Forgive me, but I love beautiful architecture. Many of the best buildings don't fit into todays use, but I would hope they are never lost. So many great designs from the mid 20th century will be lost and I am deeply saddened by this.

I have seen newer airports that are more functional, but what inspiration in how the ground meets the sky in the main ticketing area.

^ I certainly agree. I just hope that the wish to keep the historic terminal in tact doesn't keep the airport from expanding/improving. I think the outdoor glass enclosure is a great example of this. I think we should celebrate that this new structure is based on the main terminal and will continue its design.

As stated before, I have several problems with the proposed terminal experience project, but none of those relate to the fact that the historic terminal will remain. As I see it, the current space on the upper level is great. The historic terminal is a beautiful building and the upper level remains very functional, if somewhat drab because of the windows and lack of maintenance. The bulk of the problems relate to the lower levels and concourses, particularly the height of the walls in the old baggage claim area, the design and number of baggage carousels, the connection between the A, B, and C concourses and the spread of shopping and retail offerings before you hit security. The space is not functional.

The potential for a rehab of the concourses and the rehab and expasion of the lower levels of the terminal are more than possible without loosing the beauty of the existing terminal building. Unfortunately, the airport experience project does not seem to address many of these issues.

AA recently modified their schedule changes for 9/5/2007. We have retained 757 service to SFO (evening flight) and we got an upgrade from an MD-80 to a 757 for one LAX flight (eastbound only), westbound is all MD-80 service. This could also mean occasional 767 service as this route has been subject to last minute substitutions of 767 for 757 earlier this summer. (The 757s have been getting fitted with winglets on select planes and some cosmetic interior upgrades). The 757s will be like the new 737s once they have winglets and refurbished interiors-I can't wait

AA will not resume seasonal STL-PVR service this winter. Although it performed extremely well, for what ever reason they are not resuming Saturday service, according to DOT documents (see link below). It's a shame as I took this flight once last winter, and if I go back to Mexico it will likely be through DFW. It also appears AA will not operate seasonal STL-CUN service as well.

F9 (Frontier) operates MCI-PVR service and may want to fill this gap from AA. USA 3000 may do the same.

In 1956, Minoru Yamasaki's domed design for Lambert's main terminal became the forerunner of modern terminal building plans. Both the John F. The present four-dome main terminal was built originally with three domes; the fourth followed a few years later.

...good question, and more particularly, not just in numbers but also in destinations, e.g. regional destinations like Iowa, Tulsa, Springfield, Dayton vs. out-of-region and gateway cities like Newark.

Basically, AA flies to very few regional cities where there is WN competition (Kansas City, Omaha, Cleveland, to name a few) Where they do fly regionally, it's almost all regional jet service vs mainline on TW or AA before the slashing of flights. My understanding is that Little Rock will go away later in the year, but FLL will come back (may be seasonal)

ORD is also seeing some fairly significant flight reductions as AA capacity continues to decrease along with more Caribbean flying in winter.

We have gained service back on AA to several markets that were eliminated in 2003. For example: Little Rock, Arkansas was eliminated but added back in early 2005. We have had more mainline service with an additional flight to LAX added in early 2006. Mainline service has been added in April of 2007 to Austin, Raleigh/Durham, and San Antonio. However, we still have a long way to go. We need mainline service to Denver (currently all RJs), new service to Salt Lake City (no service by AA), Phoenix, San Jose (CA), Portland (OR), Fort Lauderdale (discontinued 4/09/2007), and West Palm Beach.

UA has been getting more O&D traffic at O'Hare, and AA has been frustrated with the city of Chicago. I would hope that with our incentive program, we could get some service sent here but I don't see that happening in the immediate future. On another note, many business people from places like Arkansas, Oklahoma, Austin (TX), and many other cities would take Lambert any day for a connecting city over ORD or DFW. They simply don't want to bother with ORD and feel STL is smaller and easier to connect in. Many people in mid sized markets in the midwest used STL as a gateway city to go to Europe, but in 2003 they were forced to venture for ORD, DFW, IAH, etc. If only we could get STL-LGW back....

Right. I don't think AA even has a non-stop to Detroit. They force us AA gold members to fly NW or SW, or take three times as long to get there by going through Chicago. With all the connections in St. Louis Auto operations, and other things like Boeing FCS project work in Detroit lead by people in St. Louis, I'm surprised AA is happy to give away those profits.

Prior to AA's cut backs in 2003, they wanted to retain loyal fliers and upgraded them to Gold/Platinum/Exec Platinum with hopes to retain their business in spite of a limited schedule and regional jet service.

As for service to DTW, with WN and NW holding a significant market share I wouldn't expect this route to resume anytime soon. We used to have a daily evening MD-80 flight to ORD that continued to DTW, but that was eliminated on the last schedule change in April.

Besides, if AA started DTW service many would favor an A319 on NW or a 73G (737-700) on WN to an AA Eagle/Connection ERJ 145.

I used to always end up an a tiny Canadair jet on NW, but I believe now NW has changed all flights to bigger DC-9s, probably to handle the increased business AA is throwing their way. I don't think NW uses A319s to St. Louis yet.

yep, I flew on NWA DC-9s this summer to Toronto on the STL-DTW-BUF and STL-DTW-YYZ routes. However, on the return to DTW from BUF I flew on a A319 and return from Toronto to DTW was on a B757. Then from DTW-STL they were DC-9s.

I do like the DC-9s more than those ERJs and CRJs, plus the engines sound nice, but a bit loud though. :)

I wish STL will see more larger planes than regional jets and B737s. AA has B757s and a few B767s, but we need more of those.:(

NW's DC9s are ancient, but refurbished...good size for the markets they serve.

AA has a few 757s, and no scheduled 767 service at Lambert. Even in the TWA days, the only 767s left were the HNL/OGG/LGW/CDG flights, and maybe a LAX flight here or there.

While NW may not have much A319 service, I meant to say that no one will wnat a regional jet when the can have mainline service. You're right...Currently NW doesn't have any A319s scheduled at STL, but I recall in 2006 I flew home on a late evening flight MSP-STL on an A320...

Actually-I flew on an AA 767 from STL-DTW earlier this year in February. It turns out, AA scheudled a 757 but had to substitute a 767 in DFW. The flight was obviously diverted from ORD to DTW due to weather. We were at DTW for several hours and then continued to ORD. Just thought you would get a kick out of that.

Well, this video is completely depressing. It was taken in 1994 and shows a BUSTLING Lambert Field.

The TWA evening rush out of the St. Louis Hub. 727s, DC-9s, MD-80s, and a 747.

That's funny. My first trip to Milwaukee came about like that. There were weather problems in Chicago, so we flew to Milwaukee to get more fuel. I am a fan of AA, so I selfishly want AA to fly everywhere I go regularly non-stop, which they almost do.

Great find...at least 1 L1011 in there behind the 747, it looks like. The other plane parked at the end of C is a widebody of some sort, but can't really tell what kind.

The nighttime departures out of JFK were also quite a sight as T5 emptied out for all the European departures.

Regional partners hope to add Chicago flights

Mid-Missouri partners want to raise $2 million to attract an airline

BY MORGAN COOK

August 28, 2007 | 8:58 p.m. CST

COLUMBIA — With help from MU and neighboring cities, officials with the city of Columbia say they hope to raise roughly $2 million to persuade a commercial airline to carry passengers non-stop between Columbia Regional Airport and Chicago.

For now, the city is quietly pitching ballpark figures to partners at MU, Jefferson City and the Tri-County Lodging Association in the Lake of the Ozarks area. The figure is an estimate of the money it will take to insure skittish airlines against financial losses in a market where passenger boardings are bottoming out.

Because the negotiations are sensitive and preliminary, the partners said they were wary of discussing specifics until the $2 million figure — broken down as $700,000 each from Columbia and MU and $300,000 each from Jefferson City and the lake association — surfaced during a meeting last week in Sunrise Beach. Jim Divincen, administrator for the Tri-County Lodging Association, confirmed the numbers.

The group believes the insurance backstop is a necessary step in its efforts to secure a 50-seat jet for twice-daily flights five days a week and a single flight on Saturdays, Divincen said.

The group agrees that direct flights to Chicago from Columbia Regional could potentially improve mid-Missouri’s economy.

Because Chicago is a larger hub than both St. Louis and Kansas City, passengers would benefit from a larger variety of flight destinations. For the same reason, the 10 million people living in the Chicago area and the millions taking flights through the city would have an easier trip to Central Missouri.

Last Thursday I was flying back from Boston and we land at Lambert. We sit on the tarmac for a moment and the pilot comes on and says, "Uh . . . I can't believe I'm saying this, but all the available gates are full. We're going to have to wait awhile. Uh . . . this is somewhat rare at Lambert. Sorry, I'm sure it won't happen again."

^ Oddly enough, that happens most times I have flown into Lambert, though maybe it is because I am flying something like Northwest and Continental, who only have two or three gates.

Either way, it ticks me off every time. Sorry to say it, but Lambert is an airport fully of empty gates.
