Figured it out.... Danny Meyer is coming to Saint Louis not with Shake Shack but a new concept called Hot Dog Hut.

I think as long as most of the rest of the winter is free of polar vortex cold for the most part and snowpocalypse type storms that hit on weekends many of our downtown establishments will survive January and February--the super slow months in the restaurant and bar business downtown.

So think about that when some of you want a snowstorm so you can go swedding on awt hiww.

Maybe you oughta grow up and realize a mild 40-50 degree winter might save a lot of our downtown businesses!

Can't say who, as it's not my place to announce it, but everyone will be very happy to learn of who is going to replace Takaya.
I don't know about you guys, but I've been long lamenting the lack of a third dueling piano bar downtown..

Seriously, Strange Donuts would be an exciting get. Maybe they're moving out of the Ed Jones dome before the Rams do?

uh oh, looks like things are getting tense down at the Culinaria!

Not everyone is happy with the changes so far. On the website Yelp.com, one customer, identified as Greg P., wrote in December: "This week you took off the shelves all of the affordable, quality products, including most of the Schnucks label items. You replaced hundreds of items with higher priced 'organic, gluten free and natural' items that no one will buy. For one thing, they are over-priced. For another, this is downtown St. Louis, not the east or west coast where they want these kinds of products. Obviously, you don't know your customer demographics or are just trying to force us to change our eating habits."

Another customer, Gabe Hartwig, asked Schnucks on Twitter, "Why can I no longer buy Kraft or store-brand cheese at Culinaria?"

^ on a more serious note, by time spring arrives downtown will really be a freaking construction zone.... serious work should be going on with all these projects:

Union Station Ferris Wheel and Roller Coaster, etc
Arcade-Wright - 800 Olive (282 units + Webster U Gateway Campus)
720 Olive (partial conversion to 111 residential units on top floors. consolidation of office to lower floors)
1900 Pine - "Station Plaza" (87 units)
1115 Pine (unknown # units)
The Alverne Building - 1014 Locust (81 units, interior demo)
Gen Am Building (700 Market) - renovation for Laclede Gas office relocation
601 Washington Ave for National Blues Museum
827 Washington - renovation for Marriot Courtyard (old Lennox Hotel)
1424 Washington commercial/office renovation (formerly condemned building)
Arch grounds & Central Riverfront Trail
Old Cathedral renovation (I believe the exterior will be completed by Spring though)
Laclede's Landing Plaza & 3rd Street streetscape; cobblestone re-laying
Laclede's Landing/Arch Third Street Garage with ground floor retail (current surface parking lot)

Plus who knows what else.... other stuff already in the pipeline include expansion of 14th Street Transit Center and addition to the Eugene Field House & Museum but I'm not sure when work may be set to begin on those. Pretty amazing time.

Do local leaders ever care about downtown?
As some one what works in realesate I feel like other cities leadership tries harder to fight crime, clean up and sell there downtown to companies while our cities leadership just set on their hands.

I often get that same feeling. The majority of people in the region are apathetic towards downtown. The business leaders only care about their own interests, not making downtown a wonderful place to work and live.

The Downtown Partnership did a great job catering to residents and small businesses under Maggie Campbell's leadership. I suspect business leaders forced her out to get "one of their guys" in charge. Now they are practically nonresponsive to the residents and small business interest. It has made me pretty bitter.

I think "apathetic" may be the best way to describe it. The reliance upon tourists and visitors is unbelievably disappointing.

Downtown/Midtown Atlanta's got it going on and they are making me cry!

http://www.bizjournals.com/atlanta/blog ... o-the.html

NCR Corp.'s decision to bail from buttoned-down Duluth, Ga., to entrepreneurial Midtown underscores a cultural shift in the 130-year-old company....

In locating to Midtown — the nucleus of Atlanta's tech and creative class — NCR is making a play for the Millennial workforce that prefer the bustle of in-town living and have no patience for long commutes to the 'burbs.

Meanwhile, we'll be adding hundreds of IT workers for World Wide Tech and MasterCard out in the 'burbs.

This is starting and is already happening with Cortex here. Sadly some are still stuck in the suburban mindset like Energizer and Rawlings who just refuse to consider the city.
Some companies are slowly starting to realize that people under 35 don't want to work in office parks or buildings facing highways.
What will prevent more urban relocation in this city is perception/reality of urban crime.

Prediction: whatever it may be, half of the posters will be psyched and half will be all "eh, i don't get what the big deal is. DT is cool without [place name] as it is. One business won't validate DT"

In the meantime, I would encourage anyone who cares about downtown or the region to try to patronize some of the establishments along Wash Ave. Many of these places are small businesses that are good for the area and the region. Invite friends or coworkers to a happy hour, a night on the town, or have lunch.

I can name 4 possible places that are really hurting and may close in the next 6 months if things don't get better.

Last years cold winter, BPV, Ferguson, and the recent crime in the area have taken a toll.

I go to a lot of places on Wash Ave and none seem to be hurting...except maybe Copia. Can you name the 4?

^ Hiro's owner is another on record as hurting. It takes guts to open a restaurant anywhere as these guy's margins are tough; it doesn't take much to make things difficult to stick even a small downturn out for too long.

I'd rather not. I can DM you what I have heard.

I will say Hiro had a pretty kick a** brunch crowd today. If you haven't been you should try it. Owner is a standup guy that is pushing hard for downtown revitalization. The type of guy people on this board like.

Hiro is amazing. GO if you haven't been yet. Excellent food.
Also, I was lucky enough to go to Tonys last week. The best restaurant in St. Louis (entire region) is downtown. It was incredible. Food, service and updated space.

^ It would be great to get more retail on that most miserable block.... I wonder if they have the 6th St. frontage in mind as the Olive spots seem like they might be rather small for a furniture store.

Putting together 2 and 2 together I figured out what is going into the M/X Building...

rumor of game-changer @ M/X
+ rumor of major tech co. relocating from the Loop to downtown
= Answers.com coming to the old Takaya spot!

Take it to the bank!
