I would hope that everyone who was against the Century coming down will REMEMBER the CENTURY and NOT park in this ugly parking structure.

I would rather park 1 block away across from the Roberts theater, and as I walk out I will view the lovely urban space that was created across from the OPO.

There is also talk of a Schnucks moving into the retail area, I stopped shopping at Schnucks 2 years ago and go to Dierbergs for groceries.

Why contribute to the pocketbooks of these crooked developers and use the garage?? :?

I dont imagine they ever considered City Grocer and what impact a Schnucks would have on them.

If they move in they should be made to help City Grocer relocate.

Which high road requires you export your tax dollars from the City?

What???

Should Barnes & Noble consider the impact to Left Bank Books? Should Outback Steakhouse consider the impact to Shannon's? Or Ponderosa? Should The Dubliner consider the impact to Flannery's?

If the booking rate at the Orpheum stays the way it is, you may be able to park in the "Roberts theater" sometime not too far in the future.

Umm, phobia, you may want to check citywatcher's location. Don't forget that more than 85% of the region's population lives outside the city.

I believe he was referring to the fact that Dierbergs refuses to locate in the city. Nothing more.

I'm not trying to be a jerk and am asking nicely. But why do you (and some other people) reply above the quote? It's kinda like playing "Jeopardy".

You can do whatever you want, it just makes it confusing. It looks like this sort of order:

1. "innov8ion": Thanks, more room for me to park!

2. "citywatcher": I would hope that everyone who was against the Century coming down will REMEMBER the CENTURY and NOT park in this ugly parking structure.

Correct. Schnucks spends some of their money in the city. and enables us to pay our taxes there. Dierbergs does not.

No problems, it's a style preference. Some people prefer newer comments first, others prefer the original comments first. It probably shouldn't matter as long as usage is consistent.

Some of us might even like them in the middle. 8)

I walked by this garage recently and I'm a little torn.

Buildings all around the garage are under renovation or have been renovated. This garage will serve a good purpose and I really think it will be utilized. I could be wrong I know that.

Since we have to move on, the century is gone and will never come back, I'd like to know your feelings on the new garage. Is it an appropriate facade? Are you pleased with the look? Do you think it will help the immediate area?

A side question, do you know when construction will commence at the plaza just north of the OPO?

I'm still very upset over this. Aesthetically, the garage is fine, but still-we replaced an architectural gem with a garage, and no facade can make up for that fact. There are hundreds if not thousands of empty parking spaces in the garages within a few blocks. It's true that if a fantastic national retailer opens up in the space, I'll be a little less upset when I walk by, but at this point it still kills me to think about what happened.

Overall, a very, very poor chain of events.

I don't know about garages north or west of there, but the stadium and kiener garages always seemed to fill up M-F, 8:30-5:00. Not that that justifies taking down a building. I'm just saying that the parking probably is needed, and would have to go somewhere.

Now my question is: Who let Mercantile / Firstar / US Bank tear down whatever was in front of their tower just so they could pave it with fake bricks!

My window looks over both stadium garages. Maybe the insides get pretty full, but the tops are mostly empty except on game days.

What is the utilization of the newer garage (with the rims welded onto it) on 7th and Pine?

Aaah! That's where the Ambassador was!

BTW, tangent: Wasn't part of "Escape from New York" shot in the Ambassador?

Nope, that was the interior of the pre-renovation Fox. Other scenes were shot inside Union Station, and I'm pretty sure the climactic scene was on either the McKinley or MacArthur bridge.

when i finally lead the revolution all those responsible for the demise of the ambassador and the century will be lined up and shot - I might spare Slay - since I think he's done a hell of a job all things considered .... I might also throw in those who let the Holland building go under ... and while I'm at it I might as well settle my own personal pet peeve amd slaughter those responsible for Twain's "iron triangle ....

I'm still taking members by the way - if anyone wants to join my junta just PM me.

If the garage was needed for the OPO area, there was a perfectly good substitute location to the north of the OPO, instead of the Century site to its west. Today, this alternate site still remains nothing more than a surface parking lot, with the Roberts Tower at Mayfair Plaza seemingly going nowhere, and our downtown hardly lacking in open space or needing yet another urban plaza. In addition to the sick irony of this surface lot still remaining as-is, I can't wait for the added insult to injury when Walgreen's (the Century building's last tenant) is announced as going into the Ninth Street Garage.

You know. Sometimes I absolutely hate this website. It is very informative and that alone brings me back again and again. You are like a drug that pumps in my blood.

There is a feeling I experience when I see some of the jewels lost to demolition in the name of progress. It is one of fear for the future, sadness for the lost past, anger at those responsible, and disgust for those who didn't do anything about it. Losing a historical building like this isn't so bad when it is replaced by something of equal value, though not always possible, in least in the Lou.

Thanks for posting that link to the Ambassador. Nostalia is a cruch for those w/out vision for the future. I never saw this building in person. But damn, i long for that building.

:(

I believe it was shot on the old Chain of Rocks Bridge.

That's Serra's Twain, which looks like an iron triangle.

My dad pulled out old home movies last year and one was of the sculpture's commemeration ceremony, with all of those responsible milling about.

It is also interesting to see views of downtown in the mid-1980s.

Was by last night and there seems to be glass put in on the South first floor. There always seems to be work going in. Any clues on completion of the garage and then when potential ground floor tenants coming in?
