^Just drove by. Three hook & ladders are still on the scene. "Condemned" signs are on all the walls. Stinks of acrid smoke. Dammit.

That is a shame, I really liked Gringo. Hopefully these spaces will turn over fast. Downtown proper needs another good pizza place.
Downtown needs anything at this point. It's slim pickings walking down Washington Avenue east of Tucker on a weeknight. Even some of the new restaurants aren't really open beyond lunch and weekend dinner.

Sugarfire- lunch and dinner
Firanas- lunch and dinner but can't get drinks yet

Yeah, that's what I said, hardly anything for dinner on weeknights. You listed seven places, but Farinas is open Thu-Sat nights according to their website. Havana's is only open for dinner Friday-Saturday. So that brings it to five.dbInSouthCity wrote: ↑Jun 25, 2022East of Tucker you have ;

Flamingo I didn't even know had pizza. Their kitchen seems extremely limited. I thought it was just sandwiches w/ chips.
Hi Pointe closes at 7pm daily, so I guess technically it counts as dinner, but they close the absolute second dinner is over if you consider 6-7 dinner.
So there are four places with full menus east of Tucker on Washington regularly open after 7pm weekdays .

Back in November 2021, we found out about a new restaurant concept on S. Jefferson by Logan Ely called "Smash Pizza."

I haven't heard anything about it since. Anybody know anything?

Awesome, I'm super intrigued by this food concept and by the slow improvements of Fox Park.

Looks like 2023 it is, that was always the case but in their original announcement they mentioned that they may be able to open it towards end of 2022
Not much reason to push and end up opening during the December then bleed off the staff you trained during the January and February doldrums. Not to mention the construction labor shortage. Just say 2023 and hit the date.dbInSouthCity wrote: ↑Jul 25, 2022Looks like 2023 it is, that was always the case but in their original announcement they mentioned that they may be able to open it towards end of 2022
And the restaurant labor shortage. Look at Crow Bar in Soulard. The story I heard was they were pretty much ready for a May opening but won't open until next week because they couldn't hire enough.
That seems like a not-quite-true story as their interior remodel and the significant exterior work on the patio just got to the “looking near completion” state last week. Maybe they scheduled the work based on FOH staff hiring? I kinda doubt it, but…maaaaybe…dweebe wrote:Not much reason to push and end up opening during the December then bleed off the staff you trained during the January and February doldrums. That's just what I heard through the Soulard F&B grapevine.walker wrote: ↑Jul 25, 2022That seems like a not-quite-true story as their interior remodel and the significant exterior work on the patio just got to the “looking near completion” state last week. ^ Interesting. But I have no doubt both things could be true, just based on the general state bar/restaurants at the moment. I'm just looking forward to it opening!
Side note/question: it's been a minute since I've been on the patio of the old Nadine's, but isn't the building directly to the north part of "complex?" I think there was at least a bar on the outside against it. I only ask because the windows on it are still boarded up, and I thought maybe those would be replaced. But again, don't know the particulars and it's easy to spend someone else's money. Haha.

Does anyone know what the incident was that happened at Yaquis on Cherokee? I was planning on going this week, but reviews imply owners were racist?! I need to know if to plan to go elsewhere.

r/stlouis had this story - the video @dbInSouthCity posted - a couple weeks ago. There was a very good summary given, originally posted by Redditor u/story_worm...dbehrens011 wrote: ↑Jul 25, 2022Does anyone know what the incident was that happened at Yaquis on Cherokee? I'm inclined to believe u/story_worm and their account here.so this is from an old friend who works at Yaquis:
“Hi! I work at Yaquis, I have for 6 years and I can assure you that this is a sh*t post. What people aren’t seeing is what actually happened. This happened after Beckie had repeatedly asked this man, I’m assuming his name is Jeff, to please stop throwing the trash from their cricket store in our dumpster over several instances. This then gives “Jeff” the incentive to scream the b and c words at Beckie and harass her and threaten her, then her partner comes outside to help her with the patio as she is being screamed at about how this man, Jeff, is upset that he is being asked not to use a dumpster his business doesn’t pay for which is when everyone starts yelling. No one was told to go back to their country. They had asked Jeff multiple times to go back to his store and to not trespass on our patio since he was screaming curse words at Beckie. Please be cautious what you believe on the internet. No one was ever told to go back to their country, we are a diverse staff and love our community. We are absolutely not racists by any means whatsoever and no one who operates this business or works here would ever in their right mind say anything like “go back to your country” let alone anything xenophobic or racist. Also for those who are confused about the name of our establishment aligning with ownership, Francis’ family is Yaqui Native which for anyone who doesn’t know is an indigenous tribe in northern Mexico/ southern Arizona. So please be cautious for what you believe you are seeing and how it is being represented. Jeff is a sh*t poster looking for clout, feel free to go look at any of his other content. “

truth is probably somewhere in between the two- anyway, their pizza is like a 4/10 so if i want pizza i have about 2 dozen other places to go to first.

I was gonna say, I've met a few of the owners and they certainly didn't strike me as that type, but their pizza seriously underwhelmed me when I went.
Melo's is my favorite pizza.

Didn't Good Buddy's close like maybe 1.5-2 years ago? The Mooby's pop-up there was April 2021, and Good Buddy's hasn't been open since. It seemed like they were closed a while before that even.
Hopefully the liquor permit indicates they'll be open in the evening.
