I can't believe some of you are actually in favor of closing streets to auto traffic. Once again, this can work in densely populated areas, or European cities that are packed full of free-spending tourists, but St. Louis simply doesn't have the numbers to make it work.

Free the Grid!
well, cars + 70 years of car-focused development patters are a big reason that STL streets aren't packed full of free-spending tourists or residents. cars need to be put in their f*cking place.
True but then you're referring our enthusiastic embrace of highways slashing through city centers and the culture of high speed sprawl draining the vitality of downtown. That is quite a different issue than the traditional street grid of neighborhoods that caters to local traffic and connectivity and that existed long before the violence of the internal combustion engine came along.

Just like we shouldn't have gone overboard to sell our souls to the automobile, I feel we do not need to go overboard in the other direction either.
A balanced approach is what will stand the test of time.  Calm traffic to your heart's delight without sacrificing access.

^ I'm talking bout greatly reducing the amount of space given over to autos, not pedestrians and cyclists.

I'm all about greatly reducing. Just not elimination. Have we beaten this to death yet.....

Sadly, the Toynbee tile at 8th and Market has been paved over. According to this article it was the last one remaining.

Schnucks is wrapping up renovations at its downtown store.  Will now be called Schnucks Downtown.
https://www.bizjournals.com/stlouis/new ... 2#cxrecs_s
Beyond the new name and signage, the company expanded Schnucks Downtown’s meat and seafood cases, added grocery items, expanded produce cases, added self check-out kiosks and a self-service Kaldi’s Coffee bar.
The CWE store is also getting some improvements:
Another city store, at 4171 Lindell Blvd. in the Central West End, is undergoing renovations. Schnucks said the store received decor upgrades, an expanded hot foods section in the deli, added a grab-and-go section and a new cheese island. The store also added a service counter to its meat department and sushi to its seafood department. Officials said the CWE store is getting more self-service checkouts as well.

^ interesting. so they've abandoned the Culinaria brand? fine with me—always thought it sounded pretentious.

I think there's still a Toynbee tile on Tucker, I think. I want to say it's near the median at Locust.

^I was a bit surprised they're not branding their second Columbia location, the one in the old Osco Drug/Lucky's Market, Culinaria. Oddly, they're also not branding it Schnucks. Instead they're calling it "EatWell by Schnucks." I don't get it. Weirdness abounds.

I thought I saw not long ago that they were opening their EatWell brand somewhere in St. Louis.

As the Crazy Bowls and Wraps closes downtown at MX, I am hearing the facility will be joined with the empty Taze' and together will now by smaller Dollar General?  DGE or Dollar General Express.

That would be a welcome addition down there. The Clayton DGX store is quite nice, so I’d like to see it replicated downtown.

I have to admit my first thought wasn't the most positive, but today I found myself by the Clayton DGX, and agree it was better than I had imagined.

The 7th Street pedestrian improvements are advancing. HOK is doing design work. First presentation was held on November 12th. Plans call for a cycle track, more of those "Light my STL" street lights, some more landscaping, and better sidewalks. If all goes well, work could start next winter.

That’s too common sense of an idea. Too obvious.

I think just about every street in Downtown St. Louis needs streetscape improvements so those look pretty good.  Understanding that it's too late to change it now...I wonder if it would have made more sense to move the cycle-track over to 8th or Broadway.  That would allow for its continuation and eventual connection to the 7th Blvd bike lanes in Soulard and beyond.

Seems they're stopping these improvements at Washington, would be nice if they continued to the roundabout at Convention Plaza.  The Macy's garage is closed right?  Would also be nice if they could just remove that unsightly ramp.

Why do these plans have to go under "MoDOT Review" and "MSD Review" for 6 months? If I took several months to even think about getting a project done at work, I'd lose my job.

I agree.  Like, why does everything public facing take at least two years to get done in this city?  We're talking about streetscape changes..

Some background- while MoDOT has no involvement in the project and it isn’t a MoDOT road, MoDOT is the official federal gov administrator of federal transportation dollars so it has a team of 5 people in the STL district that admins federal money that east west gateway awards to locals. When I was at MoDOT I had all the GRG projects with federal $. Now why 6months? That’s just fluff, it never took more than 2-3 weeks for me to turn out plans

Is there a reason that the bike lane is on the left-hand side of traffic, rather than the right? It just looks odd to me.

Could be other reasons, but northbound traffic parks on right (east), 4 driveways on the east side none on the left, and Kiener block was just completed with bump outs that I’m sure they didn’t want to remove.

This is great news. If Walgreens or CVS aren't going to step up, this is the next best thing for DT.
