as far as the plaza, i like the idea of shutting down a street to motor vehicals. i've said it before and i will say it agian, it's the people that make a city, not the cars. the more i can walk about and not get hit by a car, i feel much safer. take a look at the 16th street mall in downtown denver. only pedisterian traffice and busses can be there. and bikes, don't count out bikes. the building is interesting, but i'm sure that is not the real deal. let's wait a few more designs and trash the lettering up top.

I don't think the construction of the plaza involves any street closings.

^Yes, no one ever mentioned anything official about street closings, just that they wanted to know if Locust would be closed. And I doubt the plaza will look like a bunch of trees taken from SimCity. I think that is more to mark that a park like setting will be there.

Wow not to be a critic but those trees in the rendering are really badly drawn. Its almost hilarious.

sorry to get off topic i just had to point that out. it was eating at me.

There is no way that this will get approved with that facade - none, nata. Either they sent you a rendering that was incomplete by mistake (maybe they had one of the layers in photoshop turned off), or they are completely nuts.

Also - groundbreaking in a week? Did they even start pre-selling yet?

Let me guess - you would prefer something made from brick?

I love the sign! Very European.

To make it more European it should be have a giant neon SANYO or SKODA logo.

As a thought?Maybe someone should skin the Keiner Parking Garages to look like the 'wall of lights' at Picadilly Circus.

On every building Donald Trump has ever built.

This is a very common practice, so do't blame them. If you are investing this much i a project I think you DESERVE to promote yourself. It also soes a long way in creating Name Brand Recogiion for future Robert Bros. Projects...such as the recently proposed 2nd tower along locust...

They did this with the Roberts Orpheum and I heard no one complain.

The design will be great. Does it blow your mind? No. Look a the similarly constructed building on Skinker-the 70s floor-ceiling glass tower in the Demun Neighborhood. I think this project will be a modernized version of that style. Works fine for me...

There are more building materials than gray (pebbeled?) concrete and brick is not needed unless we are reintroducing modernism from the 1920s. Aren't there other materials or mixtures?

Actually, TWOTA, Donald Trump doesn't appear to have put his name in flaming red neon colors atop of any apartment or condo building that I can find. Over the entrance, yes; on top, no. Also, the Roberts Orpheum is not a condo.

The building maybe plain and the plaza ugly, but the thought of a new tower is great. Lets hope that the design doesn't keep people away.

What should really worry people is the small sliver added onto the theater. Look at that thing, what is it?

Well, while eveyone's complaining (even though this is great news and will be a great building) I'd like it to be taller. At least as tall as the arch. It's time we have a larger building than the arch so people will get over it. It's going to happen soon anyway. Don't believe me? Reference the Kevin McGowan interview.

I think it's an arcade to line up with the new Roberts Tower and offer sidewalk dining, or at least a covered walkway, along the new urban plaza.

What's the delay??

From the PD (Martin Van Der Werf - 2/16/06 column)

"The wait continues for a new high-rise residential building downtown. Groundbreaking for the Roberts Tower Residences, next to Roberts Mayfair Hotel, was scheduled for Wednesday. It has been postponed."

I am not sure. The Downtown St. Louis Partnership sent this out late Tuesday night mentioning a scheduling conflict...

Last Friday, we sent you an announcement of a groundbreaking ceremony for the Roberts Tower Residences at the Mayfair and related expansion of amenities for the Roberts Mayfair Hotel. Unfortunately, due to a scheduling conflict, the ceremony has been postponed. We will let you know when a new date has been set. Sorry for any confusion or inconvenience.

But anyway, I like the rendering it is a different design than any other building in St. Louis, (the glass design kinda thing I mean)

Sched. conflict? I wonder if they are worried that they might be over shadowed by other recent developments: such as the BV info and the rummored info about St. Louis Centre.

Or maybe Downtown Now is all riled up about the renderings, wondering why they didn't get more needed green space...

It was reported on Fox 2 this morning that groundbreaking is taking place today. They also mentioned there would be 74 condos and a 4 star restaurant.

edit: I'm confused now b/c Vanderwerf said it wasn't going to take place today. Here's another synopsis of the project from Jive City(via email from Downtown Partnership)

JivecitySTL wrote:

Join us at the groundbreaking for the Roberts Tower at Mayfair Plaza, the first high rise residential development in downtown St. Louis in more than 40 years. The $60 million plus construction project will consist of 74 New Luxury Condos with full glass exteriors, 5,200 sq ft of new meeting room and hospitality space, a new four-star restaurant and bistro fronting the new park and providing a unique outdoor dining experience; a full service spa, fitness center and private parking for condo residents.

Roberts Tower Residences at the Mayfair will offer hotel amenities such as room service, catering, maid and butler service, and valet parking to condo residents.

Going back to Framer's post on July 20, 2005 until February 22, 2006 this project has been in the media and pushing through the City's development agencies, review boards, and has now made it to a groundbreaking. I have no idea how long the tower had been conceived, but it seems that Roberts Brothers want to have it started and sold before Ballpark Village and Bottle District which reiterates what other people said. So hurray and may it turn out to be great!

I do agree that the Robert's have nothing to worry about, but I don't think many people were worried about this project being effected by other developments.

If anything it will help it sell. This building will be smack dab between two awesome new retail corridors. It'll be steps away from Washington Avenue, and in the Old Post Office district. How can it not sell well?
