VM, eh? I'm surprised they don't sell naming rights. VMWare Bridge has a nice ring to it.

Kind of the same way the Post Dispatch hangs onto "Highway 40" for dear life instead of I-64.

Stan Musial Veterans Bridge was passed by the US House and Senate. Expected to be signed by the President today or tomorrow.

I've read a few newspaper articles (Belleville is the one that comes to mind) on some Illinois politicians still think that it should only be the Veterans Bridge and that the federal government has no control over the name (due to the way the federal transportation dollars were distrubted to the two states).

Has anyone else noticed the ?fountain? being installed at the east terminus of Mound Street just south of the new bridge? Not sure exactly what it is, but my guess is a fountain. Any word?

esign rendering, but

I suspect this is an installation to mark the history of the Big Mound. The prior marker was pretty pathetic. My recollection was that the MODOT budget for this was not terribly high on this critical site of our history but it should be an improvement. I don't know what was finally approved so I am not sure if it will be a fountain or not.

Interesting, I wonder if they will remove the mound monument on Broadway.

The mound monument on Broadway is being removed, and new marker of some sort is being built under the new bridge at Broadway. MODOT is working with the Mounds Heritage folks on it. I haven't been by there in a while. I'll have to check by there when I get back from vacation.

Curious to hear what you think Matt, it doesn't look overly impressive as-is.

Bridge is getting a nice white coat of paint.

Per the newriverbridge.org site:

"October 1 , 2013: Crews have finished constructing the driving surface and installing the cables on the main span. Crews have built the concrete barriers and are working to place a two-inch latex concrete overlay, paint the towers and the anti-vandalism devices, place the electrical cables and install the lights and signs. The project is on track to be complete by early 2014."

Looks like there will be some decent aesthetic lighting of the bridge, which is being tested out periodically before the opening in a few months:

Paid for by public and private sources. It would also be nice if private funding could pay for lighting up the Eads, if only for next year's 250th.

^ I find it disgraceful that the arch is not consistently lit from dusk til dawn. I cant count how many times I've crossed the river at night to see one of the world's greatest monuments barely visible in darkness. I also think civic progress needs to come up with a plan to relight the Eads and MLK bridge, maybe even the facades of some our largest buildings. With the advent of solar power and LED lighting, I'd imagine it would be economically feasible. I see smaller and less prominent cities with skylines and bridges lit up like a circus. Time to step into the big leagues St. Louis.

Totally agree. I mean, even the bustling metropolis of Alton, IL can light up the Clark Bridge consistently....

They used the new bridge for 2 of the "beauty" shots when coming back from commercial break during Sunday's Rams/Titans game.

Goat, I couldn't agree more about our poor lighting. This was especially infuriating last Monday night. The media had been talking for weeks about STL as the "epicenter" of the sports world and we could have really capitalized on an expanded audience looking at some unique shots (aerial and street) of downtown. Instead, both ESPN and FOX do their part by filming the images.....and downtown looks dark and dead. From TV I was very disappointed when there were the best attempts to show density (low aerial from northwest with Arch in background) and it failed to impress because there were only faint outlines of a skyline.

I've already written the mayor's office and don't expect a response, but it should be mandated that for prime time sporting events, almost every building should have it's exterior facing lights on. And as above, the bridges need to be lighted. That kind of stuff is a no-brainer. The target audience of those games last Monday included a lot of 20 somethings who represent the key demographic we are trying to attract-and if we can't get them, at least we could put our best face on. To make matters even worse, the opponents' audience represented both coasts and our image on TV likely helped cement an unfortunate opinion: STL is a sleepy little Midwestern town with a national monument.

Opportunity missed by both teams that night as well as the city.

I think these views have been expressed in the past. You can't necessarily blame the city for not getting the Arch or bridges lit. The Arch is the NPS's territory. So its up to the Feds to light it. The bridges typically aren't lit because of the barge traffic. That could be dictated by any number of agencies, Port Authority, Corps of Engineers, Homeland Security, etc. So its a simple task to light those specific items because there is probably a lot of bureaucracy to go through.

I dont think the city should be able to just mandate a building to be lit up the way they want it just for "sports". If its a private building they should be able to make that choice, not everyone has to support all of STL athletics.

^I agree. I don't think it would hurt to encourage it as well as site the reasons why a business might want to light their building but to mandate it is a very heavy handed approach.

Even though only half of the bridge is lit-up for testing, you can tell when it is fully lit, it is going to make a major impact on the St. Louis night-time aesthetics.

I also agree that all of the bridges across the Mississippi river should be lit from sundown to 12am. ALL OF THEM. The Mississippi River is part of St. Louis' front door. It's a legendary river - America's Nile. It's what made the city. The city's "welcome mats" are its bridges.

What ever infrastructure is broken that prevents lighting should be fixed to make it happen. The city manages to find money for every thing it wants to happen.

The Bernard Dickman aka Poplar aka Wm. Clay, Sr. bridge should have some LED ornamentation on it like this replacement bridge in Minneapolis.

Saw the new bridge east tower lit tonight coming into city from metro east. Beautiful and exciting.

as for espn and fox news shots last week from the blimps... both stations did both cities NO justice. Bostons shots were minimal too.

I've always wondered the same thing. But based on my travels, I can honestly say that Missouri has some of the most poorly-lit roads in the country, even in urbanized areas.
