Here's the companion story. Great that MoLeg gave this industry a big gift via the I-70 rebuild and widening subsidy. That could cover a lot of  safety gaurds.

Policy idea - the state funds a ped/cyclist safety grant program at $1M for each death.

RFT - Pedestrian Deaths Increased 7.5 Percent in Missouri in 2022

One hundred twenty-nine pedestrians were killed by drivers in Missouri in 2022 — a 7.5 percent increase from the year before and one of the 10 biggest percent increases in the U.S.

Good idea, but it would take the state caring about ped/cyclist safety beyond actively discouraging it.

Kind of used to seeing bumpers and headlights strewn about on the curbs. Entire wheels and doors, not so much. That Tesla did not hold up well to that crash.

At least the US Grant statue looks mostly undamaged.

This story pretty much has it all.

StlToday - Old Monroe: Where everyone knows somebody who died on Highway 79

They enjoy a nice buffer in retirement from all the population growth hitting Lincoln and St. Charles counties.

“Of course, it’s much busier than when I was a kid,” said Vehige, 69.

Soon, emergency responders did their work and traffic in both directions was rerouted for four hours.

“He took a young kid’s life. No fault of his own. It was just an accident.”

nine people were killed within the same half-mile stretch of the highway ... since 2017

“I feel like you never get over that loss,” said Gratton’s mother, Virginia Hepperman, 45. “She was such an intricate part of our family.”

“Everybody loves the life out here,”

In 1987, a bypass was built to accommodate regional population growth. It killed much of downtown but provided a much bigger bridge over the Cuivre River and a higher speed limit.

“We lack the resources to be able to enforce these speed limits,

In the past 18 months, he said, they’ve written citations against two drivers going 107 and 103 mph in the 60 mph zone of the highway; 36 citations for driving in the 90s; and 63 in the 80s.

Every random person around Old Monroe seems to know somebody who has died on the highway.

None of them were wearing seat belts but officials said it likely wouldn’t have mattered.

Apart from the devastating toll on family and friends, some emergency responders are dealing with post-traumatic stress from the April 29 crash that killed three teenage girls and a young woman.

Blevins, the fire chief, said he’s asked the Missouri Department of Transportation for lane improvements on Highway 79.

“I can’t tell you how many times I’ve saved myself from a head-on collision,” she said. “They are passing on a double line.”

If I'm not mistaken, this is the scenic road that several people have suggested I should take if I go ever go up to Hannibal or beyond.

I don't know when I am ever going to make it to Hannibal, but it makes me think twice about ever driving that road until I hear about improvements.

^Yeah, that's the scenic road to Hannibal. It's not the scenic part of the road, but it's the same road. The south end is pretty straight and flat, which is why they're having problems just there per the article; people flying down the straightaway and losing it in the curve at the bridge on the bypass around town. The scenic part really starts at Clarksville. Don't think twice. Take it. Yeah, there's risk, but it's not really out of keeping with any other bad patch on a road and we all drive through them from time to time. Just exercise caution. (And push for reform to make your local transportation better, safer, and fairer.)

Over 70 yrs later and we still can't find the courage to implement safety mechanisms to reduce underside crashes.
Also I didn't realize there were AVs in 1949.

StlToday - 1949: Coverage of a crash that took the lives of 5 St. Louis teens

An inquest will be held tomorrow in the deaths of five teenagers killed early yesterday when a convertible coupe in which they were riding crashed into the rear of a loaded cattle truck on United States Highway 66 in St. Louis county.

It's a shame some of the smaller, lighter, cheaper, more fuel efficient, less resource intensive cars are the most dangerous because of what else is on the road. It contributes to the arms race.

It's an important distinction to make that these are deadliest/most dangerous for the driver. While I certainly won't fault anyone for prioritizing their own safety over those outside their vehicle, it should be noted that large trucks & SUVs still cause the most deaths on the road, it's just usually not the driver in those collisions.

There's a curb cut and a little ramp/hill/embankment whatever you want to call it in the yard at the corner of Kingston and Terrel to launch off of.

Beyond this incident residents say speeding is chronic on Kingston Dr. It's a state road, MO 231. MoDOT is looking a what to do with it. There's a public meeting July 27th. It looks like a good candidate for a 4 to 3 lane diet.
