Lets not forget that it's difficult and expensive to open and maintain a business these days. It really as to be a slam dunk and/or loaded with incentives.

There is a mini CVS in the AT&T tower, as well as a shuttered Minute Clinic. The pharmacist told me they have a lease through 2015 or 2016. Perhaps this is holding CVS back from a full location downtown.

There was a letter of intent for a Walgreens in Park Pacific, but I am not sure what happened to that deal.

They should put a Walgreens in the ground floor of the Century building.

good to know.... there was a rumor going around on that but wasn't sure how serious it was. If true, that appears to be a positive as it likely is just them trying to find the right spot and lease terms. I wouldn't doubt if they are looking at the OPO area as that will clearly have the strongest residential density and a strong retail node.

Some may recall that at one time there was a Walgreens in the OPO area. Was it the south side of the Arcade?

Bottom of Century. Where Culinaria is now.

Then I believe after they got run out of the Century they were in St. Louis Center for a few years before getting run out of there.

Yes, Walgreens and Sbarro were the last things I remember still open in the mall.

Walgreen's was in both simultaneously, FYI. The staff working at the one in the Century were really nice; the others, not so much.

I got a little info on Culinaria last night and they said revenue is up a bit this time compared to last year so im guessing they are fairing ok albeit the recent struggles which i think has to do with the colder than normal winter... There's a Volley ball convention coming up soon and ofcourse this weekends Arch Madness

So if Walgreens or CVS decide to open a store in downtown where would you all prefer it to be located??

Those volleyball conventions draw amazing business to Culinaria. Those kids destroy the snack food and energy drink aisles like bread, milk and egg aisles before a snowstorm.

Around OPO, espcecially on Olive, seems logical and I wouldn't be surprised to see an announcement that one is part of the redevelopment of the Chemical or Arcade buildings. The Laclede Gas Building would also be a good location. One of the M/X spots could work as well but my preference would be for it to be part of a redevelopment of one of the historics.

Those are all good, but I was thinking maybe the Ralway Exchange. It could kickstart development there.

^ Oh no doubt; just doesn't seem as likely soon whereas the other sites are more shovel-ready. Hopefully with the expected spurt of healthy activity on Olive a viable and ambitious redevelopment of RR can begin in the next few years.

The RWX could become the center of retail for DT. I imagine a large pharmacy, a clothing store, some kind of entertainment, an electronics store like Radio Shack, and some kind of store that currently does not have a location in STL yet.

That sucks. I think if you added up the proposed downtown resident increase(even the best estimates) And subtracted VA and ATT job loss Downtown is still losing daytime population over the next five+ years. Unless the city steps up its game.

How interesting is it that it used to be Downtown STL had lots of foot traffic and greater activity during the day and was a total ghost town at night.....but now it's trending toward adding more residents/nighttime traffic and less daytime activity?

My one great hope is that all these jobs losses don't put the Culinaria under.

If the Culinaria pulls out, all the sudden the legitimacy behind living downtown takes a pretty nasty hit.

Fotunatly some said Culinaria is still doing well. SO i dont think that is a worry

Now the ghost town comment. During the day it is a ghost town. A few weeks back when we had a 60 degree day after a miserable stretch of cold. I went out to lunch at noon. I walked from Wasabi(13th) to 4th street and passed one person walking ON WASHINGTON. I looked down the cross streets and there was hardly any foot traffic. I was shocked. Even wasbi, which used to be jam packed for lunch, only had two other tables. Hopefully that was just a one day anomaly.

As a downtown resident who also attends school downtown (and therefore rarely leaves the confines of the neighborhood), you are correct, it is eerily quiet these days. I, too, hope that once the weather improves more steadily, that we get that activity back. I think we will. I mean, as downtown's population continues to rise steadily, something's gotta give right?

If you agree that consolidation of the VA in St. Louis is the right move, then really there were only two options. Move everyone to Overland, or build a new facility somewhere. The amount of available space in the Overland facility was pretty vast from the sound of it. Its no net gain for the region, and a hit to downtown.

Downtown really needs a couple big wins on the jobs front to get back its mojo. The residential market has been to sole bright spot.

DT has had a very bad couple of weeks with the loss of the following items.

* VA 800 Jobs
* Lewis and Clark Statue moving away from DT to another location in the city
* Loss of Taste of STL ( This really is a big deal )
*Loss of Blues Fest
*Loss of Urban Harvest ( I liked this place )

DT has lost it's mojo big time. Driving in the area last night was depressing. Also I know of at least 3 long time residents who are giving up on the area. There sick of it.
