Any entrepreneurs out there? I figure the cameras aren't going away, no matter how blatantly they extort us. So, lets avail ourselves of other options. My girlfriend got a $100 ticket the other day for rolling a right turn on red. Total BS, but b*tching isn't going to get her 100 bucks back. There are plenty of technologies out there for beating these things. And they are often cheaper than a single ticket. I posted a link to one earlier in the thread. If anybody is worried about the city extorting their money through cameras, just beat them with technology and go about your traffic-signal-violating business. Map map map map map. [-o<

I know some of the European model GPS units have a database of red light and speed cameras. As you approach one the system warns you with some sort of alert.

Nobody's done it for America yet.

The cameras on Kingshighway, Gravois, and downtown are not red light cameras. Cameras on the signals control the signals like the sensors cut into the street do. The red light cameras have a camera that senses movement, and also the big camera many feet back with a flash that actually takes the picture. There is also a sign warning of photo enforcement.

There is one at Shenandoah and Gravois???? Now I know that these are only for money. That is such an obscure intersection. The only reason they would put a camera there is because the light is super long and there is a complete 180 degree view out onto gravois making it completely safe for a driver to use his own judgement. Not sure how many other streets in that area have a stop light rather than a stop sign to get onto Gravois; definately no more than half. Completely ridiculous that you could get a $100 dollar ticket for using your judgment to get onto gravois from Shenandoah, and then go a few blocks north or south and there is no light and the exact same conditions. I know, I need to follow my own advice. Pretty cool about the Euro-GPS systems. That is definately one way to foil this BS system.

^ matt says that one is just for triggering the lights .. not sure why they need them since they seem to just be (poorly) synced with the lights around them. stop signs would have worked fine.

Looks like they're also adding one at Skinker/Delmar. In front of the AT&T building pointed east is a 18 (or so) foot pole with a strobe light at the top and a camera aimed at the intersection. As far as I can figure it's to bust people who make right turns on red.

There's a no right on red sign there?

I never noticed it before. It's a good thing this is my last two weeks of driving.

Yes, from eastbound Delmar to southbound Skinker.

Last two weeks of driving?!?! You pull a Paris/Lindsay/Nicole and loose your license?

No, I'm selling my car and moving to San Francisco for college. My hope is that it's the last car I ever own, even when I come back to St. Louis.

^I did the same when I moved to Chicago - very liberating! Good luck, I hope it works out for you. If you have an occasional need for a car I am a member of I-go car sharing. It works great, is cheap and convenient. I believe that San Fran is one of the cities they have presence in, if not, I'm sure Zipcar does.

There are a few car-sharing services in San Francisco. But, all the ones I've looked at require you to be 21 (like renting a car). Speaking of car-sharing, does anyone know if the Syndicate is still going to have a car-sharing service? Will it only be for residents?

The red light cameras at Skinker/Clayton seem to be working. The camera on the SW corner by the BP station has the flash working on cars making the turn late from eastbound Clayton to northbound Skinker.

Some sap driving a maroon Civic got flashed. Not sure if they're sending out warnings or tickets yet: I'm not going to find out.

 Drive on Page Avenue, in mid-county from I-170 to I-270, and count all of the traffic cameras!

They're probably not red light cameras. Red light cameras are distinctive. Most cameras are only to watch traffic flow or control signals.

I saw three cars with Illinois license plates run the light at Hampton and Wilson on their way to Dirt Cheap this morning. Thanks for the $300, guys!

Matt's right. Those ones on the real tall posts are all traffic monitoring cameras and sensors. Usually they're pointed straight down and perpendicular to the road.

The red-light cameras are on the posts about 15 to 20 foot tall. The flash/strobe light is at the top and the camera is a few feet below. The cameras are also pointed more down the road. The lower location and where they are pointed enable them to capture the license plate and the face of the driver.

^ Thanks for the description. I ran a red along FPP the other day and was just waiting to get something in the mail - I think it was a traffic camera though. :)

There are also warning signs at the camera enforced intersections. It is a yellow diamond that says it is a photo enforced signal ahead.

Not all are the way I described them. I think the ones in Fenton are posted on the traffic signals. It's a big yellow box with two black circles: one for the flash and one for the camera. But they also have the warning signs.

Noticed the photo enforcement signs and at least one camera at Kingshighway and Arsenal. Is there a list of where these all are now?

Many cars safely make right turns onto Skinker on red at that intersection. This is nothing but pigs preying on drivers because the pigs want their money. There are jaywalkers on Delmar who do far more dangerous acts, but do the pigs prey on them? NO, because pedestrians don't have cash like the drivers do.

You don't get a ticket for making a right turn on red if you come to a full and complete stop before making the turn. You are supposed to check for oncoming traffic and pedestrians as well.

When you are not breaking the law you do not get a ticket.

There's one of these signs at the Delmar/Skinker intersection.
