Hopefully it does well. There are a lot of downtown Macy's locations that are closed or will soon be closed. City Target is a perfect fit for these spots.

Would also love to see a Trader Joe's or Aldi in the space, along with a CVS/Walgreens.

Has anyone heard from Hudson? When I look them, up their office looks shut down, and their phone number doesn’t even work...

^ Haven’t heard anything specifically, but it looks like they just exited the Cleveland market and were just named in a lawsuit there too.  So, I’d say it’s not looking good either way.

Hudson was a mess from day one. I tried to go to their website back in 2016 and it wanted me to download a font file that my computer detected as malware. Yes, I know innocent things get flagged as malware all the time, but not a good look regardless. Plus, ya know, they were hq'd in Florida.

Man, a Downtown Target would be killer here.  I think a CVS/Walgreens could work in a million other spots, but the footprint of this is perfect for Target.

Why not both?  🙂

The ground floor is over 60,000 SF.  CVS owns Target's pharmacy operations, but I have never noticed if there are any CityTarget or TargetExpress stores that share a building with a full CVS. There would probably be too much product overlap, especially for a selection "targeted" to an urban demographic. Still, as long as we are dreaming...

I guess that was my only thought.  Seems a bit redundant.

Well, their current urban concepts would be.

But since CVS acquired Target's pharmacy and prescription delivery operations, there has been some speculation and discussion of more consolidation. Rather than a merger or CVS acquiring Target outright, a joint venture might make sense.

Target wants to move into urban areas with smaller concept stores complete with CVS pharmacies, yet CVS is already in many of those markets with pharmacy / c-stores. So, as things are, CVS would be competing with itself, unless, they create a new joint venture urban concept...something for which the Railway Exchange space seems perfectly suited.

I could see CVS supplying the health, beauty, and OTC medical products along with the pharmacy. And the Target side would supply the groceries, kitchen stuff, small appliances, electronics, home office supplies, unassembled furniture, etc. All targeted to the urban dweller or visitor of course. Then CVS can phase out some of their suburban-style urban c-stores, and share the increased cost of retail space in the denser, more pedestrian-oriented locations...

The Railway Exchange aka "the Famous Barr building", garnered a mention in this article about Target's new location in the former Kaufmann's department store in downtown Pittsburgh:

Forbes: Target Plans To Bring Some New Life To A Downtown Pittsburgh Landmark

"One former department store, located in downtown St. Louis, would make an ideal candidate for an inner-city Target. Since 2013, the massive Famous Barr flagship store, which formerly served as the corporate office of the mighty May Department Stores Company, sits vacant. Equivalent in size to the Pittsburgh Kaufmann’s, the Famous Barr building has experienced its share of failed redevelopment plans.

Over the past several years, St. Louis has enjoyed a continually expanding downtown residential base. A Target store, located within the shuttered Famous Barr, specifically tailored for downtown residents and workers could generate strong traffic sales and encourage other retailers to invest in the city’s downtown. Target could never possibly fill the space vacated by Famous Barr but a temporary store could serve as a commercial resource until the landmark building receives an adequately funded and realistic future plan.

I’ve been cited in media publications as a department store “historian,” “lecturer,” “expert,” “guru,” “aficionado,” “junkie,” and “maven.” I am an oboist with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra but I have this second life. I have authored several department store history books, from Wanamaker's to Gimbels, and lectured at locations such as the New York Public Library, Boston Public Library, New York Fashion Week, the Wanamaker centennial celebration, and the Historical Society of Washington DC. I have contributed to the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Fortune, Washington Post, NPR, BBC World News, and Southern Living. You may have even seen me on CBS Sunday Morning. I love telling stories and I stand by my research. I’m also at http://www.departmentstorehistory.net/"

I have enormous respect for oboists. They're such lovely instruments . . . and so blasted hard to play. Someone managing to not only play the oboe well but still have enough free time to write about architecture at such a level . . . Well done!

Thanks! I appreciate that someone in another city gave a shout out to the Railway Exchange, but was hoping this was coming from some developer or broker who has influence.

That sucks man! That’s a nice building!! I’m also curious if the Hotel Saint Louis expansion to the chemical building still happening or if that’s also dead.

Jefferson Arm's developer is having a very difficult time obtaining financing.

Hotel Saint Louis will not be expanding into the Chemical Building.  CBRE has the Chemical Building listed.  Lots of interest.  Chemical Building will get done.

Yeah the Chemical seems like a good bet to get there sooner than later.  It is too bad the Gills weren't able to close on that financing.  Would have been cool if it ended up as an extension to Hotel St. Louis.  I believe that was a pandemic casualty.
