Nadda. Lucas Lofts continues to host a flurry of activity (and now Bee Hat and Bankers are quite busy, as well) but the only change at the Days Inn is a few lights have been left on.
I just drove by and the only thing I noticed was the sign fronts have been taken out of the frame, there was a fence around the entire thing, the building is really ugly, there was a broken window on the 3rd floor, and that Lucas Lofts has a lot of garbage bin behind the building.
Also, workers were at the Bee Hat building working hard.

The St. Louis Business Journal has a small mention of the Days Inn Building in an article about the Merchandise Mart Apartments today.
At the same time... there was no mention of the Days Inn building in the <A HREF="http://www.urbanstl.com/viewtopic.php?t=1663">Beaumont Telephone Exchange</A> article, although Bill Bruce, owner of Bruce Development, was mentioned as being a co-developer of the <A HREF="http://www.urbanstl.com/viewtopic.php?t=628">Soulard Market Apartments</A> (aka Welsh Baby Carriage Factory), <A HREF="http://www.urbanstl.com/viewtopic.php?t=172">University Village Loft Apartments</A> (aka Warehouse of Fixtures), the redevelopment of 2222 Locust into apartments and the renovation of the former firehouse at 1122 Washington into into four loft apartments and retail (<A HREF="http://www.urbanstl.com/viewtopic.php?t=1403">Copia Urban Winery</A>).
The 96 loft apartments reported by the St. Louis Business Journal today is down from 126 apartments the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported on March 30, 2004. Hopefully the new numbers and the mention of the Days Inn means things are still in planning.
More apartment units are in development, including 96 loft apartments in the former Days Inn at 1133 Washington and 84 loft apartments in the Syndicate Trust building at 915 Olive.

The article in the St. Louis Business Journal was about the Merchandise Mart Apartments having refinanced the total debt remaining on the project and they touched a little on the downtown rental market, thus the mention of the 96 loft apartments proposed for the former Days Inn building.
Drove by this weekend and saw several dumpsters on the Days Inn grounds that were filled with stuff. Hopefully this means that work has begun on the inside.
They have a lot of workers tearing stuff out of the Days Inn building as we speak.

Nice! I can't wait until the day when they remove that ugly exterior cladding!
I guess they've officially announced the construction - this is from the Downtown Partnership:

Next door, construction on the Days Inn at Washington and Tucker will begin in January. The project will be called the Washington Avenue Apartments.
It would be nice if they would release a rendering or two. At least give us more info than the name and that they will be apartments.
If anybody needs a (slightly used) matress, they've got a huge pile of them in the courtyard area!

I was also told that they are putting some sort of all night diner in the Days Inn. I couldn't be more excited! They said it wouldn't be IHOP but I hope that they are wrong.

I think St. Louis has a little to much character to be limited to an IHOP on Washington. I'd love to see a classic city diner.

^Whoa Whoa Whoa let's not say things we can't take back! Ihop is the king of breakfast restaurants. They're untouchable.
While we are at it, there might as well be a Courtesy Diner down there too.

I vote for uncle bills. I think they put drugs in their pancakes, cause I'm addicted.

I think you might have meant MSG? Chinese food is loaded with it. I like Chinese food too, though.
Anyway, back on the subject. They are going to tear the horrible cladding off this building, right? Any hints on what it'll look like when done?
I will second the vote for a Courtsey Diner downtown. Coming from the land of diner's here in New Jersey, having one in downtown would be great. maybe a perkin's too.
This reminds me. Has anyone ever eaten at the diner like place out at the corner of Olive and 18th? Its in a small white building, which I think still has a sign saying something like "God Bless President Bush and the USA" on the outside. I have always ment to try it but never taken the time.

You'd take IHOP over, Uncle Bills, Courtesy Diner, South City Diner or any of the other places mentioned? I would take your own advice, and reconsider your choice of restaurants.
I have been trying to lay low lately, but cannot stay out of this one.
It is hard to get a better breakfast than IHOP, but that isn't what I have in mind for a 24 hour diner downtown. The national breakfast chains are busy in the morning and after the bars close. They are dead zones during lunch and evenings. We want something that is hopping 24 hours a day. Plus, it would be great to have something downtown that isn't already plentiful in the suburbs.
At any rate, this rumor is exciting, no matter what restaurant they open, even an IHOP. And even more important, getting this building fixed up and occupied. The pieces are coming together.

^You're right about that Expat. I love IHOP breakfast food so much, but I guess when you take into consideration midday traffic, it may be better to have a more traditional diner.
