SAINT LOUIS LOVES THE SAN LUIS!

The Love-In was incredible. About 75 people came at one time or another, with over 50 there most of the time. The security guard called the police to come because we were on the grass, and several people that showed up for the rally were wandering around the property (not our usuals, they know better). They very nicely said to stay on the sidewalk, but they thought it was crazy that the Archdiocese wants to tear down the San Luis for a parking. Stay tined for future info, but in the mean time voice you concerns to Ald. Lyda Krewson, the Mayor, and the Archdiocese.

I've uploaded some video of the Love-In to YouTube. For those of you unable to attend, it could fill you in on how the event went down; and for those that were lucky enough to attend it'll give you a chance to relive the experience in all its glory.

Proclamations by Michael Allen and a poem by Jeff Vines:

Post-Dispatch interview of Randy Vines:

It was great to meet some of you; for those I didn't meet I was the guy needlessly wearing sunglasses hoping in vain that the sun would come out. I look forward to meeting everyone else at other events in the future.

It was a momentous occasion. I printed out 400 valentines, which were designed by one of our members, and we distributed them before the Love-In at Maryland and Euclid. We really got the message out Saturday. If we continue then we can save this building.

Many of the people driving by seemed very sympathetic to the cause. There were a couple people who yelled out their car windows that the building should be torn down, but (with the exception of those who seemed indifferent), it seemed like the preservationists/urbanists represented the majority opinion. We just need to keep up the momentum.

There's a nice article about historic hotels in the West End Word "Living" insert this week. It mentions dozens of hotels of yesteryear around the city, but centers on the DeVille. It includes a big color picture too!

I bet it doesn't suggest tearing it down.

Well, the new Archbishop's been named. Let's find out where this guy stands on this.

Perhaps the new Archbishop will still want to tear it down and turn the lot into a pheasant hunting reserve.

...or, perhaps he will entertain better rehabilitation ideas for the De Ville Motel as presented to him by interested neighbors, urbanists, preservationists and parking lot dislikers.

 You always crack me up!

:? But seriously, anyone writing him a letter welcoming him to St. Louis and expressing why the San Luis is important to the CWE/Lindell/the city?

There cannot be a better introduction to the new AB by 'us' than diplomacy. Excellent comment.

I stumbled upon this a few years ago, and just came across it again... I see some familiar UrbanSTL usernames in the comment thread, and at least a couple who are active in the effort to save the San Luis. There are a few shots showing the high wall along Lindell Boulevard between Euclid and Taylor.

Alter boys? Like they're into alternative rock, or alternative lifestyles? I guess I don't get it. . . .

I saw the ads for the cover story this weekend- the DVR is set! 8)

EDIT: I don't know who that was on the commercial speaking in favor of the demolition, but he said something about the San Luis being obsolete and stated that it was "showing its age". He was probably born within a few years of the San Luis itself, so by that standard, how would he feel if someone suggested to him that he's outlived his usefulness?

That was Dan Jay, a hired consultant for the Archdiocese. On a personal level, Dan is a really nice guy.

Of course the building is "showing its age"-- just as thousands of formerly vacant buildings across the city were that were in FAR worse shape than the San Luis before they were beautifully RESTORED thanks to state and historic tax credits. A rather flimsy argument, to say the least.

my dad works with dan jay, so i'm filled in every now and then. it seems to the architects, i won't name the firm, but the building seems to have an unusable foot print. i've asked him to elaborate on that. since i know i can talk with my dad candidly, and i know his real feelings on preservation, i may believe him.

This conclusion was determined by an architectural firm that is HIRED by the Archdiocese. Of course their findings are going to echo what the AD wants to hear.
