If anyone has driven down Compton in the past few days, you'll notice that SLU has trucked in a LOT of dirt for the lot across from the School of Dental Care. This lot is bordered by the parking garage to the west, Hickory to the north, Virginia to the East, and Rutger to the south. From Compton it looks like they're building a giant dirt mound.

There is an Alberici Enterprises trailor on site so I have to assume that new construction is forthcoming.

I haven't heard anything about this through my connections on campus, nor have I read about any new groundbreaking for buildings. Does anyone else have any info?

Could this be the "new athletic field" that Biondi is so graciously building for intramural sports...but it will without lights, a regulation sized field, restroom facilities, or even the promise of it being completely graded because SLU thinks that would cost to much? (this is a true story...let me find the link to the student newspaper article)?

Could be the site of the new Alberici center for sustainability? I'm guessing that would be on the main campus, but who knows.

I initially thought that too, but I agree that the center for sustainability is more of a main campus deal. Especially since it's more of a combination of the other schools than it is it's own separate entity.

The Center for Sustainability is going to be located in Des Peres Hall on the main campus. It is a joint venture between the Public Policy Dept, the Social Work Dept, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, Engineering, and the Business School. Check out the newly launched website: http://www.slu.edu/sustainability.xml.

As for the plans for the Med School property, I have no idea. Let me check with a colleague who is doing research on the role SLU has played/is playing in the revitalization of Midtown and get back to you tomorrow with any news.

I don't know what it is - I heard they are building a track down there - foolish decision if you ask me. But I do know SLU was supposed to get around 100 million from Alberici, but the family took it to court. I haven't heard anything about the result of the case.

Last year, SLU and Alberici reached a settlement after a long battle over SLU’s attempt to cash in its 70 percent stake in Alberici. The late Gabriel Alberici, a long-time SLU benefactor who died in 2002, had bequeathed the stake in his company. The dispute was over the value of those shares. The terms of the settlement were not disclosed, but SLU does not retain a stake in the company.

As I drove by not more than 10 minutes ago, more dump trucks are adding even more dirt to this lot. They really are trying to build it up....it's starting to become a mound now.

Maybe Biondi bought Sugar Loaf Mound and is having it moved onto campus.

More likely he's trying to build a replica of Monks Mound. Maybe even a mirror image. The guy doesn't think small, you know? ;)

I called SLU's Facilities department today to see if anyone could fill me in and no one in the office even knew about it.

The secretiveness of Biondi and SLU really just frustrates me sometimes. Why does everything have to be held so tightly that no one on campus knows what the plan is?

PostApr 27, 2010#13

I sent an email to SLU's design and construction department a few days ago and still haven't received a response....

As soon as I track down someone who can explain what's going on, i'll post it here.

PostApr 28, 2010#14

UPDATE: I stopped by and asked one of the workers what the site will become and he explained that the dirt is being piled up so they can grade 4 blocks for a new soccer field and full sized track. Instead of distributing all this dirt over these four blocks right from the start, due to drainage concerns from the city, they have to pile it all at one location and move it where they need it.

So it looks like the Med Campus will have it's own full sized track and soccer field. This also will eat up 4 blocks of unused land off of Compton, which is great news if you ask me. SLU needs to develop these lots ASAP.

That land, at least the corner at Compton, had a nice commercial/residential building on it a few years ago. SLU ripped it out. I hope they put in lights and security and the whole shebangabang. It could do good things for stabilizing nearby Terry Park, which has been the site of some nasty crimes in recent years.

Stopped by and walked around a bit today; all of the trees have been cut down (minus one or two that are tagged to get removed soon). Just south of the current garden (at the corner of Rutger and Compton), they have been grading the land and have started to construct a staircase of sorts out of old tree trunks down to Compton. Also, it seems as though they have built square planters for a new garden. I would have to assume this would be either an expansion of the old garden or it's replacement.

As for the other activity, Alberici has 3 trailers spread out over the area and have added another giant dirt pile at the NE corner of Virginia and Hickory.

I'll try to take some pics here soon...

Biondi's monthly (ish) message came out today, and he included some information about this project - new athletic fields - and some renovation/new construction to build a new student center on the medical campus.

Below is the (IMHO) huge athletic complex, which I'm disappointed to see doesn't include tennis courts. SLU tore down their tennis courts to build the arena, and they are sorely missed by the University community. By "community," of course, I mean by just one low-level staffer - yours truly.

Also, he released a rendering of the new med student union. Predictably SLU. It's like they think that since Griesedieck is the most visible building on campus, everything they build subsequently has to mimic its ugly 1980s (right?) design. I'm sick of clocktowers and gross green roofing. It looks good on top of the hospital and virtually nowhere else.

PostJun 17, 2010#19

By the way, is the grid in the athletic complex site still intact, or is it already a superblock?

Meh. Not sure why this is needed.

With regards to the green roofs, I'm not a huge fan either. The clocktower was the first structure to have a fake green roof - or peak, or whatever you care to call it. The green peaks atop Gries were added around 95 or so, and everything built since then seemingly has one. I'd rather see copper used if they're going to go with that theme.

I like how the drawing includes the typical SLU fence all the way around the block.

Not too shabby. Better than a couple under-utilized blocks in a relatively dead zone. I hope this brings in more students and builds up the campus overall by tangibly increasing student quality of life.

If I may indulge: You know what I'd really like to see in this schematic?

New housing near this field for students on all those open lots south (left) of the fields. Not dorms, but new freestanding housing, developed & owned by the University and/or private equity partners, built to be leased to non-freshman students. Many colleges across the country have plenty of off-campus housing adjacent to the campus for student rental; not just apartments, but housing, and including urban colleges. I could see a neighborhood of rental houses and mid-rise apartment buildings rising up over here. I'm not thinking frat houses, but I could see something like the infamous Dayton Ghetto rising up over here.

It could do a heckuva lot to both build the image of the campus nationally as well as for commuter students seeking to move out of the basement. Ancillary development could really work here as well as help adjacent businesses, all stabilizing the neighborhood. This would further allow the University to build its total attendance, thus increasing construction on the campus, leading to a huge expansion in both students and facilities.

Incredibly, this could be a great spot for new housing construction, one of the last few in the country.

Am I correct in assuming that SLU owns most of the vacant land south of the new field?

This is really lame. Why can't intermurals use Hermann Stadium? Or failing that, use SLUH's field which is empty while the kids are in class. Or maybe as an urban university, do something radical like using a city park (Wheelfru, there are tennis courts in tower grove park).

That rendering is super depressing, fence and all. I agree with all above that its better than vacant lots. (Are they vacant because they were abandoned or because SLU took them over and made them that way?) I hope this field is temporary and they build some real urban spaces eventually. They seriously should develop Chouteau and grand into a major walkable intersection. Maybe it's too late with that absurd building they put in (Doisy Research Center), but at least Gone Corporate is right on about student apartments.

Green roofs, argh! Chicago City Hall has a green roof. SLU has seafoam paper hats.

That's not even remotely convenient.
