^ I meant the appeal of the shark bridge specifically, not the aquarium in general. those 2 million people aren't coming just for the shark bridge. also not saying a shark bridge is a bad idea, just that there must be a better way to design it so that there isn't 4 miles of rope obstructing the view into the tank.
I don't get the shark bridge thing either but maybe kids really like it. If they do then you might as well have it. I would rather just have a glasslike see thru floor you walk on over it. Hopefully we can start activating the western half of gateway mall, as detailed in the Gateway Mall Master Plan. Would be a great avenue for visitors!

The Downtown Neighborhood Association has wrapped up a public engagement effort to ask what active uses the Downtown community wishes to see in the Gateway Mall west of Tucker. The Gateway Mall Master Plan allows for active uses, but no one was working towards implementing them.
We are currently arranging a meeting with the 2 aldermen whose wards overlap with that portion along with City Planning and Parks. We will also be bringing in the Gateway Mall Foundation. Once we have approvals for a general direction of what and where we can do something we'll move towards creating a management and sustainability plan for those uses and start seeking funds to make it happen.
It'd be really cool if the developers took over designing the Union Station MetroLink Platform, especially underground. Cleaning it up, doing some interesting lighting, and marketing/placemaking, things that let you know you're at the Aquarium.

Seems like 15th-21st street have good access to the interstate and metrolink. They are very close to Savvis, Peabody Opera, City hall, Union station obviously. Would this be unpopular?

At the very least, they could replace one of the "Don't Shake Your Baby" posters with a photo of a beluga whale or something.

It isn't as big as I was thinking it would be. The last report said 1.3 million gallons. Chattanooga is 1.1 mil. I compared them because they each have separate river/ocean exhibits and I thought the one in Chatt was pretty good. But this doesn't look near as big as the one in Chatt. It was two buildings and 3 or 4 stories tall. I was expecting this to take up more of the old mall. I went from being really excited to kind of indifferent. I hope they prove me wrong.
Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. It's a bit disappointing it isn't opening with more exhibition space, but if looking at the floorplans there's lots of non-actuated real estate; the old Hooters/Houlihans space isn't filled at all, for example.
There's plenty of room for expansion if this proves successful (and it's hard to see it not being successful, honestly).

I find the design uninspired. For those of us who went to the old 80's style mall in Union Station, it still looks too much like that eyesore, i.e. they didn't do a full gut rehab and it just looks like someone dropped a temporary looking acquatic exhibit into the middle of an abandoned 80's mall. Hopefully they will do more with this space to make it look more permanent and like it actually belongs there.
