Interesting point about the glass window walls. Having some height phobia's does make me hesitate a bit. I guarantee we'll never be on the balcony! The only condo's left at the 4545 building don't really have views, (ok, there's one unit that has a horrible view of the tenement building next to it, about as depressing as living there)

As to the demographics at the Chase--we walked through the Sante health club and it looked like a younger set. On the flip side, perhaps an older (quiet) neighbor is a good thing as this is for a med student.

The only thing that wasn't redone at the Chase is the windows, they were replaced in 2002. We walked the private parking garage and the spaces were huge. There were two spots, one in the private garage, and then there's a second spot in another garage, and I just got those plans, and there's a separate garage door to that one too. Unfortunately we didn't walk the garage at the Park East. The finishes at the Chase were more high end-- Thermador & Bosch appliances, frameless shower doors, etc. (of course with a corresponding price tag)

A back door to Starbucks would be fun. I'm worried about how bad the winters are... and the need to stay indoors. But I'm also thinking the lofts will have a bunch of new restaurants/etc which is a plus.

Don't worry. Winter is virtually nothing here. We had 2.5 feet of snow for the entire season this past winter, which was WAY above average, and people were acting like South Alabamans in an absurd panic. Subzero lows are pretty rare if you look at the last 15 years of climate data. Most of the (very short) peak of winter it bops back and forth between 25 and 45 with occasional swings up into springtime temperatures. StL has candyass winters.

re: 4545 Lindell...am I wrong to consider "tenement" as synonymous with "slum"? Neither of the buildings bookending 4545 Lindell are tenements (by my definition). As a matter of fact, they are incredibly well-maintained, grand apartments from the early 1900's, complete with servants quarters, parquet floors, plaster fireplace surrounds, and imacculately kept front lawns.

re: Park East Tower...I heard today that Starbucks is closing their location there, and the Maryland Avenue store (further north in the heart of the CWE) will remain open.

I think techinically tenement just means that it's a property rented to multiple tenants, but it certainly has conotations of being more like a slum than a luxury rental building. While it may have been a terrible word choice, the real point I think was that views of buildings less than a few feet away cannot be considered million dollar views.

Too bad about the Starbucks but I'm not sure who was going there. There is a LOT of coffee being served in a 10 block radius.

^I dunno. He/she clearly said "about as depressing as living there." This person either thinks all old buildings are housing projects, or all rental buildings are housing projects.

I saw on the news that Starbucks is closing 600 stores nationwide.

^Doesn't matter at all if it is a location that they deam one of their bottom 600. Sunk costs.

I believe I heard that most of the 600 locations were ones that recently had opened. Hope the stores in Loughborough Commons and Chippewa and Kingshighway are safe.

I'm out of town now or I would just do this myself, but has anyone walked into the Starbucks and asked?

There are at least three coffeeshops within site of that one, another starbucks on Maryland and another starbucks in the B&N at the Wash U med center. There are probably too many coffeeshops in this neighborhood.

Will someone ask the manager in that Starbucks if they are closing and report back here?

^ The morning manager at the Maryland Plaza location told me that the Park Plaza location is closing. She was thrilled that her location survived the "cut", and had begun her campaign to reassure her customers that her store was staying around. Since I'm a regular at her location, I have not ventured into the Park East store to verify the info, but then I don't think it's necessary.

I was a little surprised when the Starbucks in the Park East Tower first opened, because there was a Starbucks within 2 blocks in either direction along Euclid (Maryland and BJC), not to mention the abundance of good coffee in many other shops within a 30 second walk of the tower.

It is interesting to watch Starbuck's initial plan of oversaturation recede to a more 'normal' coverage. I wonder what will replace it. I am looking forward to the Qdoba that is allegedly going to occupy a spot in the Park East Lofts.

Wouldn't that be over saturation on Qdoba's part, as they have a store probably a mile away at Lindell & Sarah?

Wasn't Dunkin Donuts supposed to be unleashing a massive campaign? Looks like a good spot to try.

Its official...the Starbucks in the PET will be closing. Its unfortunate as they recently opened this location. Hopefully, they'll return soon. Heres a link to the story: http://i.usatoday.net/money/industries/ ... s-list.pdf

To update the earlier discussions regarding the pool, I have received official word that the pool should reopen by August 1.

Plenty of time to work on my deep, dark San Tropez tan.

I guess that was a wasted Pink Floyd reference.

Yes, the pool has reopened and is nice.

I cannot confirm Qdoba and would also be interested in further information.

I've been in the Penthouse a couple of times (did some work with the artwork). It's obviously amazing. My favorite feature is that it has walk-out terraces on all four sides! It's a unique space, and not for everyone. Note that it has 6000 sq. ft. of space with five bathrooms, but only two bedrooms.

This penthouse appeals to a specific person - one who likes to shower while surveying the entire city.

What a shame to waste an amazing space on a terrible decorator.
