I suspect it won't be too much longer before Oakland Av. starts to see some tear-downs for mid-rise residential.

Also, the small parking lots immediately north and south of the Montclair on the Park could accommodate a couple of sliver buildings.

I've lived in a high rise next to an interstate. Never again. Although I think window design has gotten a little more soundproof since the '60s.

^Also, there's that buffer strip of grass and trees (technically part of FP, I think) between Oakland and the highway.

And the interstate's in a ditch there, which should help some.

Market and Land Use Report for Forest Park
http://www.ewgateway.org/wp-content/upl ... Report.pdf

Existing Conditions Report
http://www.ewgateway.org/wp-content/upl ... Report.pdf

this was done as part of the Great Streets Study in the park
as i mentioned in another thread one of the recommendations from the study was a bus system in the park that also went down Forest Park Ave to Taylor (with its own bus lane and signal priority) and stopped at the metro garage, so that people taking metrolink can have a "last mile" connections to the park. The WUSM transportation people/their consultant will kill this idea, they dont want any other traffic on taylor because their plan for taylor is for it to be a ped street even tho it currently have 800 bus/shuttle movements daily.

Per the RFT, more options for fun coming to Forest Park this time at the Boathouse via Big Muddy Adventures:
...paddleboats, canoes and XL paddleboards will rent for $20 for the first hour, while kayaks and regular paddleboards will be $15 an hour, the company says. Additional hours for all boats will be $15.

The four options will be available daily from 11 a.m. to sunset. Group reservations will be accepted for ten or more boats; all other rentals are first-come, first-served.

I walk my dog around Jefferson Lake fairly often; it's one of the most photogenic areas in the whole park (and just wait until One Hundred is finished). So I'm really looking forward to the upcoming renovation of the south end, when this:

is turned into this:

^I would like to see the next round of "larger" investments in FP to be centered around creating a walkable and inviting entrance throughout the section fronting Kingshighway. With the additions to the CWE especially One Hundred I would like to see some activities added and enhanced on this end of the park.

According to this map, it looks like several upcoming projects (marked in purple) are due for the eastern portion. You're right; some kind of enhanced entrance experience would certainly be welcome.

And this image shows how they plan to connect and improve the river and lake systems in the eastern portion. I frequent the round lake in the lower left of this image (with the fountain), and they have already added several benches, and a bunch of marker flags seem to indicate more work to come. It looks like they'll be adding a couple of pavilions, as well as some more extensive landscaping around the lake.

The lake rendering is the thing that has me really excited. I love STL but I dont find it easy to get a quick kayak or SUP or run around a river in. having alot more water in Forest Park (and hopefully Chouteau Greenway) would help alot IMO in terms of recreation available.

When I was in Cincinnati I caught myself thinking for a bit how great it would be if we had a fancy riverfront park like their's. But then I remembered how many more people you can see in Forest Park at any given moment much less a Saturday afternoon. Not to mention the fact that we already have a pretty amazing riverfront park. So yes, as for whats healthier for the city, I'd take Forest Park over a riverfront park any day.

Looking at the map, I can't help wondering if there's too much land devoted to golf. Don't get me wrong, I think it's great, and perhaps unique, having golf available in the central city, but could it perhaps be cut back a bit?

1) Reallllyyy though
2) I've heard they actually generate a lot of funds for the park.
3) Most people are not experiencing Forest Park from 30,000 feet. Walking around the park, are you actually thinking "we need more land for ______" Because I do not. I personally don't think we have a better use for that space right now. Should our urban core population increase rapidly and we need more soccer, baseball, rugby, frisbee, and cricket fields, then lucky us, we have a bunch of acreage ready to repurpose.

I did see a suggestion once that we daylight the River Des Peres along Lindell west of the History Museum and turn it into wetlands. But I'd rather they focus their efforts on the wetlands we already have on the eastern end of the park. Plus, while we definitely do need to daylight River Des Peres in the future, the threat of floods hasn't gone away. It will be a massive engineering project, as it always has been.

Always thought one of the best/biggest investment Saint Louis could do would be to renovate River Des Peres as an actual, useable canal with water taxis. Daylight RDP all the way to Forest Park and you have a natural extension of the Cross County Line that provides a more or less full loop of South City/South Mid County.

On Friday, April 27 the Great Streets proposal will be posted online. Tonight was the public meeting.

Agreed - I know the engineering would be almost insane, but I think it would be a modern wonder to see that river resurrected. Always good to bring this article up when I get too excited about it... :P

Holy cannoli! Any idea when this might begin? Also this Great Streets things sounds interesting.... looking forward to hearing more about that. Anyway, what a treasure the park is; it's so magnificent it's almost as nice as Tower Grove Park!

The FPF website says no, but I've seen several people that seem to have their own on the water.
