Correct. I'm surprised that it wouldn't be called plainly St. Louis City if they wanted to get off the United bus. But seriously if we are to get a MLS team (which the "soccer capital of the US" should rightfully have) we better not get screwed with a stupid name ... like Chicago did ... go Fire?

Anyways I was listening to something about this on KTRS a few weeks ago. St. Louis has a female pro soccer team on the way already with talks of building a small stadium in suburban St. Louis to try to be closer to a potential fanbase.

I like St. Louis City, ala Machester City and Birmingham City of the EPL.

But I suspect we'll get stuck with a United, an FC or a Real.

^ I know, and I agree, but I'll still take a Real, an FC, or a United over a Fire, a Burn, a Crew, or a Wiz (what the Wizards were originally called) any day.

Bringing back the statue, I like it. Reminiscent of a version of the Browns logo I have seen.

The logo makes it look like ST LOUIS CRUSADE SOCCER

For now I think the United part of the name is tentative. I'm okay with United even if I'd prefer something else. Saint Louis City would be cool, although it would obviously seem much more appropriate if the team actually played in the city proper.

The logo, however, is absolutely perfect IMHO. I love Eero Saarinen's 630' masterpiece, but I don't think the statue of ol' Saint Louis himself gets enough love.

Not to be too PC, but using "Crusaders" may not be the best idea. For many, many people a "crusade" and uses of it controversial.

Since when did Pro sports teams have to be PC Grover? I mean the Cleveland Indians grinning redskin is one of the most loved mascots in pro sports. Thats why we have the Washington Redskins still. Theyre not subject to Pompous boards that decide that a mascot is offensive to some minority ie. the Dartmouth Indians are now the "Big Green" what a joke. They completely desert theyre history for some stuffed shirts who dont care a bit.

Sorry for the rant (I doubt "Crusaders" would ever even be thought about) but considering how angry the loss of chief Illinawec (sp?) at U of I made people, Im pretty sure most people around here wouldnt mind a mildly PC mascot.

A British Christian youth org called The Crusaders recently decided to change its name to The Urban Saints.

The team will be called the St. Louis Jihadis well before they are called the Crusaders. As we all know, St. Louis is a Democrat/Liberal city. And liberals have a tendency to defend their enemies while attacking themselves. "Oh, they can't be that bad. They're only doing what they're doing because of us... We're to blame!"

Just look at the recent announcement by a Roman Catholic Bishop in the Netherlands, informing the Dutch that they should use the name of Allah instead of G-d in mass when referring to the infinite one. Very nice, and while you're at it; maybe you should call your place of worship a mosque instead. Ref: http://abc.net.au/news/stories/2007/08/ ... ion=justin

Not only that, but it sounds too much like a super hero or a 1950's gang from Happy Days.

Even if it's percieved by the public as 'real' (pronounced reel) like 'not fake,' it's still pretty cool.

'Cause STL in all its brick and grittiness is 'real' and not one of those new, flashy fake cities.

If we are basing this on "Saint Louis" as in King Louis IX of France, I don't think we want to go with "Crusaders" given that he lost every Crusade he was a part of and was even captured by the enemy (ironically the Egyptians) one time (which is why is one of the patron saints of prisoners).

Here are some other names based on Saint/King Louis:

Saint Louis Lieutenants - He was commission a "Lieutenant of God on Earth" by the papacy when he was crowned King and he took that role seriously, which is probably what explains his crusades.

Saint Louis Gothic -- For the style of architecture he commissioned in churches (although I would be a little concerned with the implications for the attire of fans)

Saint Louis Architects -- Louis was very fond of architecture, and that would also pay homage to Earo, Eads, etc...

Saint Louis Plague -- It is believed he died of the bubonic plague. Or Epidemic, as was mentioned earlier.

Saint Louis Canonites -- The only King of France to be Canonized (maybe a sponsorship deal with Canon Cameras).

Jurisdiction de Saint Louis -- Louis put France in legal order with the King's court having appellate jurisdiction over all cases within French territory and he updated much of the French regulatory system. For this reason there are images of him both in Congress and in the U.S. Supreme Court. Since Cooper is a lawyer, it seems fitting. Saint Louis is of course also home to the 8th Circuit. It also has a bit of the "United" theme to it. I sort of like this one. Then you could still pick up a nickname that fans use like magistrates, barristers, Whigs. The cheering section could dress in black robes (hot in summer) and bang gavels. We could call the referee the Justice of the Peace. We could have a lot of fun with this one.

Anyway, I would love to see the team have a French theme. I don't think we exploit the French roots of this city enough.

They can't pronounce Gravois, Chouteau, or Des Peres properly either, but that never bothered anybody before...
