Here are photos of the new Powell Hall sign. The photos were found on the symphony's blog.

I like it. However, I think Powell Hall needs to embark on an external powerwashing/sandblasting as well as replace the entrance canopy next.

I have been in theatres/halls like Radio City and Chicago Symphony Hall (Orchestra Hall) and while they are nice, to me, Powell Hall feels classier. While the new sign adds more vibrancy to a changing district, Powell Hall needs to be polished a little bit more to be the jewel that it is. Architecturally, Powell Hall is a beautiful building.

Hmm. I think Powell Hall's image needs a bit more polishing in the sensitivity department, to wit:

P-D, 8/24, italics added wrote:"Visibility from the south has always been a challenge," Schon said. "Many times, visitors have called us. They know where the Fox is, but they've driven right past Powell Hall. We're trying to make sure that never happens again."

Oooh, gee, we wouldn't want them to have to drive a block into scary North St. Louis and have to turn around.

More important, as the photos clearly show, that sign has two faces. Is the nice lady saying that no one ever came to Powell Hall from the north access?

Oh c'mon - I think that it's not news to say that most people access Powell Hall from the south. The point is that people shouldn't drive past it without knowing - no matter what direction they're heading.

well, I wouldn't want my grandparents driving around north of there, although personally I could spend hours on the northside.

I see the new sign everyday, and it's fantastic. There will be lots of gallery openings in Grand Center next Friday evening (Sep 7th), so that will be my first chance to see the sign all lit up at night.

Personally, I like the entrance canopy. It may be a bit dirty, but I like the design and scale of it. It's infinitely more dignified than the Fox's cheesy marquee.

Also, I noticed that they replaced acres of red carpet at Powell a couple of weeks ago.

That will be a welcome sight. Powell Hall is great, but IMO it's too big and doesn't have enough auxillary areas - if anyone's been to Music Hall is Cincinnati you'll know what I mean. And if you haven't seen pictures yet, I hope you never see what St. Louis had before Powell Hall!

I've seen a couple good drawing, but can't seem to find them right now. I believe the old Music Hall sat where the downtown public library is now.

Cincinnati didn't tear theirs down:

I was at Powell for the concerts this past weekend and the new red carpet looks very nice.

They currently have a small display set up in the ground floor lobby area to commemorate the SLSO's 40th anniversary at Powell, with photographs of the building when it was still a cinema and scenes during and after the subsequent remodeling. It also mentions the various architects, acoustic experts, etc., who were involved in the reconfiguration of the auditorium.

On the downside, with the closing of the last restaurant on the west side of Grand, the place seems even more isolated amid the urban decay than before.

Word is that a well-known St. Louis restaurateur is very close to taking over the first floor in the Humbolt Bldg. (SW corner of Grand and Washington).

$100 million sounds like a lot for that building.

Only demo besides the surface lot would be this building (I assume), definitely has seen better days though I kind of like the detailing on it (admittedly I kind of like the detailing on almost every old masonry house)

Man why does every development have to have a catch. I'm disappointed that they're going to tear down that beautiful house on Delmar and maybe stop using the grand old Grand entrance which this siteplan implies. There's so much surface parking they could've built on instead.

Remember a few years ago when they moved a few houses for the NGA?

Only one home was moved for the NGA, though the City offered to move several more, but yes…they should do that here:

It would be nice if they could move some square footage further south to avoid the house or if they're ambitious incorporate the building into the addition. Not saying I'd be in favor of cancelling the addition to save the house, but I would certainly be more excited about it if they could preserve the building somehow.
