Not really sensible with power generation and heat radiation requirements combined with limited transmission capability. Would probably be a better investment to build O'Neill Cylinders, tbh.

Post Dispatch is reporting a data center proposal is imminent for mark twain industrial park. The investment is expected to EXCEED the $3B Midtown Data Center and would be the first major data center in North St. Louis. It's going to be remarkable how much revenue for both City and SLPS is going to be made up of data center money by 2030.

https://www.stltoday.com/news/local/gov ... b1b28.html
That may be just in time for the city to consider a nascent proposal for the first major data center in north St. Louis.
Officials expect the project to locate in Alderwoman Pam Boyd's ward, which includes portions of the north riverfront and the Mark Twain/I-70 Industrial neighborhood.
And it is expected to be large — with investment exceeding that of the $3 billion development near the Midtown Armory.

Great news! That’s exactly where data centers in the region should be concentrated.

Also ICYMI:  "Today, the Board of Aldermen advanced some of the strongest data center regulations in the country. 🔒 In addition to maintaining the requirement that new data centers source 100% of their energy from renewables by their tenth year of operation, we also advanced legislation prohibiting them from receiving tax incentives. We will not be paying anyone to build here. After a year of hard work by elected officials and the Planning Commission, I'm proud that my colleagues were able to come together to find a path forward. Next: The legislation will be heard by the Planning Commission on September 9 before returning to the Board of Aldermen for final passage on September 11."

ok this is my last data center post of the evening... i'm not confident that the City will enforce the 10-year/100% renewable requirement in a way that actually compels the data centers to comply. that would require huge fines leading to shutdown if not satisfied, and given the City's track record on enforcement i don't see that happening.

Its not and it will eventually get rid of it.

So why even bother putting it in in the first place if it's unenforceable lip service?

It can't possibly help anyone win reelection.

Whats disturbing is how apparently none of you have any first hand experience with the actual detrimental affects of AI, yet youre here spreading your completely ignorant opinions, playing defense for billionaires who hate you and want you to die.

Whether you support data centers or not, it is quite disturbing how our enemies (Yes, the government of the PROC is not our friend) is constantly trying to influence our people & our policy to our detriment.

And any right-minded person is concerned about how AI will impact our lives (Both negative & positive), especially the job market of the future.

China is trying to create division, no different than when the USSR would push propaganda in the US about racism and race equality. The USSR didn't actually care about the morals behind the US' racism, all it cared about was the fact it was a point of division that could be used to weaken America's unity.

America's real enemy is its fascist government and the billionaire class that supports it. China dreams of doing the damage they have done. And they STRONGLY support the widespread proliferation of AI and data centers. China wouldn't have any leverage if America's capital class wasn't as purely evil and deprived as it is.

Seriously...the PPRC is the least of my worries. Scare-mongering about foreign adversaries or using them to discount criticism of Data Centers and AI is a scoundrel's move.

CBS Evening News broadcasted live from St. Louis last night 8/31/26

The entire news was from Union Station. They had a segment on Data Centers debate here as well.

Meanwhile Chinese polls show 80%+ approval.

Criminal, how poorly Silicon Valley rolled out AI. Altman and Dario should fire their PR people.

"AI is coming to take your jobs, give us money, it's the end of the world, give us money, money won't matter, give us money." 🤦‍♂️

yeah, this is just not a thing. based on the timing and sources, it's very obviously pro-data center propaganda. Americans have always organized against environmental threats: fracking, pipelines, strip mines, dumping, substations, etc. this is not some Chinese disinfo operation. data centers are just really obviously sh*tty for the environment and for urban areas—so much so that virtually every American realizes it.

The 'China disinformation' narrative has not yet been proven but is plausible. @urban_dilettante Agree there's been pro-data center propaganda on this as well, most notably that one outfit in Utah backed by Kevin O'Leary, the Canadian businessman who was on Shark Tank...

China, meanwhile, has great advantages on the US industry in that they have a much larger energy production pool to fuel data centers as well as far less restrictions on their construction. Their biggest issue has been, and remains, access to state of the art semiconductors like Nvidia's Vera Rubin or Advanced Micro Devices' MI300 series. Still, they're able to get Alibaba, Moonshot AI, and DeepSeek competitive with Anthropic and OpenAI and Alphabet without ready access to western GPUs or TPUs. China's also working fast to integrate AI into their economy, especially by marrying robotics and AI both at an early stage in the process and doing so with public retail. Very much, it's a fight over who can advance faster than the other, and the fight is for the rest of the global market. So far, the US has the better product lines, but China is more cost competitive. Truly fascinating times on an academic basis.

^ i would say that the bulk of the pro-data-center/"it's China" propaganda is coming from right-wing news media (Fox News, Newsmax, OANN) and the current regime because—like the kamikaze weirdo posthumanist tech-bro billionaires hellbent on forcing this stuff down our throats—they're one and the same monster. i mean, given the sheer flood of lies and propaganda that has come out of this administration already, i don't understand how anyone is like "welp, there might just be something to this China thing!" it's just more of the "COVID escaped from a Wuhan lab!" panic—there's no evidence for that either. *of course* China wants to beat the US; that's always been the case in everything! but the idea that they have magically, over the course of like a year, mounted a massive media disinformation campaign to turn like 90% of Americans against plopping massive noisy furnaces down in their neighborhoods to suck up local resources and raise their utility rates in order to provide AI slop that nobody asked for...  is just pretty absurd. it's more conspiracy theory madness.
