^^ 4545 fits in wonderfully!
4545 is a great building, and proves that progressive architecture can be an outstanding complement to the great history that it accompanies. The great historic architecture that this city has to offer is what give me so much inspiration and desire to install new pieces to our existing fabric, and to help hold in place what's become loose because of so much needless loss. Let's do what we can to hold the San Luis in place.
I bet the damn parking lot won't even maintain the building line.
Seriously, that picture is worth a thousand words.

Can city leaders stop this?? Are they even considering it?
It MUST go to the Preservation Board. If we pack the room, we could stop it. That's why you should go to the rally. We could also use help handing out fliers.

slay reads this site, right? you there man? i know you are.
lets just say that developers in the area have offered purchase the building and redevelop it into a hip hotel, etc. but the AD WILL NOT sell. How they are allowed to do this, is beyond me. I wouldn't be opposed to a larger building on this site, but tearing this down for a SURFACE LOT is beyond ridiculous. aren't the numbers of catholics dwindling these days? why in the hell do they need a lot now, they've gotten by without it for years, when their numbers were higher.
when is the city going to decide on this? can anyone stop it? alderman? who is the alderman? Krewson? she better be opposed to this, or maybe i'll consider running.. hmm...

Stopping the demolition will require both a credible adaptive reuse of the vacant building backed by financing, as the AD currently bears all the burden of ownership and right of its ultimate fate, and the outrage voiced by the public at preservation board hearings (as well as out in the city at large, propogating the united message of urbanists and preservationists to save the San Luis) where the permission to demolish this building can be given passage, or the denial of such permit.

^ But it's also certainly true that a smaller proportion of the congregation used to drive. Anyway, if they need parking why sell the San Luis an purchase half of the low-rise suburban apartments along Maryland and build a good sized garage?
^ Because that makes to much sense....but honestly a nice garage with ground retail would be nice.
Sorry, but I think a parking garage, even with retail, is a sucky proposal. We have a perfectly good existing building that should be put to use.
^^^ Not on the san luis site on the site Grover was talking about.

Though ground level retail would make no sense on that block of Maryland. But why not two-level townhomes with a garage tastefully stacked on top/stepped back or just behind? I can't imagine that those apartments are the most profitable/best use of that land.
With the wide zoning setback from Lindell Boulevard, employing the desired Smart Code, Complete Streets type of urban form at San Luis site would require variance, unfortunately, and that's not the sort annoying delay to resolution that the AD would want to hear if it were to eventually reconsider the surface parking lot. The value-in-use is currently as good as can be hoped, and the best chance there is to prevent surface parking is promote the preservation of the San Luis Apartments.

The aforementioned rally on Sunday, February 15th is off. We are now having a Valentine's Day San Luis Love-In the day before on Saturday the 14th. Check out the Urban Living section for more details!
^Possibly, but also for just general marketing.
I was very encouraged by the response to the fliering today. Many people seemed to be concerned; if not for the building itself, for the fact that a surface parking lot is the intended new use. Apparently, Lindell Terrace as a building is very against the demolition, and one of the residents plans to get many of the other residents out for the love-in next Saturday.

Some national exposure!

^ I can't help but think that the scales are starting to tip in the San Luis's favor. Of course "The Next American City" can't save the building, but general awareness is increasing quickly and with a little support we can help enforce some (purposeful) bureaucratic hurdles that may keep the San Luis standing.

Please bring as many people as you can to this unique event!!

People behind efforts to save the San Luis apartments in the Central West End are having an outburst of anthropomorphism over the empty yet highly visible building at 4483 Lindell Boulevard.
“She’s got beauty, style, sophistication and some amazing curves,” says an email making the rounds from a group called Friends of the San Luis. “She’s smart, reliable and the talk of the town. You can’t help but fall in love with her, and being with her on Valentine’s Day makes your heart flutter and your head spin… Never mind that this lady is a building, the San Luis Apartments. You can’t contain the love!”
Ok.
Friends of the San Luis is sponsoring a “love-in” outside the building at noon Feb. 14. As the group says, “Valentine’s Day is when we express our appreciation for that special someone who completes us – the one who has been there for us through all kinds of weather, and whom we too often take for granted.”
Here’s a web site http://www.noparkinglotonlindell.com/ with more information about the San Luis.
........
But this week the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s restriction on the San Luis’ use as for-profit housing was lifted, the archdiocesan spokesperson said. Whether that affects the archdiocese’s decision on what to do with the property remains to be seen.
Stay tuned.
