I think at one time they had renderings of it? i could be wrong

There was a rendering, but those close to the deal said that there was never a real plan to build it. Biondi just wanted green space between his two campuses.

I've attempted to read through all these posts and on other sites like Nextstl to gather the full story here. I remember the battle over the Pevely site and how it ended up coming down. I thought SLU had later decided against it, after threatening to move out of the city if they couldn't tear it down! What is wrong with the powers that be at SLU?

Tearing down everything on both campuses, putting up those hideous, cheap looking signs with fleur-de-lis on EVERYTHING and now those horrendous blue lights everywhere. They should take some cues from Wash U IMO and get with the program. Perhaps they have a really, really, really long vision that I'm incapable of?

^ Main part of the Pevely building is still standing although the later addition on the west fronting Chouteau was demo'd along with the rooftop sign as well as the stack. The building seems to have been boarded up pretty nicely with the exception of the western facade which is completely exposed.

As to what is in store for the medical campus I can only hope that the new administration sees the wisdom of the modern urban campus movement which is to re-orient themselves to the surrounding community and streetscapes. They have a tremendous amount of property and therefore opportunity for something special (for example they entirely cleared the expansive parcel to the north that could be well-served by Metrolink).

^ With that location and an already solid stock of buildings-love the red-brick main building of the Medical School on the east side of Grand and the taller building across the street, they could really do some good here.

I like the building they put up at Grand and Chouteau overall, except for that fleur-de-lis on the top! And, the grassy lot around it is like 3 blocks long! Hideous! Do you know if they have any plans to build on other parts of that lot?

^ Not under the Biondi administration as green lawn and fountain was his aesthetic. Again, we'll have to see how what the vision of the new administration may be -- and also how much growth may be expected for the campus in the coming decades... other than the mysterious ambulatory care building, I'm not sure how much else was being bandied about for new construction.

Here's an interesting little snippit from SLU Facilites 2014 Report (page 18 under "Master Plan Preparation"):

http://www.slu.edu/Documents/facilities ... _Final.pdf
• Complete the preparation of a master plan for the Medical Center Campus, incorporating plans for ownership of current Tenet-owned properties and development of new medical facilities being planned on SLU-owned property north of SLU Hospital
• Prepare and issue RFP for Master Plan for Frost Campus to be developed in parallel with the University’s strategic plan
Bolding is of my own doing. I won't speculate too much, but at least it's good to see somewhere that SLU is looking at a master plan for this area, including new facilities.

Any updates on this? I keep hearing rumors about SLU buying back the hospital but everything just seems so secretive. Apparently the new president has the medical facilities high on his priorities since it a huge source of income for SLU. Apparently he referred to its current state as "unacceptable". I would love if they released some sort of master plan for the campus soon.

I am so tired of driving through Grand and Choteau everyday. It is one of the most depressing intersections considering what it could be. Freaking captain Ds, 10 acres of Biondi's park surrounding Doisy and half of Peveley just staring you in the face laughing at you. Gahhhhh

^It's really, really bad and honestly should be embarrassing to SLU. What an awful entrance for prospective med students touring from the main campus. Yikes.

Per Planning Commission May agenda, SLU is now planning a new ambulatory care center between Hickory and Rutger west of Grand. Not on the Pevely site.

I believe this is all vacant lots, no (more) demo required...

I hope they have the sense to build it closer to Grand. Hopefully this request reflects the required zoning changes rather than the entire footprint of the ambulatory care building.

And you know who to thank for that, right?

Per VanishingSTL (July 27, 2011): SLU Med Plows Down Blocks of Nearby Homes

This almost lines up with my initial suspicion -- that SLU would demo Pevely, then build the center across Chouteau anyway where they'd already cleared and graded the land. I hope the City insist that they more effectively secure the Pevely building now. I predict a loooong wait before anything happens there (which will probably be a parking lot and fountains).

Fountains require too much operating cost. A smattering of slap-dash sculpture installations would be perfect though.

It's amazing how far SLU's medical school has fallen behind Washington University. Over on Kingshighway, they're investing literally billions on new facilities, while SLU seems to be fading into irrelevance.

Seriously, is their program even respected anymore?

The medical school itself is very healthy. SLU had a great match list this year. Besides the name power, I don't think SLU is much behind, if at all behind WashU med school.

As the far as the hospital itself... It's outdated and frankly somewhat embarrassing. Tenet has put 0 dollars back into the hospital. They're a terrible organization. It's a shame SLU sold it, but there's rumors of them buying it back.

Also.. WashU is waaaaay more loaded than SLU so there's that to factor in as well.

It could be curtains for the Pevely

StlToday - With $1 billion poised to flow into projects near campus, SLU wants development control
There’s still likely to be some opposition. For instance, Heimburger indicated the remaining Pevely building and Missouri Belting building near the southwest corner of Grand Boulevard and Chouteau Avenue are probably not going to be preserved.

“We haven’t finalized the plan, but it’s likely those buildings are not to be kept intact,” he said.

Let me see that plan first. I think it's bad PR to say, "We want control of the land!" and not have a plan that is rolled out at the same time.

I wonder if getting development control means SLUH will no longer have to contend with the Preservation Board and be able to sidestep the preservationists like Cortex has been able to do repeatedly.

At this point, I'd just be happy that the land is put to some use, as opposed to being a grass field.
