When I was in Cincinnati I caught myself thinking for a bit how great it would be if we had a fancy riverfront park like their's. But then I remembered how many more people you can see in Forest Park at any given moment much less a Saturday afternoon. Not to mention the fact that we already have a pretty amazing riverfront park. Always thought one of the best/biggest investment Saint Louis could do would be to renovate River Des Peres as an actual, useable canal with water taxis. 3) Most people are not experiencing Forest Park from 30,000 feet. Walking around the park, are you actually thinking "we need more land for ______" Because I do not. I personally don't think we have a better use for that space right now. Should our urban core population increase rapidly and we need more soccer, baseball, rugby, frisbee, and cricket fields, then lucky us, we have a bunch of acreage ready to repurpose.
I did see a suggestion once that we daylight the River Des Peres along Lindell west of the History Museum and turn it into wetlands. But I'd rather they focus their efforts on the wetlands we already have on the eastern end of the park. Plus, while we definitely do need to daylight River Des Peres in the future, the threat of floods hasn't gone away. It will be a massive engineering project, as it always has been.
Agreed - I know the engineering would be almost insane, but I think it would be a modern wonder to see that river resurrected. Holy cannoli! Any idea when this might begin? Also this Great Streets things sounds interesting.... looking forward to hearing more about that. And this image shows how they plan to connect and improve the river and lake systems in the eastern portion. I frequent the round lake in the lower left of this image (with the fountain), and they have already added several benches, and a bunch of marker flags seem to indicate more work to come. It looks like they'll be adding a couple of pavilions, as well as some more extensive landscaping around the lake.
