Breaking: #Trump FY18 #budget outline cuts @USDOT $2.4B (13%), kills #TIGER grants, all future #transit starts' $

Yonah Freemark @yfreemark

Trump budget view on transit projects: "future investments... would be funded by the localities that use and benefit from" them.
My gut feeling is that congress, especially the Senate, will have very different view of POTUS budget when it comes to transportation/DOT. For one the TIGER grant popularity in Congress has been there. I thought that was a goner a few budget cycles ago when GOP took the Senate.

Future transit starts might be tougher. Some real money got approved on the local level for transit across the county from LA to Seattle to Atlanta and there will be a fair share of congressmen who will want to make sure Fed kicks in.

If you haven't completed a survey please do! It looks like MoDot has learned from its past experiences with 64. A very Transit inclusive process.

Springfield News-Ledger - With new taxes or tolls unlikely, MoDOT makes the most of what it has
The lack of any fuel tax increase in 20 years may have "put us in a failing position" when it comes to crumbling bridges or low-volume roads, McKenna said, but he believes MoDOT has limited the damage by putting its focus on maintenance. McKenna added that it can cost four to 10 times more to replace a transportation asset than to repair it.

"When you're in a hole, the best thing you can do is stop digging," he said, noting the department has sold equipment and property, cut staff and decided not to expand existing infrastructure over the past several years.

Where can I find additional information on Proposition 1? How much money is it expected to generate? All of the images I have seen have shown the new Metro line extending into the County but I haven't seen any interest from the County to contribute anything. If Prop 1 passes are we guaranteed N/S or will we then be reliant on Trump to contribute federal money? Will the tax ever go away? If they don't build the N/S line where does the money go?

About $10 million a year from Prop 1 would go to bonds funding Metrolink expansion (Prop 1 will generate about $20 million/year). The extension basically goes from Cherokee Street in the south to just beyond the new NGA site to the north. That's of course tentative and that would absolutely be contigent on federal dollars chipping in

best case scenario from Prop 1 metrolink money is for it to be used to enhance current system.

Congestion has been the most and most highly ranked area to be focused on by survey takers. Face Palm.

Thinking of voting No on Prop. 1 to enhance the chances that the MLS tax give away does not happen. Funding for Metrolink and the other things in Prop. 1 can come back next year as a clean initiative and I'll vote YES on it then. I'm sick of the game playing being used to throw public money at mega projects that are supposedly going to "Save the Region".

Rebuilding I-70 is no longer a concern since Hyperloop is coming, right?
Is charging sales taxes then a fare to use transit double taxation too?

Op Ed: Missourians deserve a real transportation dialogue, not a toll road lecture
Missourians have a paid a motor fuel tax since 1924 for road construction and maintenance. New tolls simply tax users twice for using the same roads. Unfairly double taxing our citizens by placing tolls on I-70, especially without a public vote, is a non-starter for many of us serving in the General Assembly.

Our interstates serve as the main arteries connecting the vital areas of our state, enabling job growth and the flow of commerce. Our roads allow our manufacturers to efficiently move products to market, and Missouri farmers to get food to our tables. They enable freedom for our working families to live where they choose, and commute to their place of employment. Missouri simply cannot succeed in building a 21st century economy without utilizing a safe and reliable transportation network, but a real funding solution is needed.

How dare the state charge for roads using a mix of two taxes instead of a single large tax! That's heinous and immoral for some reason!

Not sure if this is where this should go. But tweet about an article in the Tampa Bay paper about our transit system. It might be a letter to the editor/sound off section but I thought it was interesting.

I definitely agree with all of that. I do love the different ticket/pass options.
"Plenty of seating" may sound nice but is actually a negative for me when assessing a transit system.

Keep chasing the congestion dragon!

StlPublic Radio - Buckle up: No major funding increase for fixing Missouri’s roads, bridges
“Fatalities on our roadway system are up, and there are a lot of safety improvements that we’re just not able to get to that we would like to be able to get to,” he said. “That doesn’t even talk about the projects to spur economic development, people that want new interchanges to spur business or things that we need to do to reduce congestion in our major urban centers.”

China Tests a "train" that runs on a virtual track. Could this be a solution here? Maybe a compromise between BRT and street running light rail?

I'd call it improved BRT. Not really too different, save that I guess the computer helps you steer the rear end of it. (Maybe the front end too, but it's hard to really say from the video. I suppose at least by implication.) BRT has always had some advantages and disadvantages. Lower initial cost, of course. And greater flexibility. But also greater fuel costs. (And I do believe maintenance, if you count the asphalt against it.) Very much on the positive side, that should make BRT a more practical option, as it would help longer vehicles navigate more flexibly in tighter spaces. Definitely a bonus, that.

The new video doesn't show as much about where they are in testing, but I think it does a better job of illustrating the concept. I hadn't considered the flexibility aspect of cutting "coaches" in and out. That's actually a nice touch.
