Casa Loma is about to have their first event this weekend since the plague struck: Annie and the Fur Trappers are playing there Friday after a short swing dance class. I've been meaning to check that place out, but I only really realized what it was during the dark times last summer. I'm halfway tempted to stop by after my own Friday gig if I'm not completely dead on my feet from trying to remember how to play after a year and a half. Sounds like a good show. (And holy crap, but you can't knock the history of that venue.)
Casa Loma is a pretty cool place, very old school vibe still in tact, a lot of history in that building. Had a group of friends that used to like to get dressed up and go swing dancing on Friday nights, fun times!
Also, speaking of history, my Grandparents met at Casa Loma, so I've always felt a personal connection to the place.

The median income level of people living off Cherokee is going to do nothing but go up in the coming years. While this will bode well for the general vibrancy of the retail strip, it will certainly lose some of its current charm. I hope the Mexican element can continue to thrive here, but we have already seen some businesses migrate to Bevo and deep South Grand.
Fortunately there are just soooo many retail spaces on Cherokee that I don't see rents becoming too unaffordable anytime soon. It would be nice however to start getting some retail momentum into the corner stores on Utah and Potomac.

Also if I had a pile of money to burn to would definitely open a speakeasy type bar below to the Casa Loma. Jackson Hewitt and used appliances seem like an odd fit below such an iconic space.

That's a heck of a neat looking space. I wish Well Made Workshop well. They seem to have an interesting business. I hope something more public facing moves in to make use of the character of that space.

The iconic Cherokee statue has been removed from the corner of Jefferson and Cherokee after a community vote. A bit disappointing but I understand considering the statue was probably quite racist.
Perhaps it can one day be replaced by a more respectful and historically correct Cherokee warrior statue

And for that matter, any street or place name honoring a people who participated in genocide and systematic slavery, oppression of minorities, sexual abuse of minors, and forced marriage is "deeply troubling".

There is nothing wrong with naming a street after the Cherokee but it is not exactly like they have any ties whatsoever to the St. Louis area. By the time of European settlement in upper Louisiana it was mostly Osage this side of the Mississippi. In fact, conducting the fur trade with the Osage were the whole reason for the founding St. Louis and made up basically the entire economy during the periods of French and Spanish administration.

What if the statue of Italian immigrants on The Hill had them clad in lederhosen? Would we bemoan that being taken down too?
This doesn't have anything to do with renaming the street (which I don't see happening). Not everything is a slippery slope and historical correctness shouldn't be mistaken for political correctness by those who are too lazy to learn the difference.

Yeah I don't get the hate for removing what feels like the equivalent to a cigar store indian statue from the corner. It was only put there for shoppers not all that long ago.
I just hope they replace it with something else interesting and prominent. It doesn't even have to be a person. Maybe they can get the Voltron statue out of storage? Would look pretty awesome in front of the new Apotheosis.

As long as we're renaming streets, I've always liked the way parts of Denver have street names in alphabetic order. For example, you may pass in order the streets Leyden, Locust, Monaco, Magnolia, Niagara, Newport, Oneida, Olive, etc. It makes giving directions (for people who don't just use their phones) easy. Monaco is a major street so Newport can be referred to as the "2nd N past Monaco" and people pretty much know what you mean.
