth-induced murder suicide? Or would that part be exempt?

The 5-0 (nice law enforcement analogy + US World Cup team that beat England).

The Flood.

The Plague.

The Twister.

. . . any St. Louis disasters I've missed? (btw - I'm lamenting that StL will never have a fire as spectacular as Chicago's - one more example of us being a second-class city! )

How far is this from their historic main street / downtown? Will this development help or hurt main street?

I guess my real question is how close are the two mentioned areas to each other. I'm looking all over the internet for proximities but can't find anything. Can an Ill side person help me here?

^ It's ~3miles and on the other side of two Interstates. Someone else will have to comment on what's currently in Collinsville and how it may be affected.

^ I looked on Wikopedia but it didn't have much info. I googled the city but I didn't see much there either.

I've been through some really nice historic downtowns in Ill. I just hope the proximities don't kill off downtown.

p.s. I just learned that the largest super wal-mart in the u.s. is in Collinsville, it is a horseradish capital of the world too! (nice i don't shop at the mart or eat horseradish  )

One thing, you'll never have to refer to which game you are going should the city have another team named the Cardinals. For one, most people simply say 'The baseball game', it's understood which one. When the football Cardinals were here (american style), it was the Cardinals, and the Football Cardinals.

But I like United FC. I think it makes sense with the image they are trying to go with, etc.

I guess really there aren't too many baseball games that happen during football season, so I guess that would render my argument useless.

Some names that are being/have been proposed;

St. Louis Custard

St. Louis Cardinals Baseball Team Soccer Team

Metro East Sprawl

Metro East Vinyl Siding

Greater St. Louis Area Soccer Team

St. Louis Soccer Team

North/East St. Louis Bullets

North/East St. Louis Crack-Induced Double-Homicides

Nort/East St. Louis Decapitations

Metro East Finally On The Winning End of The 64/40 Shutdown As Far As Soccer Games Go

(by time the team is playing here, 64/40 will probably be opened back up, so they withdrew this one)

St. Louis But Not Really (cause its not actually in STL)

Brooklyn/Sauget/W. Park/Centreville Strippers

ESL Nose Candy

Those are some names that have been proposed by Cooper, but the MLS already said some of the names are too long.

My favorite is Saint Louis But Not Really. We could be the Butts.

On the Collinsville downtown thing, I know Shimmy will have a fit, but I have never really found Collinsville's downtown to be that great. It is hard to get to and really doesn't compare to the other downtowns in the region such as Belleville or Edwardsville. Old Collinsville sort of spreads out around 159 instead of being totally centered around main street.

That said, I don't really think this will have an effect on it at all. I don't think it will help it because it is virtually impossible to get from where the new stadium will be to downtown Collinsville. You are probably looking at an 8-10 min. drive and by that time you can almost be at Laclede's Landing. The quickest way to get between the two places is probably jumping back on 255 and then getting off on 255, but anyone who is already back on the interstate will probably just stay on it.

On the other hand, it is far enough away the new development will probably not steal too much business from downtown. Downtown is already surrounded by residential, so there is always going to be some retail and restaurants there.

The real challenge for Collinsville is going to be keeping the visitors (and their sales taxes) there after the game is over. Cooper's development around the soccer park itself will help, but Collinsville would be well served to encourage more development in Eastport Plaza along 255. Presently, most of the development in Eastport is along I-70. They need to provide dining and retail options within 5 min. of the stadium. Currently, much of the development in Eastport is right on that 5 min. border, but it requires the visitor to drive past 4-5 cornfields to get there. Anyway, that is going to be Collinsville's big challenge. With Laclede's Landing and Fairview Heights both only about 10 min. away, soccer fans are going to be tempted to spend their dollars there after the game.

I live three blocks south of Main Street and downtown Collinsville is pretty dead. I frequent the liquor store to pick up a soda or a candybar and sometimes go to either the Sandwhich Shop(local favorite, though resembles a truck stop) or the new Friday's Bar, which is really nice with plasmas and stuff. Other than that there's a comic book store "Dizzy Dugout"(ah the childhood memories), Ashman's Pharmacy and a pretty rough Dollar General. That's about it. There's numerous vacant storefronts and the coolest building in town, the old bank building at the corner of Main and Center, has sat vacant for years. Downtown is really situated near some of Collinsville's rougher patches and there are often some pretty rough characters in the area.

All in all, efforts to revive downtown haven't worked and it doesn't appear to be making a comeback anytime soon. There's really no business to steal from downtown.

Oh, and there's Miners Theater. Which is really neat. My cousin is part of the group that puts on shows in the theater every so often and the building has a really interesting history. It was paid for entirely out of donations by the city's miners and has stories of rape, murder, etc. The shows are certainly nothing you'd see on Broadway and don't usually attract a large crowd, but its fun nonetheless.

I drove through beautiful downtown Collinsville and wow it was a little backwards.

Main street is a "one way" street so if you walk along the sidewalk against traffic, it feels like a highway. The street has a sense of being rushed. There were actually a lot more dog walkers than people enjoying outdoor dining areas. Actually, I only saw one family dine outside. The street is very dead but the automobile traffic is intense. ..it's just so weird.

There are a lot of sidewalks under demolition now. I'm not sure why. Most intersections have painted crosswalks and push button pedestrian lights. The street looks poised to be a vibrant hot spot. ...if...

they would make the street 2-way!

I think the downtown is nice. I just hope the proposed MLS development isn't the nail to seal the coffin so to speak.

I'll upload photos whenever i get a flicker account.

:D
