117 to date.

last years total 204. If people play nice we will be lower and possibly much lower.

Sadly, out of the 117 all have been black except 7 (white/other).

YTD:
2017 => 138
2018 => 117

That's about 15% lower, looks good especially as temperatures are about to drop.

It would be very nice to not have to see a million "St. Louis is the murder capital of America" headlines this year.

KSDK - Man arrested after video shows car speeding through yard and ignoring school bus stop arm
According to police, McCloskey admitted to driving the car and he said a mechanical failure caused the accident. He was released from custody on traffics summonses and the case is being forwarded to the Ballwin Municipal Prosecutor;s Office.

McCloskey told 5 On Your Side reporter Jacob Long that his brakes went out and he was trying to avoid a bad crash and he said it's amazing he didn't hurt anyone. He said he tried to return to the bus after the car stopped, but it was gone. He didn't want to go to police because he was driving on a suspended license and does not dispute charges against him.

^ See, if I had my way (as in: if I ran my own country), everyone would have their fingerprints and DNA added to a national registry at birth or upon applying for permanent residency and/or citizenship. Call it as dystopian as you will.

In any case, it's good to see technology and science being used like that to help solve old and new cases.

Good luck getting the state of Missouri to do this while they can't even get it together to comply the Real ID Act :lol:

I'd rather law enforcement not have a database of samples of every person's DNA. The opportunities for routine abuse and planting of evidence would certainly abound, and I have little reason to trust juries to protect innocent people when most seem utterly convinced by often faulty or inconclusive forensics.

Very sad to hear that it was a particularly violent weekend. Possibly it was from everyone going out after being stuck inside for a week due to the heat?

September was fairly wretched for homicides, up by near half from a year before. The City is still down for the year, and hopefully September proved an aberration.

What if St Louis City remained a County, but divided itself into, say, 6 cities of 50k each to better mirror St Louis County. Would that help facilitate a 10 year plan to assign a new designation to all the towns in both counties as, say, villages or boroughs from the legislature, and the two counties as a single “City of St Louis”? Boroughs could keep same services they provide now, and “City of St Louis” would provide all the services currently provided by St Louis County.

So we end up with a City split between 3 extremely poor, mostly black boroughs, and 3 middle income, mostly white boroughs. What does that solve exactly?

Really hoping September was an aberration. It would be a huge W for the city to have the murder rate be down like 15%-20% this year. Need to string a couple down years in a row to start eroding that narrative.

In some good news, homicides are down so far in November -- there have been 2 weekends and a full 7 day period without any. From the count in the P-D article, homicides are down 19 compared to the same date last year.
