Well that's amazing. You're right. The Yankees have an MLS team. I'm sold. This can happen. The number two baseball team might as well follow the lead of the number one team.
Went out to enjoy the weather and walked past Busch and the Ballpark Parking Lot. They've got both of the upgraded scoreboards in the stadium showing NCAA basketball games on them. Even off-axis with a full sun they're bright and sharp. Very nice upgrade.

Season predictions?
I say Cards have a good season; fewer wins than last year but go deeper into playoffs. Cubs underperform but both the small bears and Pirates battle it out with Cards for the Division.

I'll say they grab a wild card spot. Cubs or Pirates win the division with 93-95 wins. Cards end up around 90.

Attend every single Cards home game for $29.99 a month. It's for a standing room ticket delivered to your smart phone on game days. Obviously, you could find a seat if you really had to sit down. That's a lot of baseball. It's also a lot of $10 beers. It's kind of a crazy concept. I love it.

“We believe this ticket subscription service is a perfect fit for millennials and young professionals that may be a bit more spontaneous in planning their visits to Busch Stadium.”

It's really $35 ($5 fee). It's a good buy if you want to go to a lot of games.
The secondary market has brought tickets down to such a low price, this only makes sense if you either go to tons of games and/or want to go to the one or two really expensive games per month.
There were quite a few games, even weekends with good giveaways or games against decent teams, where the get-in price on seatgeek was like $3 (fees included), and that's for an actual seat.

I was looking up downtown pro sports attendance and it turns out that even with the Rams absence Saint Louis had the highest attendance for regular season of any downtown in America based on the pull of the Cardinals.
2016 Cards: 3.45M
2016-17 Blues: 800k
total: 4.24M
Our closest peer city and also second overall was Detroit with 3.8M fans with 3 major pro sports teams downtown. Pistons will move downtown this coming 17-18 season so they'll likely take the title next year.
I did leave out Denver, which I think is a stretch to call Mile High part of downtown... even Pepsi Center is marginal as it is across the Platte and largely surrounded by vast parking. But if you include that, their 4 major sports teams drew 4.4M, barely beating our 2. Quality; not Quantity. I hope Matheny doesn't mess things up!

It's not panic, it's just the reality of the situation: Mike Matheny is seemingly incapable of learning (or managing). He's had years now to learn from his mistakes, yet he either can't or outright refuses to since he keeps on making them over and over. There's a reason Mo had to Matheny-proof the roster in years past (i.e. trading Allen Craig since Matheny refused to bench him despite terrible play), but this season it's as if neither Mo nor DeWitt care what Mathenaging is doing to the team this season (the Adams in LF disaster, his totally inept handling of the pitching staff 99% of the time, his constantly-changing lineups, etc.) Heck, they even extended him this offseason for whatever reason, so now they'll be hard pressed to fire him. His "leader-of-men" style is getting old real quick.
Even more frustrating knowing that we could've had Terry Francona...

Mathenaging has somehow guided the Cards to an 8-2 record since being swept by the NYY. Let's see if the good times continue to roll during the upcoming home stand against the Reds and Brewhahas.
Cards are in first place.
Yes, there are a gazillion games left, but it's nice to see them shrug off the slow start.

Don't have a memorable season off hand but it might take the winter and spring training to get over the Cubs series from this past weekend.
I'm a transplant Cardinal fan so I can at least take solace in my home state team Twins still hanging by thread onto a AL wildcard spot & that my boss and his beloved Phillies & my co workers beloved Giants truly sucked this year. I enjoyed Giant fans out here in the Bay Area getting their ego deflated a little bit

What the heck was memorable about 2016? You mean 2011? 2006? 2016 was pretty awful, really.

And I took the bait. The hook, the line, and I swallowed the sinker. Sorry. Yes. The Cubs won. I . . . hadn't really forgotten that. It smarts terribly. Even if I have a few Cubs fan "friends" that really wanted it. So I . . . usually? . . . try to be less of a troll myself. But . . . the Cubs, man!? It's the Cubs! Of course, I thought that first rider was supposed to be on a white horse, not a blue one, but sometimes prophecy is messy business.ricke002 wrote: ↑Sep 21, 2017Maybe you're right, maybe I'm right. Anyway, yeah, back to baseball. Maybe next year. As long as there IS a next year.
Actually, this is a particularly stupid baseball season, so despite the fact that the Cardinals have been a major disappointment for all but a couple small chunks of he season... here they sit just 1.5 games back of a postseason spot.
And while it's particularly unlikely, the Cubs are just 5 up on us for the division, and we do still have 4 more shots at them head-to-head.
The best and worst part of the baseball season is that it still matters.

I'm torn, the one off playoff game that allows for two wild card spots certainly puts more teams in play and thus more interesting season after all star break. But one game playoff in baseball? If anything, NBA and NHL need to shorten up their first round playoff series and maybe MLB goes to a 3 game series on the wild card post season
I like the one game playoff, but not because it gives more teams a shot. What I like about it is that it increases the value of winning your division.dredger wrote: ↑Sep 22, 2017Great sentiments.jstriebel wrote: ↑Sep 22, 2017Actually, this is a particularly stupid baseball season, so despite the fact that the Cardinals have been a major disappointment for all but a couple small chunks of he season... here they sit just 1.5 games back of a postseason spot.

The best minor league team could be the best major league team in one game of baseball because the sport is just prone to chance. (Even playoff series aren't really enough games to take chance out of the equation).
Winning your division is now rewarded by comfortably making the first SERIES of the playoffs. If you don't win your division, you might still qualify, but you have to sweat out a winner take all flukey single game of baseball.
Prior to the introduction of the second wild card, the wild card winner, who by definition lost their division, would get a nearly equal entry into the playoffs with the only disadvantages being that they had to play more on the road and usually had to face the best team in the league in that first series. (Even that wasn't guaranteed as the rule used to say two teams from the same division couldn't meet in the division series).
Sorry, I feel like that was long-winded, but basically, I think in most pro sports winning your division has been devalued, so it was nice to see baseball do something that valued it higher—or at least devalued the wild card. MLB likely did it for the profits, not for these reasons. But they still work.

Spring is in the air and the great American tradition is around the corner. Time to truck-attack proof the old ball yard. The bollards are being installed right now.
^ October is around the corner and man is it frustrating to follow Cardinals in September the last several years.
I'm coming to the conclusion that fans from Philadelphia do it right when it comes to pro sports. You mess up, you make a bad play, you don't want to win and so on. it doesn't matter, Philadelphia fans will call them out and boo & heckle their own team during a game.
