Just like most of the properties SLU holds, it was a neighborhood that could have been brought back. Now we have a giant super block

Honestly, I'm not sure how much that was a neighborhood anymore. My memory is mostly of a bunch of random homes in various states of disrepair, with little social fabric or community around. Roots for that could be called in not wanting to live next to a hospital (with all the sirens 24/7/365), or general building decay; maybe it's from general socioeconomics and the opportunity to get out when they could as SLU came by with a check.urbz wrote:Just like most of the properties SLU holds, it was a neighborhood that could have been brought back. Meanwhile, SLU adding athletic fields is a good thing for student attraction & quality of life.
After all, while Billiken rival University of Dayton has the "Dayton Ghetto", SLU just had ghetto.

From the top of one of BJC's buildings, I recently found my view of the downtown skyline obscured by bright lights in midtown. Oh man, what could those bright white lights be??? oh yeah, sports fields.

Are you implying that's a bad thing?DaronDierkes wrote:From the top of one of BJC's buildings, I recently found my view of the downtown skyline obscured by bright lights in midtown. Oh man, what could those bright white lights be??? oh yeah, sports fields.

Weren't those the field lights from the SLU Main Campus, not the Med School Campus, that you saw?DaronDierkes wrote:From the top of one of BJC's buildings, I recently found my view of the downtown skyline obscured by bright lights in midtown. This would be my guess. And to be honest, I actually like having the SLU athletic fields where they are. I used to live in Midtown Alley and loved seeing the fields on and in use during the spring and fall. The lights and sounds of the games just added to the overall ambiance (in my opinion).gone corporate wrote:Weren't those the field lights from the SLU Main Campus, not the Med School Campus, that you saw?DaronDierkes wrote:From the top of one of BJC's buildings, I recently found my view of the downtown skyline obscured by bright lights in midtown. Yeah, I meant the fields in Midtown. I was going to write more about the vast non-tax paying emptiness that is SLU, but got distracted and just wrote that.
Anyway, this map is super depressing.

^There are many things SLU needs to do to become a stronger player in its neighborhood beginnging with better integration with Metro...but I shudder to think of what Midtown would look like after the past 50 years without a major research university in teh hood...

For those of you who have facebook, SLU Health News has some great pics of the track construction/earthwork and the Education Union. http://www.facebook.com/SLUHealth?sk=notes
I'd post some pics here, but facebook doesn't always play well with picture links.

The track looks great and has a nice skyline view. Best part is that there isn't a SLU fence gating it off! (yet?)

That'll be a great venue to show off our new skyline when St. Louis hosts the 2024 Olympics.

^ It would be awesome if Chicago got the Olympics and we got a few events here. Visitors could scoot down from Chicago (and vice-versa) to visit in under four hours on completed new higher-speed rail.

Driving past the intersection of Compton and Chouteau today I saw what appeared to be utility workers placing markers in the ground on the vacant fenced in NW corner. Not sure what's going on or why. I haven't been able to find any permits issued. There was also N individual who appeared to be surveying.
Driving by today, looks like they had an earthmover of some type and a bobcat. A few slabs of concrete looked to be poured (don't quote me on that...it just looked like a gray slab surrounded by moved earth). I'm hoping this is something more than just a large Christmas display.
It amazes me how the BJC/Wash U medical school campus just grows and grows and grows, while absolutely nothing happens at SLU's med school. I mean really, it's looking like a ghost town over there.

It appears to be shot put and discuss locations for the track tream. Two small bleachers are in place and backstops/cages are being installed. In the short term it's a decent use of land, close to the new track. No sign of a parking lot, lighting, or a building yet.
Serious question; does anyone know the status of SLU's medical school? Is enrollment up, down, the same? How about their national rankings? Is SLU still relevant?
While Wash U pumps millions into their program, SLU tears down facilities and builds ball fields.

Does anybody know if SLU even has a master plan for its campus? I hate what they've done with their properties, but I also think that all of the needless demolition and empty land *could* eventually be part of a pretty cool, modern campus if we grudgingly let them have their way. However, it seems like they're just going about it on an ad hoc basis with no larger vision.
Good observation. What exactly is going with SLU Med? Is it completely moribund because SLU sold it to Tent healthcare in 1998? Because of that do neither the school nor hospitable system invest in the plant/facilities? SLU Med looks increasingly like another St. Mary's or St. Alexius, while Wash. U. becomes a global leader in research and care. The campus is now such a wasteland it would be laughable if it weren't so sad. It seems that you can count the number of actual research/healthcare buildings on one hand, while the empty lots, parking lots, garages, and ballfields grow exponentially:framer wrote: Is SLU still relevant? I recall some discussions a few years ago of SLU wanting to require the hospital. Searching for a source or reference to back this memory up.
