The convention is town this week went on as planned and restaurants were packed at lunch, sometimes we think we’re the only ones with issues when this is a common American problem country wide.

The volleyball tournaments are coming back 2 more times in the next month. The MVC conference basketball tournament starts Thursday as planned.

I really do love your optimism, DB, but I'm afraid I'm losing the faith.

I am far more concerned about driving in downtown than homicides.

It is a national issue, but that doesn’t mean we can accept this or act like it can’t change here. There are plenty of cities in America and across the world that don’t have the staggering amount of crime and traffic deaths that we do.

A good start would be bringing in the Missouri national guard and having them patrol downtown.

So what are we going to do about making downtown a safer place to walk and drive?

Or about any of these other issues?

I'm a pretty staunch downtown guy. I love it. But the harsh reality is that downtown's already-blemished image has taken severe hits in the last ten days.

That would be a horrible idea, Why not have them patrol central west end? There was 29 crimes against a person in downtown in January and of those, 22 were no physical contact simple assault/intimidation, of the 7 others 2 were private residence rapes and 5 agg assault involving people who knew each other fighting. There was no random crime against a person

There was 12 car crashes that resulted in an injury, all 12 injured were the drivers of the vehicles involved. That’s down from 19 in January 2019 pre covid.

Narrative and emotional hyperbole aside, you have less chance of harm in downtown than driving to and work from west county on 64 to downtown and back

Greater STL Inc got $1.35m from Biden admin for a downtown security initiative, it’s rolling out as baseball starts

Crimes against a person in downtown 2021 vs 2022

Downtown;
2021: 547
2022: 478 (60% no physical contact simple assault/intimidation)
-13%

Will add downtown west and type to see if previous years pre 2020 can be formatted like new system but it’s much more complicated

I forgot about this. That's great. I hope we see some improvement with it.

A reminder: Just a few days ago, I predicted a huge rise for downtown St. Louis in the 2020s -- and I still think that way.

I know the suggestion has been made on here before, and I'm sure there are plenty of reasons as for why we may not want to do it, but why not consider more two-way streets in downtown St. Louis?

If we were to make two-way streets and then implement a ton of street calming, wouldn't that help? I feel like a lot of those one-ways get used as drag strips.

Same. Just this afternoon some guy pushing a stroller nearly got hit crossing Locust at 9th by a turning car. Both of those streets are one-ways with only one traffic lane. So they're about as calmed as they could be without completely closing them.

Every street is a danger.

But why pay attention to the biggest safety issues when we can overreact to a few well publicized events?

^reminds me of a “women shot dead at Washington and Broadway” story few years ago when everyone freaked out then later it was discovered that a women and her husband got into an argument and he shot her in their car.  Horrible situation but no impact on anyone’s safety and  hyperbole train left the station by then

Also I keep seeing the word “executed” as it relates to this last shooting as some dramatic effect phrase and I wonder what people think the other 200 homicides were…..they were all executions people

Yikes
On February 28, 2023, at approximately 5pm a confrontation between a motorist and two pedestrians occurred on Galleria Parkway under I 170. The motorist fired a single gunshot at the pedestrians, striking one pedestrian in the leg. It is unknown what the confrontation was about at this time. The suspect was taken into custody and the handgun was recovered. The victim was transported to a local hospital for serious but not life threatening injuries. We will update this post as more information becomes available.

Was the $15m for “Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) build” in BB120 the new dispatch center? Do we have any information on what that includes?

What happens if the state says no?

This money will sit until the city finds another source but the state won’t say no, budget is one place where Democrats have a say in Jeff City and one of the city state reps will get it through

Surprised no ones mentioned it here.  A homeless man shot and killed downtown in broad daylight the other day. The gunman stood behind the homeless man for a few minutes loading his gun, eventually aimed and fired killing the man execution style. All caught on video from about 15 feet away. The video has gone viral on all social medias. Extremely sad event and an absolutely terrible look for stl.

^its been talked about for 2 days in this thread, a mostly likely drug deal started the fight between the two at Shell, the shooter then shot him in the back and than after they made it across the street the video started
