Southwest Airlines opens its ninth crew base in Denver

Denver is the carrier's ninth domicile in the nation, where 400 pilots and 400 flight attendants will now start and end each day. Since it is the newest, it is the smallest of the carrier's crew bases. Based on Southwest's explosive track record in Denver, however, employees predict it won't stay small for long.

Southwest's eight other crew bases are Baltimore, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Phoenix, Oakland, Orlando, and Las Vegas.

Surprise, St. Louisans take cheap parking very seriously (I made the mistake of reading the comments):

Lambery airport plans to charge more for parking, other services

Lambert board delays decision on hiking parking fees

I think a better way approach this to build the Consolidated Rental Car facility in place of Concourse D discussed here-- accessible to both terminals -- and charge out-of-towners a fee via rental car companies, the same way we pay for other cities CONRACs when we travel there. And include short and medium parking as part of the facility at today's rates. Then use the space right in front of the terminals for something attractive that would change the first impression new visitors have of our airport/city when they arrive.

IF, and a big IF, American Airlines lasts that long. I see them grounded soon. Over and done.

Nuts eh? The editor of the Biz Journal has been ranting on Twitter against increased parking fees. I don't get it at all. People b**** about the airport not having funding and then b**** if they try to raise prices. This is simple. Supply - demand. They simply MUST increase parking prices.

Honestly $5 so that you can park and either drop off or pick up friends/family sounds right on par with parking costs everywhere these days. It's not as if you have to pay it -- the cell phone lots are to remain free, so if you want to be cheap it's still certainly possible to do so. Of course people would rather the cost stay as low as it currently is, but there seems to be plenty of good reason to give the prices a relook. I'm just finding it tough to get all up in arms over this. Especially in St. Louis where you always have the metro as an option!

Lambert St. Louis International Airport is relocating US Airways to Concourse C from Concourse A. The move will release some more gates to Delta for future use and will eleviate some of the congestion at Concourse A security gates.
Concourse C will have three US Airways gates now.

My Note: If AA is taken over by US Airways - good move too... since AA is already in Concourse C. This may be some insight on the airport commission too.

The Biz Journal is going on an all-out attack on this issue. In this week's issue, their editorial is a nearly 500 word rant about how the increased pricing isn't fair. It amazes me that St. Louis' main business publication does not understand the concept of price and demand! It's really kind of embarrassing.

^ Definitely agree, talk about small ball talk when the discussion should be what to do with the large number of underutilized gates (tear down, move on, do something) to the underbuilt parking for Southwest with a subpar small town metrolink stop, to the lack of a on site consolidated rental car facility to haphazard ingress/egress from the freeway. I have to give credit for Lambert putting money back into the terminals that are being used. But the business community needs an advocate for the investment that still needs to be made outside of the gates and Biz Journal is absolutely failing the airport, business community and informing readers what other successful cities have been doing for their transportation.

Lambert has just cracked SWAs top 10. Wish they'd invest in terminal 2. It needs a sprucing up

^ agree, Of course my idea of right solution is to tear down the exsiting D & E/International Gates. I think that opens up a lot of possibilities including more gates for Southwest, better international gates if Southwest chooses to Int flights to St. Louis (My wife will fly to Mexico City via Airtran which now becomes Southwest - Southwest added international flights the day the decided to buy Airtran), a consolidated rental car and more near gate parking (also better revenue in long term for airport authority).

My fear, the Missouri mentality of why build or do something better when you got four walls already up. The idea that sometimes things get old, outdated and not really serving useful purpose gets loss in the show me state.

Lambert Upgrading Terminal 1 Entrances Following Tornado wrote:

Lambert-St. Louis International Airport is beginning a project to overhaul two major entrances to Terminal 1. Damage from the April 22, 2011 tornado created an opportunity to redesign the terminal’s lower level entrances which will better enhance Lambert’s historic architecture. Lambert is building sleek, all-glass enclosed walkways with generous support from Eastman Chemical Company, as well as insurance proceeds. The glass panels will allow natural lighting to brighten the pathway for the public to and from the lower level Bag Claim. Eastman’s Saflex® and Vanceva® interlayers bring safety, security and UV protection to the laminated glass. LLumar® decorative window films provide a distinct design pattern to the enclosed walkways. The project will be completed in the spring of 2013.

“When the tornados hit our region last spring, we knew we wanted to bring increased safety to Lambert-St. Louis International Airport,” said Eric Nichols, vice president and general manager of Eastman’s advanced interlayers product lines. “Saflex® PVB interlayers for laminated glass and Eastman’s performance films’ Llumar® post applied decorative window films bring both safety and UV protection to the pedestrian walkway project at the main terminal. Our products are used in airport applications around the world, and we are happy these products will welcome visitors to the St. Louis region through our “gateway,” Lambert-St. Louis International Airport.”

Eastman’s Saflex® interlayers were also used in the replacement glass for the Terminal 1 vaulted curtain walls on the upper level, which were also heavily damaged during the 2011 tornado. The Terminal Entrances Project was designed by exp. US Services. C. Rallo Contracting is the prime contractor for the project.

The Terminal Entrances reconstruction is part of the overall tornado restoration campaign by the Airport totaling approximately $22 million. The Airport is also in the final months of its $70 million Airport Experience Program, which will be the largest interior renovation of Terminal 1 (built1956) and its concourses when it’s completed in 2013. Improvements include renovated restrooms, higher ceilings, new lighting, new interior wall and flooring surfaces, new wayfinding signage and digital directories.
As far as I can tell, the "two entrances" actually refers to the two covered exits for arrivals. I am not sure if plans include the departures entrances, but they also are definitely in need of upgrades.

FWIW - just dropped off a friend at CVG this past weekend. It reminded me just how nice Lambert is compared to what some would consider to be regional rivals.

A few weeks ago when I was flying out of Lambert I saw this Virgin Atlantic 767 or 777 on the runway at Lambert. With Lambert in the hunt for an airline to provide St. Louis to London flights, was Virgin maybe doing a test run to get some numbers? I can't think of what else it would be doing there, if it had been an emergency landing it would have made the news I would think.

The Rams were already in London when this picture was taken, in fact I was at the airport to go to London for the Rams game. The picture as taken on Thursday, October 25th and I believe the Rams arrived in London that Monday or Tuesday.

So when you saw it, it must have been the chartered departure for fans going to the game.
Hell, maybe the Virgin staff really liked St. Louis while they were here.

Poor Virgin is in enough of a financial pickle it's hard to see them expanding any service right now:

Virgin America is a different airline from Virgin Atlantic. Due to stupid U.S. laws, the America version is owned by Americans.

Atlantic version makes money and is a top notch carrier.

USA Today had a great article run this week about Lambert-St. Louis International's growth as a major Southwest city "hub". Southwest has been STL's saving grace after American's cuts. The amount of service and destinations from STL today are remarkably similar to TWA's route map from STL (with Cape Air and Air Choice One serving older TWExpress Midwest/Midsouth routes)

It's been a while since I've been in Terminal 1 (last time I was there it was still 'main' terminal), but I used to fly out of there every week and knew it well. Finally had a non-Southwest flight last week and flew out - have to say I was pretty impressed with the cosmetic makeover. The airport still seems like a mid-size airport, but the new lighting, paint and retail spaces make it MUCH more appealing than before. I know that this was done on a pretty tight budget as well so big time kuddos to those that made it happen.

News out of Lambert generally improves these days so lets hope that keeps up.

I guess I missed this in August but I see now that Branson has SW Airlines 737 non-stops to Dallas, Houston, and Chicago, and next year Saturday non-stops to Orlando. Are there that many travelers between Branson and Orlando that it merits a non-stop? AA won't even do a non-stop between St. Louis and Detroit.
