I don't suppose anyone has had a chance to see if there is anything interesting in the competition manual? (I note that you need to register your design team in order to get a copy).

Maplewood greenway being proposed:

The council also discussed a potential greenway biking/walking route through Maplewood that would connect the now under construction Great Rivers Greenway near Francis Slay Park on McCausland Avenue with Deer Creek Park.

Routes being considered are along Greenwood Boulevard; or a south route, along Deer Creek. Mayor Barry Greenberg said previously there was a deadline of October 24 for the city to tell Great Rivers its preference, but that’s been extended.

He said the council has questions to be answered by Great Rivers before they make their decision. Also, there will be another public hearing. One question is how the trail will cross Big Bend Boulevard: the bridges at Marshall Avenue and at the end of Greenwood Boulevard are possibilities. They also considered going under Big Bend.

Understand it would be costly & required gov't funding but always thought if Maplewood could relocate some of the light industrial/commercial properties that are near Big Bend & on top of/next to Deer creek behind the small strip center. Relocate them to Sunnen Business park keeps the businesses within Maplewood and would be a win win all around. It would allow for extending the current deer creek trail under Big Bend in order to keep the trail on the residential side of Deer Creek as well as giving that same residential neighborhood good direct trail access to Shrewsbury metrolink station/River Des Peres Greenway in one direction and the Deer Creek Park/commercial/stores/ in the other direction without having to cross Big Bend and or Hanley/Lacledes Station Road

Maybe argue that you would be spending funds on an urban flash flood mitigation project for city of Brentwood & Maplewood overall (another place to take on water that gets backed up further up the creek & floods Manchester road during heavy rain events) or added/retention areas/wider floodable greenway as part the bigger MSD project to reduce storm water overflow. Tough and expensive to redo past development patterns but St Louis region's quality life is really about embracing the creeks, rivers, and waterways to the fullest IMO.

Are they looking at a Olive street route or following the railyards? I would really like to see some beautification along the rail lines, I think that would be a plus.

There is really no final route yet. They’ll let the design teams pretty far off the leash based on CAG and TAG input on opportunities, threats, ect

Anyone know if there is anything that is planned to start work next year? I know a number of projects now won't be ready until next spring that are under construction now.

Good to see in yesterday's South County Times that Kirkwood, Sunset Hills, and Fenton are all really trying to work with GRG and MODOT to get the pedestrian/greenway aspect of the new I-44 bridge built.

Although it's not officially open, I'm impressed with the work they have done in Cliff Cave park. Great Rivers does quality job.

Just looked it up on Google Earth. You can see preliminary work in the Google Earth Imagery.
I've never heard of this park before but it looks really cool simply from the switchbacks the path does to go up and down those hills. Excited to see it some day.

This is in terms of a trail network an important link due to existing trails exist at or near this location on both sides of the river and the ability to improve a pedestrian and cycling network in this area since there is limited connectivity on either side of the Meremec.

Hopefully there is connected improvments to trails both on and off-road from this in the area say connect towards Powder Valley and into Sunset Hills, up Marshall Road towards Kirkwood, and going upstream from Unger Park to Buder Park

^^ I definitely recommend a visit to Cliff Cave Park.... haven't been there in a few years so I look forward to seeing what's gone with these improvements. County really does have some cool but kinda below-the-radar parks; Sioux Passage in NoCo is another neat river-adjacent one, though I'm not sure if it's connected to the GRG trail network.

Definitely check out Sioux Passage Park! Especially the boat ramp section along the river. One of our favorite “hidden” spots in STL.

Cliff Cave Park has a cave that you can go all the way through and come out somewhere up on a hillside. It starts off with an easy walk, but the latter half of it requires wading through water and some fairly tight squeezes. At the end, you have to climb up a small waterfall and then crawl up out of a hole to reach the surface.

DO NOT go after heavy rain. In 1993, six people were trapped and drowned inside the cave. Actually, it's been quite a while since I've been through it; not sure if it's still open to the public or not.

According to Wiki (and the official park website), Cliff Cave has been gated-off since 2009 to protect any archaeological artifacts within the cave as well as to preserve the wildlife living inside of it (though the potential danger of the caves probably didn't help either).

MoDOT partners with Great Rivers Greenway, municipalities for I-44 shared use path over Meramec

ST. LOUIS – People who use the Meramec Greenway (the shared use path for walking, running or biking) in Fenton and Sunset Hills will be able to cross the Meramec River into Kirkwood when a new shared use path over the river opens in 2022.

The Missouri Department of Transportation and Great Rivers Greenway today came to an initial funding agreement for a shared use path across the Meramec, next to the new I-44 Meramec River bridges. Construction on that project will start this fall, with the construction on the shared use path across the river expected to be complete late in the project.

MoDOT is funding the foundation for the bridge for the shared use path, while Great Rivers Greenway is funding the 12-foot-wide bridge structure across the river. Fenton, Kirkwood and Sunset Hills have tentatively agreed to seek funding for the work to connect the shared use path to the existing Meramec Greenway system on the west side of the Meramec. This connection will also link to Emmeneger Park, Powder Valley Nature Center and Conservation Area, Possum Woods Conservation Area and nearby Laumeier Sculpture Park.

“Over the years, there has been a great deal of interest from the cycling community for a bridge that crosses the Meramec River. We are ecstatic that we are able to partner with Great Rivers Greenway, and the municipalities on both sides of the Meramec River to make this a reality,” said Tom Blair, MoDOT District Engineer for the St. Louis region.

“Bridging over a river is a rare opportunity in any region; creating access that connects communities changes how people get around the region,” said Susan Trautman, CEO of Great Rivers Greenway. “This collaboration of partners demonstrates what can be done when people work together to improve our quality of life – greenways create connections for people to get where they need to go, explore their communities and enjoy some fresh air.”
