Here's some (average camera phone) pics of the giant fleur-de-lis being installed on the top of the building today. I snapped them while driving so pardon the poor quality. You can also see the fountain running in the first pic.

The fleur-de-lys emblem is now illuminated and glowing in its neon glory. It looks like they still have some work to do around the installation, but the result is quite eye-catching at night.

The haphazard, unfinished silver skin keeps reminding me of the new Death Star from Return of the Jedi. :P

That's been sitting on the ground for so long I was wondering if it was just going to become a ground sign to save money. Good to see it up. I'll have to check it out tomorrow after class.

The building looks so lonely out there on its own.

I like the aquiduct on the south side... what the heck is that?

It looks reasonably good, but it doesn't belong at Grand and Chouteau. Maybe we could pick it up and move it to the Arena/Highlands site?

That's the thing though. It belongs at the corner of Grand and Chouteau. At it's current spot it is out of place, but in a better context it would look great. That would require opening up the lower floors as well.

That's what I meant. If it were right up to the corner and sited next to a couple other buildings, it wouldn't evoke a more modern office park/research park the way it does.

Unfortunately, it's not an aqueduct or anything equally exotic; it's just a covered walkway which stops abruptly at the Caroline Mall.

It's a great building, but what a waste. It will be 20 years if not more until there's some infill around it. Actually, I'm pretty sure this will never happen. I wonder what SLU's grass cutting bill is . . .

I've often wondered that myself. There are guys out there cutting grass every day. I think every blade of grass gets cut once a week. Rather wasteful if you ask me, but SLU has an appearance to keep up.

I love the design. I particularly like how they connected the tower to the rest of the complex with that triangular designed viaduct, or whatever you want to call it, coming out to the south.

I do agree that there's a lot of wasted space though.

Hasn't it been said and documented dozens of times that due to the research facilities handling of diseases, anthrax and other dangerous agents that the setback and isolation were a requirement for construction?

I gotta think they'll fill in the gaps at some point. We just need someone to step up with another big donation for "Doisy, Phase II".

If SLU wasn't cutting grass all the time Biondi would be villafied like Mckee for being a deadbeat landlord...wait, he already is.

i don't think any of the Wash U Med/BJC labs are "isolated" like that, and i'm sure they handle the same agents. so ...

So you just made that up via assumption?

I would think there would be more protections around the building if that were the case. You must have a proper ID to walk in the building, but that is the only real protection. You could drive a vehicle into it at the corner or the current site. I don't think that is so much an issue. The security is more about people gaining access that should not.

As a Bioterorism and emerging infections research center, this building had to meet post 9/11 homeland security specs. (BioTerrorism is a federal grant, SLU got tens of millions) while I can't find the articles now (not enough time here to sort through all the stuff) I am confident I read that the setback was a requirement.

Regardless, my point is: This will never be filled in. Get over it.

yes, the first clause was an assumption - hence the "i think" part. perhaps they don't handle anthrax (tell you what, i'll research it this weekend and get back to you) but they certainly handle "diseases" and "other dangerous agents." i'll list a few for you after i do the anthrax research.

Back in this thread somewhere, someone mentioned that it was set back partially due to soil conditions at the corner of the site. Don't know if that is true or not...

I've heard that as well. Something about there being waste dumped there in the past. That can be overcome, but I don't know how much it would cost.

I'm perfectly fine with the building in it's current location. I just want to see some low rise urban buildings on the rest of the site. At least at the corner.
