Would love "St. Louis Gunners" or St. Louis anything, really. Would despise anything with "Inter," "Real," "Sporting," "United," or anything of the sort. I don't even like FC. It should be SC. We call it soccer on this side of the Atlantic, not football. It's MLS, not MLF. I hate all those MLS team names that ape after the European club names.

Would you like the team if its name was, straight-up, "Together St. Louis"? No, of course you wouldn't, because that would sound utterly ***** ridiculous.

I think my first choice would be just, "St. Louis SC." St. Louis Soccer Club. KEEP IT SIMPLE.

Welp... looks like my first try posting this didn't work. Let's try again!

A STL ownership groups seems fairly simple to piece together. Peacock, DeWitt, Stillman, and multiple minority owners from the Cardinals, Blues, and area businesses would make a easy decision for MLS. And a stadium isn't a huge roadblock either as a MLS team could easily play a year or two at Busch, SIUE, or even an expanded Soccer Park or SLU venue. All St. Louis needs is a group of owners saying they're interested and I think the ball would get rolling extremely quickly.

A quick skim through the old early-20th century St. Louis team names shows more FCs and ACs than SCs. St. Louis Central Brewers FC deserves a comeback.

All of those guys have been chilling in the St. Louis area since before the MLS's last round of expansion. They didn't step up then, so why should we expect them to do so now?

More evidence that MLS is a money making investment. MLS has proven it's not going to fold and that it's able to play with the major 4 leagues.

Not to mention with the Rams exiting the St. Louis region, now is the perfect opportunity to try to gain some of that extra fan revenue.

Would love to see it happen, but I'll believe it when I see it.

Can someone remind me when MLS is looking at next expansion round? Still isn't for a few years, yet, right?

Just a few historical/State themed ideas:

Inter-STL (Like that one)
STL Gunnars (Former team name)
STL Mules (Mule is the state animal)
STL Flyers (Spirit of St. Louis)
STL Masoners (STL Brick)
STL Sting (Bee is the state insect - popular stl name)
STL Crinoid (State Fossil - hehe)
STL Mine Dogs (Dogtown/Purina/Dogwood Tree)
STL Brewmakers (Beertown)
STL Lagermen
STL Berliners
STL Rivermen (Definitely a good one)
STL Ragtimers (Blues/Jazz)
STL Mound Builders (how STL got started)
STL Gaels (Irish heritage)
STL Natives (Tribute to our Native American Heritage)

PostJan 14, 2016#34

FYI - "MLS is currently at 20 teams, and the league plans to expand to 24 teams by 2020.[1] The league plans to add its 21st and 22nd teams in 2017 – Atlanta United FC and a relaunched Los Angeles team. Additionally, MLS plans to add Minnesota United FC (MLS) in 2018 (or earlier, if Los Angeles is not ready in 2017) and Miami, pending a finalized stadium plan. Expanding and establishing a bigger national footprint is seen as essential to securing television rights fees needed to reach MLS's stated goal of becoming one of the top leagues in the world by 2022.[2]"

STL if it came together quickly - could be that 24th team by 2019/2020... but that might be a pretty big stretch.

PostJan 14, 2016#35

Most likely if STL is any part of the MLS... it would be a part of the 2020-2024 expansion to 28 teams. A lot of time to prepare.

"Expansion was on the mind of Major League Soccer owners at Saturday's Board of Governors meeting.
MLS owners announced support for expansion to 28 teams, with the process and timeline will be unveiled at a later date."

Hard to see STL not being one of the 28 given the circumstances, but I guess we'll see.

If STL gets MLS, what's the team name?

Love the one about resurrecting the St. Louis Steamers and blowing the steamboat horn after goals.

I think Cleveland already has that name secured if they get an MLS team.

A Couple more possibles

STL Pilots (aviation history, and river boat history with dual mascots Twain, and Lindy)

STL Storm (not sure what league but the name was used for a few years, I think back in the nineties. It also is nicely alliterative)

Of yours I like Lagermen and Rivermen the best :D

I too like Lagermen and Rivermen.

Otherwise, good brainstorming, but a lot of them sound like minor league baseball teams or WNBA teams (Storm, Sting, Mine Dogs).

I think that's just because they're unfamiliar.

My buddies dad owned the St Louis Sting when I was in high School. I went to a lot of their games. I never really cared much for the name tho

I say we go cheesy....

To boost our pride, Saint Louis Comeback
If NGA stays, Saint Louis Spies (Patriots have a patent pending on that name, btw)
or Saint Louis Espionage

but I really hope Florian Kupulent and UCBC own the team... we'd be all set with
Saint Louis Schnickelfritzers, aka The Saint Louis Schnicks!

Some $$$ things to consider

Expansion fee: $100,000,000 to $125,000,000

Stadium Cost: $150,000,000-$250,000,000 (50/50 public/private?)

Staff/Players/Offices/misc operational costs: $10,000,000-20,000,000

So in conclusion who has $215,000,000 to $240,000,000 locally to get this off the ground. Cost has been the ONE and ONLY issue thats kept STL as a non MLS City....nothing else.

^ yup... I don't think there's any doubt a solid ownership team could arise here, but the question is will it and how much public subsidy would they expect?

Comes to mind that "Bottle DIstrict" land north of the Dome might be a cost-effective location, btw.

I think a site adjacent to Union Station, constructed in conjunction with the realignment of the 22nd St interchange would be hard to pass up. We'll get some surplus land for free from MoDOT, some tax credits from the State for the rest of land acquisition, $50-75 million from the City/County/State for stadium construction, LHM (owners of Union Station) will chip in another $25 million, and we'll crowdfund the rest by selling shares Green Bay Packers style.

The announcement of the impending move by the NFL's Rams from St. Louis to Los Angeles made news in the sports world and even MLS is following those developments closely.

MLS Commissioner Don Garber was asked whether the city of St. Louis, which is now home to two major professional sports teams — Major League Baseball’s St. Louis Cardinals and the National Hockey League's St. Louis Blues — is now on the MLS expansion radar as the league looks to expand to 28 teams.

“There are many cities in the US and in Canada — though we're more focused on the United States — that can support an MLS team and have owners who want to be involved and cities that want to be engaged with those owners on a stadium,” Garber said. "And St. Louis is one of those cities.

"We obviously heard the news [that the St. Louis Rams are moving to Los Angeles] like everybody else did, and we're tracking that news very closely,” Garber continued. “I have yet to speak to the governor or the mayor [of St. Louis], but we have been in touch with the group that was leading the effort for MLS and I think it kind of gives a little more momentum to that city than perhaps before the Rams left."

As far as other potential expansion cities are concerned, Garber said there was “no update” on Miami or Sacramento, but that there were “lots of discussion, even recently” with the ownership group in Sacramento and that Miami’s situation was “very real time."

“They have finalized an opportunity to purchase land,” Garber said about David Beckham’s proposed ownership group in Miami. “We like the site, we've been down to that site and we think it would be a good one for an MLS team. But there's still work to do. Unfortunately there's no more news today than there was over the last couple of days. No update."

When it comes to expansion teams that have already been unveiled, the MLS Commissioner allowed for the possibility of Minnesota United FC joining the league as early as 2017.

“It's a possibility,” he said. "Nothing's been determined yet, but it's a possibility and a decision will have to be made on that soon."

The only way any American pro league is going to allow a team to be community-owned via selling shares is if they start in 1923.
