Construction fence to go up on 08/12/13

Construction barriers to be built starting Aug. 12

On Aug. 12, contractors will begin installing construction barriers along Kingshighway, Parkview Place and Forest Park Avenue to accommodate demolition of the Jewish College of Nursing and the Kingshighway, Yalem and Steinberg buildings. Demolition is slated to start later this summer.

The Campus Renewal Project is a long-term project to renew the medical center campus on Kingshighway Boulevard encompassing BJC’s Barnes-Jewish Hospital and St. Louis Children’s Hospital along with Washington University School of Medicine. The vision is to transform the campus over the next 10 years through renovations and new construction, creating an environment and experience for patients that matches the excellence in medical care they expect.

“The barriers along Kingshighway, Parkview and Forest Park Avenue will be among the first visible signs of the project,” says Cary Cantwell, campus renewal construction manager. “Interior demolition of each building is underway. Exterior demolition will start as interior demo is completed.”

Containing the site ensures the safety of those outside the site and will accommodate the movement of construction vehicles. One lane of northbound Kingshighway will close Aug. 12 for the duration of demolition and construction.

Love the first rendering, not so crazy about the bottom one. Are those two sides of the same building, or are they alternative designs?

^ I'll venture a guess that it's two sides of the same building. The top rendering shows the north facing side of the building (East McDonnell Building is visible on the right), the bottom rendering shows the south facing side (McKinley Ave visible in front of the building).

^Yep. North and South facades.

Also, that 'staggered windows' design or 'staggered facade' look is going up on buildings all across the world.

I guess it is an "era" thing.

At least it's not brutalism.

So it looks like BJC likely will take a hit as it didn't reach an agreement with Anthem, by far the area's largest insurer, on inclusion in the network for Anthem's health care exchange coverage. I imagine that will be worked out over time, but what we/BJC really need is for the state of Missourah to participate in the Medicaid expansion. Otherwise, the pain may be pretty severe both in human health outcomes and for BJC's well-being. I wouldn't doubt more lay-offs and fewer facilities investments would have to be considered if the situation persists.

Here is a bit more on the issue (It has since been confirmed that BJC was excluded by Anthem):

^ I believe that is the one still under construction. Pretty amazing activity all around the area.... a new crane just went up for the Shriner's on Monday and workers are busy on Cortex Commons and infrastructure.

Sometimes Clayco shuffles their website's links as they update their website. The renderings are back.

What I am happy about is the amount of glass being used on these new projects - McKinley, BJC Admin, St. Louis College of Pharmacy, Shriners. It's about time.

Brick is fine, but St. Louis needs a more "modern look" and glass tends to do the trick.

I hope the new BJC projects are modern and glass as well. The region needs more prominent all-glass structures.

And enough with the sandstone-colored facades with greenish windows buildings. More glass.

^Yep. With just a bit more ambition (and some big-name architects) , the whole hospital complex / Cortex area could grow to resemble the campus of MIT.

For those wanting to say a long goodbye, the old Jewish Hospital buildings, and a good part of what's directly adjacent to Children's Hospital, is very much under the wrecking ball. Demo is in full effect with a huge footprint.

Looks like foundation work is almost done with the McKinley Research building. They've had concrete forms up for some exterior walls for a week or two now. We should see it really take off here in the next month or two.

New renderings are out for BJC's Kingshighway expansion. They look good to me, even if it is more beige and blue/green glass:

^ this comment about metrolink stop from the article caught my eye:
Included in the project is a rebuilt Central West End MetroLink station at Euclid Avenue and addition of 2,400 parking spaces.

A Euclid station was so obvious in the first place that it hurts. So the new parking spaces will go over where the current station is today? I hope it has first floor retail. These surrounding blocks could easily explode with residential developments. Imagine living in what is pretty much St. Louis' greatest neighborhood AND having the busiest MetroLink station plus the streetcar right at your front door!

I'm not sure they plan to move the current station ... but the will definitely rebuild it. And I don't know the location of the new parking. There have been rumors of a large garage project to replace surface parking. That could be anywhere in the center's 25-block (or so) footprint, though.

NextStl updated their story will several additional day and night renderings.

also, the rendering looks good.

Hope the Metrolink station stays where it is. Putting it even further from th e bus transfer center would be extra annoying. It just needs a wider platform. How much trouble do you think it would be to add a straight shot under the buildings ped access to Forest Park? Basements in the way?

I suspect that would be pretty challenging. For now, pedestrians can access Kingshighway via Childrens Place. I'm not sure whether future development will add any new options.

Definitely glad to see that common sense *seems* to have prevailed and that the CWE station will stay in its current location. It wasn't that long ago that the SLDC floated the possibility of moving the station to Kingshighway which incidentally was like the 3rd time such a proposal had been made. I wrote about the history of the Central West End station on my blog a little over 2 years ago.

The hospital buildings look good. I especially like the cube for the Children's Hospital Building.

In terms of interesting hospital design, one of my favorite hospital buildings is the Northwestern Children's Hospital in Chicago:

IMHO the design is really boring. would have preferred something like this Cannon-designed hospital in BUFFALO of all places:
