Interesting.

I wonder if the move is more a preventive step to stop some other national upscale mall anchor type merchant from moving in there? Stores like Carson Pirie Scott, Van Maur, Parisian etc.

I think it is beacuse Nordstrom has found St. Louis to be a great market, not to stop another store from coming in. The only store that competes with Nordstrom and would be somewhat of a threat is Von Maur, and I do not think they would have been able to afford the price at the Galleria. Parisian is being bought by Belk, which is nothing special at all and Carson Pirie Scott is really not upscale at all. Back when Nordstrom opened at West County, Nordstrom executives said that if the location performed well a 2nd location was possible.

If those other stores want into this market, I am sure that they can find a way. Besides, isn't someone on here always talking about the super-seceret expansion project at the Galleria? Maybe that will include a new anchor.

What I find more intersting is that it will be a Nordstroms, I wonder how much steam this addition may take aways from West County? I mean that was the one unique thing about West County. Sounds like a great move to help keep the Brentwood strip as the premier shopping area in St. Louis.

Nordstrom's is a great store. However, I hope they have a better selection than the one at WC mall. I've been to other Nordstrom's that had much better men's shoes and clothes than the one here.

I hope so too. I'm not exagerating when it seems like 90% of the West County Nordstrom is geared towards women.

I just want to point out to everyone that Nordstrom's move into the Galeria isn't a definate yet, according to the story in the business journal it was confirmed by someone in the industry, and not Nordstrom's itself. So who knows when it'll be official.

It sounds more like a done deal than a rumor, here is a quote from the article....

"Nordstrom plans to open a second area store, in the former Lord & Taylor space at the St. Louis Galleria, according to retail industry and real estate sources. When asked about the scenario, Nordstrom spokeswoman Amy Pobst said the company didn't have any plans to announce, and Galleria General Manager Earl Doresset said "I don't have any updates I'm in a position to share with you." But other independent sources said the Seattle-headquartered department store company will fill the 115,000-square foot location, which Federated Department Stores Inc. sold to Galleria owner Genreal Growth Properties in March."

I am betting that nothing will be officially announced by either Nordstrom or General Growth until a final lease is signed.

Great news.

I don't think Nordstrom would be filling in at the Galleria if they thought it would hurt their WCC location. Also, Westfield seems to be a tiger. Seems like they are aggressive about protecting their properties' bottom line or they'll sell - like they did Northwest Plaza. The expansion at Chesterfield is looking good, but Westfield needs to update the interior, I think.

I think the plans by Westfield for WCC will help make the center a unique destination.

Also, the galleria's value is sure to jump because of this. I can feel another expansion coming on. Chicago-based General Growth Properties is a retail heavy hitter and other upscale retailers might want in this corridor, but where would they go?

New retail space is inevitable.

While I agree that Westfield would never sit idly by and let their properties get trounced, I also think that if Westfield has any notion that WCC will compete with the Galleria as the region's premier shopping mall, they would be wise to stop that thinking.

Even though it's not official, I think it was safe for the STlBJ to break the news about Nordstrom's plans for the Galleria. Since I prefer that mall to West County Center, I'm very happy with the news. I knew it wouldn't take long to find another anchor, just because the Galleria is still the most desirable mall in the region despite some fierce competition.

I would've liked to have seen Von Maur locate there, but you could be right about the price tag being the dealbreaker. I'm bummed that Parisian is being acquired by Belk- as I'm a fan of the former and indifferent toward the latter. Carson's (aka Bergner's in downstate Illinois) may not be upscale, but I prefer it to Dillard's and would like to see at least one location here.

The rumors are rampant...

Nordstrom's wants to demo the current sight and build a larger 3 story "A" store.

Nordstrom's wants a glass walk bridge from the store east across Brentwood.

Why would Nordstrom want to take on the liability for a skywalk? Better to let the mall property owner deal with it, and any related accidents/ muggings/ "oh I slipped and fell now I'll sue" problems.

2010? Is this because they're waiting for the I-64 construction to finish?

I also wonder if they'll tear down the old Lord & Taylor space and start with a fresh slate?

It looks like it will be a newly constructed store. The part about a great mix of retailers, entertainment, and restaurants makes me suspect it will be part of a rumored Galleria addition that has been mentioned on this forum in the past. The 2010 target date is enough time for such an addition to take place and there are not a bunch of restaurants around the L&T wing of the mall now.

Any new rumors about the size/scope of the potential Galleria addition?
