What's going to suck is that all the unplated cars, stolen cars and temp tagged ones are going to still be flying through red lights and blowing stop signs without a care in the world.

^Did anything come of that temp tag bill that went through the state? I thought that made it through the MO senate already? or did it stall?

If got across the finish line. It will take a couple years to implement.

3-5 years is the guess to actually get the system selected, installed and running.

I like how we can start proposing this again while we can't get sensors on the existing traffic light infrastructure vs the timed lights.  I know it is not simple to implement, but I imagine if folks didn't have the understanding they might be sitting at red lights for no reason, they might not be running them either.  Then there is another complete segment of the population who just doesn't care, of course.

What gives here? Because this generates revenue? There were all sorts of issues with this the last time.

Well at least a fraction of the people who currently run red lights will stop. Maybe not even a majority but any little bit helps

When red light cameras were active the last go around I received a ticket for not stopping before turning right on red when the video clearly showed that I had stopped. My point here is is when I went to court in the city (STL) to contest the ticket the judge was overwhelmed I could  tell he was stressed from probably too numerous persons contesting their tickets. Im not saying dont re institute the red light program because persons will contest their ticket; but  put the infrastructure i.e. the courts  to handle all the potential challenges to red light tickets

I wonder if AI video analysis might be able to help pare down the number of cases/appeals that actual need to go in front of a judge here?

Nope, than to bid to select operator.  This has already been to Missouri Supreme Court and rules laid out

The last major traffic study from dept trans of Ohio  indicates that red light cameras DON'T decrease accidents / public safety. They DO decrease t-bone accidents but increase rear end collisions. The best solution, that dropped ALL accident rates - increase the length of the yellow light. This is a momey grab under the guide of public safety. Street calming measures (narrower roads, etc) increase public safety, actual accountability - police in force yanking unregistered cars and three year old temp plates, Increase safety - this ain't it (IMO).

This was my opinion of the last iteration of red light cameras in MO. That multiple jurisdictions actually shortened their yellow lights at certain intersections in order to induce tickets made that clear.

This time around, the type of driver behavior that needs to be curtailed is blatantly driving through already red lights. Making a longer yellow will not stop that behavior at all.

Cameras *should* be a deterrent. And do both! Increase yellow times *and* use cameras to ticket those who still run red lights.

The challenge here is how to solve a real need to deter dangerous behavior while resisting the temptation to abuse a cash flow stream to greedily increase profits. Cameras can serve as a valuable tool, but STL-area leadership has a pattern of doing the right thing in the worst possible way.

I agree it's a money grab. Hope they took out the part about equitable enforcement.

In addition to the red light cameras, I'd love to see what the city did on Louisiana Ave. and copy/paste it all around the city.

The only reason yellows "aren't long enough" is if the driver is already speeding too fast. Drive a reasonable speed and you won't be caught out by the light.
