I can’t believe people still shop for groceries in person and I’m not talking about just Covid. I’m talking about time. I value time more than anything and let’s just assign $50 per hour to that time (you can do whatever amount). If I drive to the store, shop, check out and drive home that’s about an hour to hour and a half. If I do that 52 times (once a week) 1.5x 52 = 78 hours x $50 = $3,900 a year and doesn’t include gas/car wear and tear. My instacart membership is $149 a year for free delivery.

^At $50 per hour of time capital, how much do you think you burn on message boards and social media? Probably a lot more than at the grocery store.

sure. or whatever other sensations and interactions a person might find enjoyable about it. markets have been social places for thousands of years. it's not some weird thing.

I can understand wanting to grocery shop sometimes, but also wanting that efficiency other times.
That's why I do a healthy mix of delivery orders, pick ups, but still do in-person shopping from time to time.
Unless you meal plan and have every single meal accounted for, or are okay with simple or repeated meals, I do think occasional in-person shopping is nice for browsing or trying new things - which is my primary reason for enjoying City Foundry's Fresh Thyme. That store easily does a better job of stocking local products than most other stores in the metro.
Sometimes, I also just want to go to places like Viviano's, Jay International Foods, etc.; places that don't have delivery services and that provide a (local) shopping experience that I enjoy.

Yes. I don't trust someone else to pick out "good" produce, just whatever is on top.
We all have our own vision of urbanity, but to me, walking to the grocery store is one of the biggest upsides of living in an urban area. Living within walking distance and not doing so regularly, I just can't fathom that.
Dropping into downtown Schnucks while I'm already passing by on foot is a 10-minute task, and I'm always already passing by on foot. I can see what's on sale and decide what to cook. I can buy the one thing I need to cook something to use up all my aging produce, etc. There's always one thing I need.
The grocery store is not really meant to be a once-a-week stocking up deal to me. I'll stock up on dry goods at warehouse and discount markets once a month or whatever. But for produce and daily foodstuffs, it's a multiple-times-a-week thing that takes 10 minutes each time.
Plus, yeah, you can't trust others to pick out produce.

I’m fully back to in-person. I like picking out my own fresh produce. Plus it’s one of those settings in the City where you come across a spectrum of humanity and that experience usually energizes me.urban_dilettante wrote: ↑Nov 29, 2021^ some of us enjoy going grocery shopping. i can't imagine worrying that much about maximizing the efficiency of every second of my life.
Exactly. I really don't mind shopping. Mainly because I want to pick out my own product and meat. There rest of the stuff doesn't matter as much but for those 2 things I want to do it myself. Also, it is quicker for me to just run into the store on the way home than wait on delivery. I usually shop for dinner that night 3 or 4 days a week. I am not a buy everything for the week one day a week type person.Bart Harley Jarvis wrote: ↑Nov 29, 2021Yes. I don't trust someone else to pick out "good" produce, just whatever is on top.
I also am too cheap to pay all the fees that come with delivery.

GoPuff delivers within 20-25 minutes. I use it probably 2-3 times a week for thingsjshank83 wrote: ↑Nov 30, 2021Exactly. I really don't mind shopping. I don't particularly like going grocery shopping, but like having my groceries delivered even less. People just have their preferences, also there's no way to use reusable bags for grocery delivery so maybe it's better fewer people do so.
At the moment these delivery services are being run as massive loss leaders with the intent of gaining market share, so the actual full price of having some college student drop off a bag of flaming hot cheetos at your house is being subsidized by Venture Capital and exploited labor.

Also, I've yet to see any delivery shoppers know where the hell anything is in the store, ever. They're usually store employees just standing in the middle of an aisle just staring.
We used Tower Grove Farmer's Market deliveries last year, and while great to support local purveyors, the cost was pretty high. But the offerings were great and they really did what they could to still drum up business for local biz and meet their market where they were. We also did numerous Instacarts, and yeah, I do not trust anyone picking out anything with a hard expiration date like produce or meat.
So yeah, I do see value in ensuring what I pick out is what I want. If I receive one more rotten onion, I'll lose it.

I enjoy my once-a-week grocery shopping. I find it to be a relaxing ritual.
I only go to the supermarket about once a month-ish. I absolutely hate it...but I'd rather do it myself.

same. i usually go late when it's empty and i find it to be pretty soothing. depends a lot on the quality of the store, though.framer wrote: ↑Nov 30, 2021I enjoy my once-a-week grocery shopping. I find it to be a relaxing ritual.
City Foundry today is packed! Christmas market and food hall are at capacity!! Only 6 spaces left and if they get filled I have no idea where they’re going to seat! They might need to expand seating to where the Christmas Market is at right now. This is awesome for the city no lie!
Took the metrolink to Cortex, went to Ikea and crossed the street to The Foundry.

Great to hear! What is the vibe of the Christmas market (as in what kind of vendors does it have)?
City Foundry Phase II starts in January according to STLBJ - Behind pay wall - I am kinda amazed because this is St. Louis and Phase II's usually come years after Phase I... or not at all

So exciting. Can't wait to see this project rise. I think it's going to be so impactful.
I want to see it from the highway, from Vandeventer, from Forest Park Ave, from Sarah across the expanse of the IKEA parking lot.
It'd be fantastic if we get a Phase III on the parking lot just south, too.
I know it's likely a resounding no, and I think I've asked this question on the forum before, but is there any way that IKEA would ever sell a portion of their parking lot? What about the "New Square" parking lot between Sarah and Duncan on Forest Park Ave?

BTW, Steve Smith gave us a behind-the-scenes tour of the City Foundry—basement gallery, the Speakeasy, second and third floor, outdoor patio, the office space, the future e-gaming space, the mini-golf space. It's very impressive. And he said construction on Phase II is soon, didn't realize it was that soon.
It's going to be impressive.

Did they change the colors? I feel like I remember old renderings being very red. In any case, I like this better.
