Has anyone heard any more about meetings with local officials and Southwest Airlines executives a few weeks ago?

This also got me thinking, what domestic markets would be the most likely additions anyone might make from St. Louis? Since what is the busiest route from here that either has no non-stop serivce, or could use an increase in service over current numbers.

Just flew to Charlotte on business and spent a lot of time at Midway.

As far as I know, SWA/Airtrans does not have a direct flight from STL to Charlotte. That gets my vote.

New Terminal 1 glass walkway. High, bright and now reopen again. Lambert-St. Louis International Airport has completed the majority of construction on the renovation of entry/exit 17, which allows passengers and visitors to walk between the roadway and the baggage claim level of Terminal 1.

The second walkway is under construction.

There's a potential agreement with a cargo carrier based out of Brownsville, Texas to lease space at Lambert. The firm (Brownsville International Air Cargo Inc. ) trades with Mexico.

Perhaps no one posted on it because the news isn't final.

Nonetheless, it is still potentially good news for St. Louis' international cargo hub efforts.

Can anyone confirm if UA is beginning mainline service to ORD?

In the current schedule there is Sunday only AM northbound (STL-ORD) operating with A319. It has to do with aircraft re-positioning from the Saturday SFO-STL service. The aircraft remains overnight in STL and then returns to ORD the following morning. In the past UA has operated SFO-STL seven days a week but only operated STL-SFO six days, with double frequency on Sunday. Going forward I would not expect seeing any additional mainline United service in STL, especially with two United Express carriers (Go Jet and Trans States) being based in STL they rotate aircraft that way, much like IND largely (exclusively?) sees Shuttle America express service. Regarding United at STL, based on the labor agreement recently ratified by the Machinists Union, UA is now able to outsource ramp and passenger service employees at STL (and many other smaller stations) and I fully expect them to pursue this opportunity within in the next 6-12 months.

I noticed this Children's Museum project/ rallystl idea last time I was at Concourse C and it looks like it is now happening.

Nice to see. Also, I was flying out the evening after the Bosnia/Argentina match and there were tons of Bosnian Americans at Lambert. Awesome to see and I'm sure the event was a nice boost to the downtown economy.

American will be increasing service to LGA from 4 CRJ-700s to 6 CRJ-700s in April.

That's still embarrassing. Dinky little planes to LGA the only option with AA? I remember years ago under TWA taking planes as big as L-1011s non-stop from NYC to STL.

Hasn't there been a significant capacity increase overall to LGA from here in the last year or so? Is the demand increasing that much? Though it is possible it could be with the growth in the financial services industry in the area which would likely increase travel demand to New York Cityl.

Slightly off-topic, but United just announced that they are closing their Cleveland hub, slashing a whopping 60% of flights at Cleveland-Hopkins Int'l. Ouch. Seems like our peer cities all got screwed by the airlines.

/\ ouch. I'm surprised that detroit is still such a major hub for air transit to asia though. Is there anything in particular that makes it such a good location? From a completely uneducated perspective, it seems like St. Louis would make an equally good transit hub, especially for people continuing on to the south or latin america.

So Cleveland joins the list with St. Louis, Pittsburgh and Cincinnati. Yes, ouch.

I'm just not looking forward to what Charlotte/CLT will become in an American/US Airways merged future.

I've never been able to figure that out. My boss frequently goes to Asia and always seems to connect through Detroit.

Brutal. Cleveland can join the St. Louis, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Memphis club of cities marginalized by airplane mergers.

Juan/Dweebe,

Think Detroit - Asia connection is all about the Car industry. I believe both Toyota and Honda have design/research facilities and of course GM and Ford. GM as a pretty impressive Asia operation and believe they sell just as many cars or more in china as they do in the US. Could be mistaken but my two cents worth. The other thought, Northwest built a pretty efficient terminal in Detroit and assume that has some benefits to they system.

Same thoughts on USAir/AA merger. At some point you have to assume that three hubs between Charlotte, Philadelphia and NY Market doesn't make sense for a cost/economic basis even though it is very convenient for hometown travelers. What amazes me is the fact that Philadelphia and Charlotte are going all in with significant airport investments with Philadelphia making a major push to improve capacity/flight delays on its limited footprint - stuck between a freeway and Delaware River.

Both good thoughts. My boss is a very picky flyer and doesn't have a problem with that Detroit connection.

We were talking about that on a recent trip while sitting at CLT and which one might get the big scale back. Our guess what Philly might get the short end of the deal.

^ Detroit is also a much larger area than ours, especially if you take into account Windsor and Toledo areas.

New York and Philadelphia will serve very different roles in the new American Airlines. New York will be optimized for origination & destination traffic.. people flying NY-London. Philadelphia, while it has a significant O&D market, will be where the connecting traffic is funneled through. STL-PHL-London vs. STL-JFK-London.

The new AA management has said they plan to maintain and actually increase service in Charlotte. Again, Charlotte and Miami will serve different markets... as can be seen by the dropping of the Charlotte-Rio de Janeiro flight.

Of all the former US hubs, I think Phoenix is likely to be most impacted.

^ Greg, I can see your points but it is hard to argue reality after a major acquisition or merger

Pittsburgh, Eventually took a hit as US Airways consolidated around Charlotte
St. Louis, Eventually took a hit on the American acquisition of TWA
Memphis and Cinci, Eventually took a hit on Delta acquisition of Northwest Airlines.
Milwaukee brief mini hub will probably be the loser after Southwest swallowed AirTran
Cleveland, will be the loser of United and Continental merger

I still have a tough time seeing AA/US Airways being able to maintain those three hubs. As far as Phoenix, I still see it keeping the status quo for the same reasons that Delta has kept Salt Lake intact and United has kept Denver intact for the most part.

Now as far as St. Louis, still waiting for the day they announce tear down of Concourse D and rebuilding the E/International Gates. At some point they need to make a clean break from the TWA past and admit those gates in D will never be utilized to the extent that they were built for.

I think Business Journals put together a pretty good summary of changes to the airlines hub and spoke system as it relates to mergers and acquisitions and the impacts as it relates to weather.

Storms like the current one that take out ATL, CLT then mess up the DC to Boston axis are hell with the current hub setup. Storms will mostly take
-a northerly path across the Great Lakes
-a middle path through St. Louis, Indy, Cincy and then northeasterly
-a southern path through Atlanta then slide up the east coast

Taking out hubs like STL, CVG, BNA, CLE and PIT leave the remaining major airline with no options.

Just flew into Lambert from vacation, and after all these years I'm still amazed at how long it takes for bags to show up at the baggage claim. Are the bags carried across the airport by hand or something?

cutbacks on personnel. All airports are feeling it.

In the past few months I waited at least 30 minutes in Kansas City, 40 or so minutes in Orlando, 40 minutes in Portland PDX OR, and the longest was in Dallas LUV - it was almost an hour - seriously crazy!
