To be fair the delays are a big problem.  A way bigger problem than increasing speed will solve.  When you get stuck on the track for 4+ hours it kills the appetite to give it another go.

Personal experience and yes its dated.

Rode to Chicago, it was a hot day. So hot that due to safety concerns of track warpage the max speed was limited to 30 mph for at least half the trip.  added several extra hours.

Gave it another go years later.  Riding back got stuck behind a freight train whose crew had hit their hours limit.  It took 5+ hrs sitting still on the track to get a replacement crew there to swap with them.  With a kid this time so even more stressful and with supplies running low like formula and diapers.

These were legitimate delays for safety but they speak to the structural problems with the route.  The track upgrades may have largely fixed the heat problems (not sure) and if not it seemed like a pretty rare occurrence, but single tracking for significant distances is a problem.

Save people 15 minutes on the trip 10 times and then delay them 4 hrs once and tell me whether they will willingly travel by rail again.  I literally have only made the trip twice by rail and both times hit huge delays.  Maybe service is better now but I not personally ready to try it again without some assurance the trip will be roughly on time.

Stl PR - Amtrak’s trains between St. Louis and Chicago are moving faster

Specifically, Magliari said improved travel times between St. Louis to Alton and Joliet and Chicago can still be achieved.

Does St. Louis have any plans to modernize the Amtrak portion of the Civic Center?

I love its functionality, but it is a bit dated -- and, I must admit, I am a bit jealous seeing what looks like a really nice train station for Springfield.

You've arrived on time and non-aggrieved every time you've taken a flight?

Someone used to post on-time performance periodically in the railroad.net forum, but it seems no longer. Anyone know of somewhere else to get such info?

I haven't heard of any plans so I'd doubt it but it definitely could use an update. After a recent train trip it's weird to me in retrospect how much hoopla there was about the current Amtrak station when it opened. The station is certainly functional and the waiting area is fine but the only food/drink option being that crummy deli was a disappointment.

There needs to be an update.

St. Louis' Amtrak experience honestly feels very 1960s or 1970s to me, especially with the multi-color glass.

I've taken the 302 north to SPI several times the last few months and it did well, a bit early usually, once about 10 mins late.

My personal take is that guaranteed on-time is almost impossible with US railroads (without major investment)

I’ve been on three Amtrak trains that arrived 3+ hours behind schedule. It’s common. And the common denominator is a fatality. Two trains I was on killed a person on the tracks. Another was three hours late arriving because of a jumper in front of a freight train that closed everything in and out of Charlotte for most of day.

I understand (anecdotally) 3 hours is the average amount of time to assess, question, drug-test, clean up, replace crew, etc. before a train can be let go by law enforcement/EMS.

Unfortunately, pedestrian/car accidents happen all the time.

I’m curious if Brightline is seeing these kind of delays given all the accidents they have.

Like i said anecdotal but right now i am averaging roughly 3hrs late for every round trip.  If every flight was similar i would be looking for alternatives wherever possible.
Airlines were getting terrible press for simply overbooking and planes holding passengers on the tarmac for hours in a few anecdotal cases is a story on CNN the next day.  Trains don't get the press but i am certain on time performance for airlines is better than Amtrak.

I acknowledge i could have just been unlucky and I like the IDEA of passenger rail but the reality for me has been a pretty negative experience.

I guess you weren’t around for the Amshack days that characterized the STL inner city rail station experience from 1978 until this station opened in 2008…

I’ve always considered Gateway to be a perfectly functional station considering it’s sandwiched between a bunch of support posts for the interstate.  Yet they still managed to combine Amtrak, MetroLink & Bus, MCT, Greyhound, etc. into one convenient and easy to use station.

However, I’m sure the food options could be better…and I’ve heard complaints about the waiting room occasionally getting a little cramped.  There could be some room to maybe add an additional waiting area and a couple food spots under the highway to the west of the existing station building, those support posts would be an obstacle though.

I wouldn't argue against some new glazing either...though I'm not really bothered by the colored glass there today.

My issue isn’t the station, although it’s a bit dark and grungy. My issue is more the surrounding. The city needs to bully USPS out of their poorly maintained lot and get some type of private public partnership going.

Hell, I’d even support a parking garage for riders as a part of the development.

I'll admit that I did not board Amtrak in St. Louis or visit the Civic Center before 2019. I have no idea what the pre-2008 station looked like.

This was the station when Union Station closed down (literally a doublewide trailer lol):

Ok, yeah, that's a shack.

It kind of reminds me of the Amtrak station in Lawrence, Kansas, at least in terms of size and what you'd think it would be capable of.

Bit dramatic.  I said they need to address the delays to attract people and keep them.  Airplane plus mass transit is not the same as saying yay cars.

Personally i have on occasion advocated for moving the station to East St. Louis as part of a larger redevelopment effort.  Not a hugely popular opinion on this forum but whatevs.

If it was going to be located in the same place i would advocate for Elek Borreli's concept for a much improved station that includes metrolink buses etc.

Gateway station is already sort of a dump, moving it to East St. Louis will only make people less likely to board the train there.

A lot of time and money to save 30 minutes a trip. I was thinking it was going to be more time shaved off.

I think that money also went toward safety and reliability upgrades and new cars, so it's not just about the 30 minutes. But yeah I had initially hoped for a 4'30" trip time.

All the Lincoln Service are $25 STL-CHI, if you buy far enough ahead.
I see Texas Eagle for $31 on Aug 1.

It's insane that we spent $2B over 20 years and cant make a train go faster than 4 hours and 45 minutes to Chicago.
