As a resident of the moorlands, I am excited that I can walk to a grocery store, even just to pick up one item... This news makes me smile! With the ability to walk to a metro link stop, coffee shops, downtown clayton, restaurants, and now a grocery store, one could truly get along without a car... LOVE the moorlands...

I get seriously angry every time I go into the CWE store that they're giving arguably the best neighborhood in the city the worst Schnuck's I've ever been in. It's an embarrassment to the company and an insult to the CWE residents. I feel like that whole suburban-style shopping center needs to be leveled and redone from scratch. I try to just avoid it altogether.dweebe wrote:On a related note:
it looks like the long-suffering Brentwood Schnucks is getting a decent remodel. Since it's similar to the CWE store, one would only hope they do the same thing there.
Completely agree. Besides Schnucks, which is always very busy, I don't know what any businesses are overly successful within that strip mall. Maybe the Pizza Hut and Qudoba, but those are close to the street. I think that 5 Guy's is going to close down soon. Whenever I drive by it is always empty, and they have a ton of seating space in there so it looks pretty bad. Maybe they have a big lunch crowd.
Nothing on their website yet of "announced leases".

I want to say I'd been in one of their stores and then it came to me: they took over the "old" Borders in the Garden District in New Orleans. So they're not afraid of urban areas: might be a good sign for other locations in St. Louis City.

The problem with that intersection is the SW corner is a giant privacy fence, the SE corner is a useless little green knoll that backs up to another privacy fence, the NW corner is pushed way back from the intersection by a very weird intersection that further subdivides the NW corner into two wedgy corners, the intersection itself is big and ambiguous, and because of the way Hanley is developed south of that, there is very little reason for people to be at that corner. So the reason there is no obvious use for the corner is because there is not a real reason to be at that corner. Until someone buys and razes the SE and SW corners of that intersection and redevelops S. Hanley as something other than a privacy fence wasteland, I don't see much awesomeness happening with this site.
^ I would think housing would work if you could get it dense enough to make the numbers works. Beyond being surrounded by privacy fences you have to wonder if the value of the land is just too high if you built to match the surroundings.
The other reality, I don't how it works for hotel either nor do I think anyone on this blog would really get excited about it.

Wasn't there a high-rise proposed for this site when the Schnucks first closed? Maybe if the momentum keeps building in Clayton they'll go ahead with that proposal, though I would prefer that all new high-rises are near MetroLink stations instead.
^ Agree on that one. I think Clayton would be better off if the Tri proposal that was close to the Forsyth metrolink station was revived before a high rise gets off the ground here.
Which gets back to question in hand. Outside of the former grocery store. It does seem like a tough sell to get something going here when you got a lot of competing spaces not only in Clayton itself but the CWE/I64/hwy 40 corridor in general.

The update is that Fresh Market has signed a letter of intent and in November provided the funding for a traffic impact study. St. Louis County is working on that study.
As for the south side of Clayton at Hanley (which is Richmond Heights), those neighborhoods will get redeveloped after we all have flying automobiles, but before the city of Ladue disincorporates and bulldozes itself.

That's good to hear since their website shows nothing. I was just afraid this spot would still be sitting unused in 2024.Presbyterian wrote:The update is that Fresh Market has signed a letter of intent and in November provided the funding for a traffic impact study. Yeah, I doubt their website will show anything until every detail is finalized and a lease signed.

Just got city of Clayton newsletter today. In the mayor's letter he states that "Work will begin soon on a new Farm Fresh at the former Schnucks market site at Hanley and Clayton Roads."
Looking forward to this, as I could walk to a grocery store.

Weren't there plans to build a high-rise there at one point?

"Farm Fresh"? Wasn't that supposed to be a Fresh Market? It'd be pretty disappointing if they've pulled out.

It's still going to be a Fresh Matket. See page 4

Yes, just look through pages 1 through 8 of this thread and there was a lot of talk. But that was also 2007-2009.Gateway City wrote:Weren't there plans to build a high-rise there at one point?

Excellent. The Fresh Market is awesome. Anyone ever been inside one?

I usually stop at the one in Jackson, MS on my trips to and from New Orleans to get food to go. It's quality. About as big as Whole Foods, with a broad selection of deli, prepared, and dry stuff. I don't even know about produce or butchery, because I'm only there to get a sandwich or a wrap; but the place is good, not crazy expensive, and well-designed.
been in one?
yes
they are scattered around Florida
Great store, somewhat like Whole Foods but without the food bar
And generally a more relaxed atmosphere than Whole Foods
And a GREAT bakery selection!

There's one down the street from us here in Memphis and I'd never been until recently. I'm sure there is some variation between locations, but this one seemed smaller than a Whole Foods to me, almost like if TJ's and Whole Foods had a baby who looked a little more like Whole Foods as the kid grew up.
I didn't study the entire place but can attest to the great bakery selection as I was picking up some dessert to bring to a party. Just passing by the rest and taking in the clientele, it should do well in the proposed location.

I haven't heard or ready anything since the update in the newsletter I posted a month ago. Right now the parking lot is being used for construction worker parking for the new Central Presbyterian Church addition.
