RFT - One More for the Road: Saying Goodbye to the 34 Club
But Bergman remains optimistic about reopening somewhere else in the neighborhood. ''We'll be new and improved, and we'll keep on rolling. Squeeze another couple of decades out of the old girl," he says, looking fondly up at the walls, like she's an old ship about to be dismantled. "I'm totally invested in keeping it going, absolutely. I think people would follow us. You can't go down to Drunken Monkey or whatever they're calling it this week and act like you can here. I mean, let's be honest. They'll tell your ass to leave, that's the sad reality. This is more of a saloon than anything."

Great article. Maybe they can move into the S.M. Wilson office space between the Community Health and Subway on Euclid, or the strip mall @ Taylor & Forest Park Ave.

Good to hear they're trying to stick around, and good thing there's no shortage of available and underutilized retail space throughout the CWE.

With all of the crap journalism on the internet nowadays, it's refreshing to read such a well-written piece.

Looks likes Koman really does want to move forward with this at a fast clip.... permits have been applied for the demo and for foundation work.

That's fine. I don't get the hype over Shake Shack. We've had Steak 'n Shake for decades. Shack Shack burger was better than SnS,but its fries were terrible the shake too small and all of it overpriced. And we have tons of great places to get great burgers elsewhere. Bailey's Range has shakes too.

I think it's apart of STL's inferiority complex. "If only X trendy thing would love us!"

I realize it's not an either or, but I'd take 34 Club over Shake Shack.

^ I've never been so I can't say; but unquestionably it's one of those things that gets people excited and will be a big draw. IKEA-lite. With Whole Foods across the street, that's going to be one busy corner and surely more businesses will follow into the CWE.

And Space Architects taunted me by saying another surprise is coming to the Euclid/Pine intersection.

It's great that Shake Shack is into locating in traditional buildings, and it'll be another signal that the neighborhood is hot.

Shake Shack will be good for the Central West End. It'll draw traffic to the CWE/Euclid and likely more stores and sales.

Yep, it is a hyped Steak n Shake. But keep in mind, they didn't necessarily have burger joints like this in NYC.

They also love Meyer's BBQ (Blue Smoke) in NYC. BBQ is not a common theme in NYC like it is in the Midwest and the South.

This might be stereotyping a bit, but they eat hot dogs, pizza and pastrami. :D

I'm just glad they're putting it in a "real" neighborhood and not someplace soulless like
-Ballpark Village
-Streets of St. Charles
-Galleria
-downtown Clayton

Looks like a second space at 7,600 sq. ft. also is left in 32 N. Euclid:

Count me in the crowd that thought the hype for Shake Shack was far too much. But that doesn't stop me from being excited about this.

I think this goes a little bit beyond any traditional inferiority complex anyways. The guy who founded and runs the place is a St. Louisan. It's not fun to see those people not only go be successful in "the big city" but even when in expansion mode, repeatedly pass us over. It's nice to finally get a hometown nod (just as it was nice when Jack Dorsey finally brought—or announced he will bring—a significant Square presence back to STL).

For me the food was good, but it didn't far exceed anything I've had before. It doesn't match the hype or the ridiculous lines you find in NYC (and maybe other places). But it's pretty good food, and we may not have those lines here. But to be honest, I sort of hope we do. Sometimes you gotta play the trendy game. It can be a sign you've "arrived." And I'm happy to see St. Louis land some places like that.

Those of us who know and love the ins and outs of the city (and discovering the parts we don't yet know) will probably keep primarily going to those places and trying new ones. But this will bring in a different crowd, and that's a good thing.

Honestly, it's kind of like BPV in a way. I don't care that the restaurants are corporate-y, bro-y, and a bit souless in ways. They attract a certain crowd. The issue with BPV is it was built as a stand alone development. Throw 8+ floors (ideally more, but just saying) of residential and office on top of or next to BPV, and it changes everything.

^ Comparing Shake Shack to Steak 'n Shake is silly and inaccurate. But yes, it is a bit overhyped. Worth a trip to Chicago? Sure... East coast? Probably not...

If this is any indication of the popularity of Shake Shack, the one at the new NY Met's stadium, took almost 3 innings to get through the line. It is just known there, that you send one person for the group and expect to be in line at the very least, 2 innings. I know the demand patterns are different in a ball park, but if SS sucked, there would not be crazy lines.

PS_ Now that McKelvey and Meyer have set up shop in STL, it is time for Jack Dorsey to follow suit!
