(I can't get the images to show, but if you right click the Image, you can see an alternative site plan the Fox could've used)

Because the Fox owns all of this land, they could've used an alternative site plan- turned 90 degrees and shifted west 100 yards, that would've allowed for the same number of parking spaces, but had a much reduced negative impact on the streetscape. This alternative site would've also allow the Fox to sell or develop the 3600 block of Washington into a mixed use commercial and residential structure- a much more profitable use for this site and a much more marketable site for such a development than the 3700 block of Washington. They could've made more money, fulfilled their parking needs, and helped the Grand Center district in the long run. To be fair though, this would've required Fox Theatre patrons to walk further, but no further than many of them are already walking as this site already is surface parking for the Fox.
I thinks that's a VA parking lot in the area between the alley and facing Grandel Square. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think the Fox owns that or if they do, the VA is willing to lose that just yet.

City Diner was bought by Steve Smith's (of Lawrence Group) restaurant group and is now Stage Left Diner

http://www.saucemagazine.com/blog/?p=46194

It’s not only the theater crowd that Stage Left Diner is after, though. Beracha said he hopes new large developments like City Foundry and upcoming Hotel Agnad (slated to open in 2018 and 2017, respectively) will spur increased interest in Grand Center and Midtown. “We’d love for Midtown to be on the map (like) the Central West End and Clayton,” he said.

It's this type of optimism that is moving things forward... in fact, not very much retail space is available on Grand any more, so it's again frustrating that they weren't planning for the future with the parking garage.

Bruno David Gallery moving to Clayton. "A casualty of Grand Center's success?" I don't think I agree with the basic premise, but here you go:

Great news here, with the Kranzberg Arts Foundation taking over the Grandel Theater. Should bring lots more activity to Grand Center:

Anybody know what happened with the First Night celebration? I went there almost every year with my family during my teens and it was a really cool event. They say they were going to move it because it "outgrew" the Grand Center Neighborhood but that honestly just sounds like a cop out, especially considering that I haven't heard anything about it since.

Huge crane on site of garage, lifting big-ass precast concrete sections into place.

Are they proceeding with the hideous garage or was it redesigned?

They're sticking with the original hideous design. Here's the best they can say about it:

"By accommodating more than 600 vehicles, the garage will provide convenient and safe parking for patrons of all Grand Center venues. Features will include wide driving lanes, three elevator cars in 2 locations; three staircases; two entrances and exits from Washington Ave. and one in the alley adjacent to the Grandel Theatre."

First Night was never so charming as when it was at Grand Center.

When it moved downtown I went but it was not i tomate and/or interesting.

The garage will be hideous, but it's fascinating to watch the humongous pre-cast components being set into place.

Other than a strip of buildings along Grand, the areas to the west and east are empty. Looking westbound on Wash Ave—before the garage cosntruction—there was a drop off like you're at the edge of the world. Was I not obvious?

I wasn't sure, because you referenced the first photo, which has all of the buildings in it, and that block has the Sheldon, Pulitzer, and CAM on it.

It looks like the parking floors are level in the parking garage, rather than slanted in a giant spiral ramp. Is that correct?

A Boston architect recently told me that he heard parking garage designers there are leaning toward flat parking floors, rather than slanted, in anticipation that these garages may need to be converted to something other than parking down the road. This is because parking needs may plunge if self-driving cars cause a decline in car ownership in favor of ride-on-demand services in the next 10 years.

And if that's not monstrous enough, remember that it's gonna be twice that size when it's done!

Sadly, the parking decks/ramps are sloped on the back. They can be seen from the North while walking down Grand. While it would be wonderful to plan for a post-private-car world, I think that's giving 85% of developers more credit than they deserve.

That park looks pretty good. What is going on with the Missouri building across the street, is it under construction yet?

So excited about more green space!!!!! Hopefully they'll tear down the Humboldt building for a parking lot so people have a place to park when they go to the park.
