I don't know a single irishman who likes a sissy little whiskey.
I was speaking to the general European policy of measured shots...

Don't one or two of the states out east still use the airline bottles for mixed drinks in bars? The standard size 750ml bottles are illegal and everyone must use the 1.5oz mini-bottles for mixed drinks...

Salt Lake used to, but I don't think they've done that for many years.

No it's not Utah: it's somewhere else.
Utah has all sorts of strange rules. For example there are no bars, but instead private "clubs" where you must pay a $6 or $8 cover to get in. Plus you must be "invited": but anyone sitting near the door will invite you.
Plus you can't order a double. They can pour you a "tall" drink with a single shot along with a mixer and then put a second shot in a shot glass next to it. Then you must pour the second shot in.
Plus all beer is 3.2% beer and other stuff. But the bars do have the normal 750ml bottles.

South Carolina used to up until about a year ago. I think they recently passed a law allowing normal sized bottles to be purchased.

Oh good God! That is ridiculous. This might explain why I couldn't get a good Guinness pour. "Hmm...", says the bartender, "I wonder why this spoon is hanging on the tap?"

On top of that he didn't know what a snakebite (Guiness and cider) was and mispronounced Smithwicks.

Relax, they havent even had their Grand Opening yet. Once they get settled in and established this will be a great place. Thats funny you mention the way Smithwicks is pronounced. When I was there the bartender told me the correct way to say it (w/o the W) and the actual way a Black and Tan is made. I always thought it was Guiness and Bass but its Guiness and Harp.

Checked out the Dubliner last night. Cool place...pretty much exactly as I expected.
I forgot to check on the pool tables upstairs. Are they in yet?

I assume they will be real pool tables, and not the small ones that take quarters in hoosier bars?

It would be even better if they had snooker tables. That would freak some people out.
Actually, a black and tan can be a Guinness and a Bass. Really, it's 2/3 Ale, 1/3 Stout. A half and half is 1/2 Lager (Harp) and 1/2 Stout. Half and Half is generally considered more of an official Irish drink since both Harp and Guinness are Irish beers.
But if you were to go to a bar in Ireland, they might look at you funny if you order one.

Saw the sign lit up last night. Looks cool.
Yes they would. But (in Ireland) they also take 10+ minutes to properly pour a Guiness.

Went there yesterday, between the Rams game and the Cards drubbing. Here are my thoughts:
Food : Full Irish - A.
Service : A+. The server said this was his first day. Knew his stuff and got the orders in promptly
Crowd : Was very crowded.
Liquor : They were out of Smithwick's????????? Had a half and half (G and H).
Overall experience : A.
Now... most of the bars in Ireland (or most of Europe) are NOT that big. This is a good fusion of "as authentic as you can" Irish bar and our style. The funny thing is, the waiter (whose parents are first gen Irish) was very insistent that he was An American (born here). Kudos to him, but it was a fun conversation with the rest of my drunk friends.
Overall, I am SO glad our downtown is getting a good variety of pubs opening. It takes a mix of different cultures to make any downtown successful.

would this be a decent place to watch the cards game tonight? Do you think they'd have the sound on?
It could be decent. Side Bar, Flannery's and Kitchen K are good options off the top of my head too...

No and No.
I was there last Friday and not only did they not have the sound on, the Band started playing right as the game did.
They're Irish first, Sportsbar second, if at all. The TVs they do have aren't the biggest or best located, IMO.
I'll be at the SideBar. They pour stiff (unlike measured pour Dubliner) and they have huge TVs.

Yeah, we went to Dubliner last night after Jack Patricks was a little too underwhelming, but it wasn't much better. The game was on, but people were obviously there for dinner and not the game. We left and drove to the Church Key in the Grove. There are two large plasmas and an intense crowd for every game there. People were clapping and stomping after every pitch like they were actually at the game.

I'm suprised Jack Patricks didn't have a good crowd. Usually things are good there for road games like this. I know I've been there for a regular season Cubs/Cards game on a weeknight and there was a fun crowd.
BTW, to show I'm a complete geek, those are not plasma HDTVs at Church Key: they're DLPs. When they first opened they were running them with old school standard defenition TV and I showed them how to go full HD. Even sent an email to the owner about what channels were HD.
Yes, I am a dork.

Went there before the game yesterday. They had everything but the baseball pre game show on. Guess they truly want to stay authentic. I am not sure if that's a great idea in St. Louis.
We had the duck breast and Mixed lamb grill. The portions are really "European"
. We had to get more food at the ball game, but I have to admit that the food tasted awesome. It is good for someone who is trying to watch what they eat.
Their liquor selection is good. They have a "small" pool table upstairs and the dedicated band area is good too.
