I think pretty bollards would suffice, lol.
If anything, this should be a red flag (should have already been obvious.. obviously..) to city planners that the streets were too wide to begin with. Instead of the barrier bandaids, actually follow up on all of the community input and the traffic studies. Or are those going to sit around for another year?symphonicpoet wrote: ↑Aug 21, 2020They've dropped chicanes on 4th as well. Was driving through to take my grandmother on an outing. 4th is closed down to a single lane at Market, maybe Olive, and Washington or so. And you have to weave lanes. It's never the same lane open twice. Personally, I think make the thing bidirectional with one lane each way and a center left turn lane that's interrupted with lots of islands and textured pavers and so forth. And sure, make people weave around some. And can someone please plant a bunch of trees down the middle of some of these streets? Big ones. Just narrow 'em all down. None of it is any more than local traffic anymore anyway.
The barriers are great in function, but I'm not sure leaders have learned anything or have any long-term plans. Seems like they just want to remove them and go back to normal in the future.
Yesterday afternoon I was able to calmly walk across Fourth Street against the light (and without waiting for a minutes-long stoplight) for maybe the first time ever. It was magnificent and these streets should've been narrowed years or even decades ago. We should've had a better river bridge for bikes/peds, and now we do thanks to the Eads' closure.
So when I'm walking around, I'm torn. It's great to see pedestrians (and cyclists) being considered. But it kind of feels like a temporary, accidental improvement that we'll probably soon lose because those wide streets are needed 30 minutes a day in normal times.

The businesses hate it and won’t survive. STL doesn’t have the population to start making pedestrian only streets.framer wrote:But . . . how do the businesses feel about it?

^ that makes zero sense. There are plenty of other reasonable explanations like that we are a car centric city and society (with work and options that behavior can change) but population makes zero sense what so ever.

Retractable street bollards would be fantastic. That way streets could be made accessible quickly in emergencies as well as during off peak hours of the day for deliveries and whatnot.urban_dilettante wrote: ↑Aug 21, 2020any type of gate installed would be destroyed in no time, so probably not a great idea to install expensive decorative gates. i think some decent-looking retractable or removable bollards would be fine. they should be installed all over the place, actually.
this perpetually recurring garbage is yet more justification for aerial surveillance, as well. but wouldn't want to hypothetically intrude on anyone's privacy since people are just getting killed and stuff.

^ That's a great idea. St. Louis City can't even get traffic light sensors installed, though.
Why are we so far behind?

Because we spread out to much, and there's too much to take care of.

Shocking
After that, he ended up in Florida where, at the age of 21, Kinworthy was charged with attempted murder after police say he shot and disfigured a man in a road-rage incident in Cocoa, Florida. The victim lost three fingers in the shooting. The victim told police that Kinworthy and others made fun of his Ford Mustang. Kinworthy fired a shot and the victim rammed the car Kinworthy was in.
