The Red Wings' new arena is taking shape in Greater Downtown....
![]()
besides the home ice, "the massive 785,000-square-foot facility will house the entire Wings practice facility; that includes an ice rink, locker rooms, a track and training facilities. The new locker room is three times bigger than that at Joe Louis Arena..."
I really hope the Blues examine relocating their practice facility to somewhere near Scottrade; creating a bit of a hockey town across the street in the city's surface lot would be huge.

Cleveland's Quicken Loans Arena (which is the same age as the Scottrade Center) had a $80 million dollar upgrade in 2005 and a smaller renovation in 2014. They are now looking for another $70 million in public money for a further $140 million in upgrades.

Great game last night. Perhaps not the prettiest or the sharpest game by either team, but a hard-hitting and exciting game. I'm not sure how effective the Blues strategy of prioritizing knocking the crap out of Chicago over creating shots is going to be going forward, but it makes me happy watching it regardless.

A good article from the Post-Dispatch that covers two primary points:
1. The reason for late start times (living on the East Coast and staying up to 1:00 am to watch Game 1 when I had to be at work at 6:00 am, I have no sympathy, but understand the frustration)
2. The growing recognition of St. Louis as a good hockey town and NHL market. St. Louis ranked fourth in NBC ratings for games that the local team played in (relatively far behind Buffalo and Pittsburgh and right behind Chicago) and second in ratings for games that didn't feature the local team (behind Pittsburgh).

Just another reason the US should go to two time zones.shimmy wrote:http://www.stltoday.com/entertainment/t ... aa4d9.html

I wonder if Kroenke was watching. Does this prove St. Louis can support major league sports if the organization has decent owner/leadership?
Kronke knows that STL can support major league teams. He just wanted to move to the much more lucrative market of LA.
19.6 rating last night, highest rating ever for FSN.
What a series. Now let's not pull a Cubs by celebrating a first round win over our rivals too hard only to proceed to get curb-stomped in the next round.

Last night was easily the most impressive Blues playoff performance I've ever witnessed. Granted, that's not saying much since the Blues' playoff history is a long chronology of choking, but still.
On a related note, the Reaves fight is a perfect example of why fighting belongs in hockey and underlines the argument that it actually makes the game safer. The refs were trying to crack down in the third period, knowing that a 5-1 game could lead to some frustration and nastiness, but were still unable to prevent a dangerous and borderline-dirty hit from behind on Pietrangelo. Reaves and the ballsy but stupid rookie from the Stars drop gloves, throw a few punches, and the game calms down.

Good Econotalk podcast on this subject about emergent market rules and norms. http://www.econtalk.org/archives/2013/0 ... sport.html
Although the argument could also be made, because there is an enforced goon code in the NHL it takes power away from both the referees and the player safety administrators because they're not enforcing the actual rules first and foremost, they too are enforcing the goon code.
I've accepted as a hockey fan, as long as there's permissible fighting in the rules/code the safety suspensions and rule enforcement will always be suspect, and that in turn validates the need for fighting. But I believe its days are numbered.

Good article on the Blues....

Regarding the Blues Game 7 victory, I am happy to see them get to the Conference Finals. However, let's not get ahead of ourselves as a fanbase and hopefully, the Blues players. After all, they are only halfway there. I think this team needs to figure out how to keep their pedal on the gas. They cannot have let down games, like game one and the 1st period of game 6. I know each game will be uncharted territory, but they have to look at their opportunity as once in a lifetime.
