The timing is quite interesting.urbanitas wrote: ↑Oct 02, 2020This apparent urgency to bring the 19xx Olive block down, and the stadium construction team schedule to take control and begin demo and excavation of the Anthem parking lot by the first week of November, is probably not a coincidence.
Yes folks, I spent part of my Saturday morning on this. My skills are not what they used to be. But setback and form don't really matter!

Honestly agree. Especially from an urbanist perspective, throwing gas stations on top of parking garages is kind of a best case scenario for a car centric metro. I'm in favor, let's do itdbInSouthCity wrote: ↑Oct 03, 2020I kinda like it....

^ and i feel like storing tons of liquid explosives on the roofs of these things is a great idea as well. built-in demolition for when they're replaced by mixed-use and skyscrapers. (i guess they could pump the gas a couple hundred feet up from the ground but they won't want to spend that much money.)

^ ha! yep, somebody's already looked into this.
^^^^^^Awesome, that's a 4 star QT right there!
If you ever decide to do a rendering of it on the 19xx Olive block, I really feel like there needs to be a safe and secure skywalk over Olive connecting the QuikTrip and SLMPD HQ...

PO's need their hot doggies too, I suppose. I should have made this a more balanced concept from a human rights perspective. Regrettable.
Is anything left? Did anyone get a pic of the last building coming down?
1900 was still there on Saturday. Looks like they still have some of the other buildings' carcasses to haul away first.quincunx wrote: ↑Oct 11, 2020Is anything left? Did anyone get a pic of the last building coming down?
If the Anthem parking had to be replaced immediately, why isn't 1900 Olive paved? They paved 1901 Pine immediately after demo.chriss752 wrote:

How about property valuation freezes for parcels converted to parking unless the conversion raises the value of the property?
BB 66 would vacate the bit of alley that was behind these buildings in order to consolidate the parcels.

Thoughts on writing our alders in opposition? Maybe we could say something like:
"I'd like to state my opposition to BB 66. The bill calls for the city to vacate an alley behind the 1900 block of Olive Blvd for the purpose of consolidating parcels to create a surface parking lot. Lots like this drive down property tax assessments leaving a greater and greater share of the tax burden on the rest of us. They encourage unproductive development that puts additional strain on public utilities without providing any commensurate benefit. Unless the property owners are inclined to pay a tax rate adjusted to reflect the actual costs of their structure, i. e. a rate comparable to the improved structures the lot is replacing, then this bill is likely to lead to years of depressed revenue for the city. We should not permit this kind of wholesale destruction to continue."
I'm open to suggestions. We can't let this continue. Not sure how much they read their beblasted e-mail, but they do like getting re-elected.

Isn’t this already closed to traffic bc it’s behind the SLMPD HQ?

^Different alley. We're talking about the stub south of Olive that was behind the buildings demolished for the parking lot. Between Olive, Pine, 19th, and 20th, unless I'm misreading something.
Should be this:

Should be this:

Would consolidating these parcels make it easier to redevelop? I assume this is so they can build their 'mixed use garage' (codex: chain bars in a TDD to subsidize the unnecessary and parking no one asked for).
Easier and necessary. I mean you have to have the whole block to build one big thing.
Wish we could make it easier to build the fine-grained development patterns instead of throwing them away like in this instance.

^Maybe there's no way around this, but I'm still peeved about the demos.

The alley is already paved over and part of the parking lot. It’s even fenced in
