^Is it that big? Do you mean family arena sized?
- 1,864
No. It's not a normal arena sized interior. But it is big enough for an indoor track and small playing field. Nothing regulation probably, but still big enough to hosts fun events.
I think whoever leads the Armory needs to update the roof to be retractable. Maybe not the entire roof but large skylights that can be opened. I like the sports idea, I'd prefer they have extreme sports in addition to soccer or basketball. Rock climbing, skating, or paintball with additional soccer fields or basketball courts.

Here's a link to some interior pics of the Armory. There looks to be enough room for some things like a rock climbing wall and maybe a few smaller things but not really enough room for multiple types of courts. I'd guess IF it were to be a sports complex we'd see a multiuse floor with movable walls for different types of sports. I highly reccomend looking at this interior pics:

^ that's exciting stuff and great to see fast movement.... it's a bit unclear but are you reading this as I do that the office and retail component for the foundry building will also be part of this initial phase besides the food stuff. Regardless, if this project is a success it should be a big boost for the rest of East of Cortex plans as well as the CWE/Midtown/Cortex area as a whole.
I wonder if the railroad trestle conversion into a a pedestrian greenway is on track (pun intended) for the 2018 opening. At the initial announcement for this project a few months ago, Steve Smith of the Lawrence Group stated that the trestle component was absolutely critical to the project. Very very very exciting.
^Good question. I hope so! This is great news and a huge surprise!! There's so many exciting projects on the drawing boards—Centene, Union Station, Soulard, Grove—it's hard to keep track. Nice to see this one get started so soon.

^ really surprised by the quick start on this... I assumed this would be laying around for awhile as brownfields tax credits, etc were pursued.
Here is link to article that Alex/Nextstl references. Seems like a lot for the immediate area to take in unless Lawrence Group is pretty confident that CORTEX/Wexford continues pace of development. I wonder if this is expressing some confidence that Cortex East has a lot more interest then might be aware of.

In a few weeks, local architecture firm the Lawrence Group plans to break ground on City Foundry Food Hall & Market, a multi-use building that will feature offices and retail space in addition to a food hall and a handful of restaurants. The project is located just east of Cortex in the 3700 block of Forest Park Avenue. The food hall will be located in the Federal-Mogul building, with plans to build another 100,000-square-foot building closer to Forest Park Parkway. The plans also include parking garages, a residential tower and green space, in addition to a possible market.
City Foundry will feature around 40 spaces for retail, primarily outside of the food and beverage industry, in addition to the food hall, which will feature up to two dozen food kiosks or stalls. The concept may also include three to five full-service restaurants. Brad Beracha of BaiKu Sushi Lounge in Midtown is working with the Lawrence Group as director of culinary services for the project.

I noticed on my way into work today that they're already advertising the project - they have a few shipping containers stacked up by 40 with the name of the development, URL, etc.
City Foundry

http://www.cityfoundrystl.com/Located in the old Century Foundry building, City Foundry St. Louis will be a unique and exciting mixed use development located in St. Louis' urban core. We are a public market that showcases and nurtures creative and innovative ideas revolving around business, retail, food, performance, fashion and the arts.

Lawrence Group also has a letter of intent for 30,000 square feet of retail space, said Smith, who declined to identify the potential user.
Curious who that'll be. What usually go in spaces that size?
^ I'm amazed at the statement to the fact that first phase will include 124,000 square feet of office space & he stated that tremendous amount of interest in that space. Also notes parking structure in first phase.
Kinda wonder why Sansone ever proposed what they proposed in the first place. I know they are big box stores developers but sure good news that Lawrence Group got their hands on the property and owner of Bull Moose is all in as an investor. You can't help to get the impression that some outside capital is making its way to St. Louis

The food portion was a given, they'll have that filled up, hopefully it stays full. I mean I'm not sure what Sansone was doing as Lawrence group already has a pretty large retail presence signed up. So glad this has worked out so far as Sansone development is as boring as it gets
Soulard Market is obviously beloved by just about everyone, but in many ways I think this will be what Soulard Market should be - a 21st century food hall.
Soulard market and this food hall are just two different ideas, they don't really do the same thing. Correct me if I'm wrong but the foundry food hall with have tenants that sell their own food whereas soulard has tenants that act as grocers

If in fact they have this huge interest from potential tenants it may be a catalyst for the region, showing developers that people, and in turn companies, want interesting developments. The traditional strip mall is not where people want to spend their time.

^ the project could burn down the city.... so great to see this.
I think the retailer who this will be is one of these 2...joelo wrote:Lawrence Group also has a letter of intent for 30,000 square feet of retail space, said Smith, who declined to identify the potential user.

1. A Target Store
2. A Walmart Store.
The nearest Target Store is at the corner of Hampton and Chippewa in South City, And the Walmart is in Shrewsbury on Chippewa past the Frisco Line Bridge. It would be smart for one of those retailers to move in there. Its prime real-estate and it will be a great convenience for the students at SLU and Harris-Stowe to go shopping and get necessities.
^ Do you mean a CityTarget or a Walmart Marketplace which are much smaller footprints that are inline with square footage noted.
I would say you might be onto something with a CityTarget. Fits the area, the demographics of a healthy number of students with a growing workforce nearby who would frequent the food mall and pickup something on the go while not competing directly with food venues. Certainly wouldn't vindicate Geoff a while back for suggesting that CORTEX was going to land them but he was given some relevant info at the time. Now we might finally see how it all plays out at the end

Yes, a CityTarget or Walmart Marketplace, either one would be great for the Midtown Community.dredger wrote:^ Do you mean a CityTarget or a Walmart Marketplace which are much smaller footprints that are inline with square footage noted.

Too small for a Target. Even a flexible-format city Target would be much larger. Too large for a Trader Joe's.chriss752 wrote:I think the retailer who this will be is one of these 2...joelo wrote:Lawrence Group also has a letter of intent for 30,000 square feet of retail space, said Smith, who declined to identify the potential user.

That's about the size of a Crate & Barrel. (Notice "Box & Cartons" in the rendering. But that may just be a placeholder.) But I wonder whether they're in expansion mode. I also spot "BC3" and "East Elm" in the renderings.
That's also about the size of some grocery stores, and I could see a high-end grocer pulling business from South Grand residents.
