The Owners of Lush have signed on the dotted line for a 10,000 SF Restaurant/Night Club at the corner of Cardinal and Olive (3037 Olive)

The Building was home to a Movie theatre 70 years ago. Some time ago it was sold and a mezzanine was build over the back half of the theatre..

This multi level look with almost 30 foot ceilings in the front half are going to make this a must see venue when they open.. If the owners can get the right chef this just might become a very special St.Louis destination!

Tenative opening is June !! :D

The building has already completed the demo phase with critical items ordered a few months ago .. so the 3 month timeline while aggressive should be doable..

I'm hoping to announce a few additional restaurants in that area very shortly.. It's about time Santo-Bento has some company just east of SLU!

And remember, most music you hear in clubs, no matter what style, is top 40.

ya if they mix in american top 40 tracks, then you would be right. Many house and trace tracks from across the pond. And it typically takes a few years for them to get over here.

First, let me say that I have worked for some of the largest nightclub developers in the US (Alacarte-Chicago, Bigtime/Crobar-NYC, Miami, Chicago). My area of expertise covers the gammut, with emphasis on nightclub space planning, design and SLV (sound, light, video) installation.

Here's my quick critique of the plan:

1. The restaurant aspect is not a focus. The layout is not conducive to dining... proper bottle service tables do not function as dining tables and vice versa. Unless food is small plates or another sushi place...

2. You enter right onto the dancefloor and are forced to transition across the dancefloor to enter the club. Dancefloors should not be traffic corridors and should not share space with the main bar. And definitely, you should not be on the dancefloor right when you walk in the joint!

3. The focus of the entertainment (the DJ) is located two floors above the "dancefloor" and offers no visual connection to the dancers.

4. All table seating noted in the venue is for bottle service only. For a place the size of Nectar or Mandarin, this is fine. But not a 10,000 square ft. nightclub. You will never fill all 35 tables in the STL market with bottle service patrons.

5. Carl Nappa as sound consultant sounds like a winner. Maybe we will actually see decent sound reinforcement with EAW or Funktion 1 speakers. East Coast guys get it. It will be loud when you walk in, though.

6. Interior design should have been contracted out to someone outside of STL. Nothing against the hometown choice, just don't expect a cutting edge finish.

Good luck with the new venture!

Actually, serious nightclubs presently tend to play progressive house and electro in major markets worldwide (including the states). Trance is pretty much dying with the exception of some big name trance DJ's who are riding out the trend (and continue to draw well, especially in smaller US markets like STL).

European releases comprise the majority of tracks, but there is no lag time in statewide exposure at proper clubs. STL DJ's such as Gary Mac, Jeff Hopkins and Kid Delicious are playing new tracks the week they are released. However, most STL DJ's play it safe and play the same ten popular dance songs from the last five years...largely because it is the only way to please the locals without playing mainstream hip hop. Usually you can hear these same 10 songs at a hockey game...so nothing special there.

Top 40 is more for the bottle service lounges and "one step out of college" clubs... where the patrons are not dance music enthusiasts. Hope this helps.

Thanks for your insight .. However, The DJ booth sits on the second level

and is right on the dance floor.. I have also seen this set up where a buffer of tables directs the incoming partons around the dance area and it can be very effective..

The design is being done in concert between the owner and a local firm ..

With the Ideas coming from Restaurant Clubs he ran in Vegas.. :)

2nd level is better, but DJ's should be on the main floor in a booth raised no more than +4. "Sky-booths" have not been a design element for almost 10 years. I know the Vegas market very well and can not think of one place with a second level booth (currently).

The entry could be helped with a drink rail or tables as you described, Mark. Obviously, the developers are trying to take advantage of the clear-span ceiling height for dancefloor location... Here's a solution...I would channel entry through a hallway left of center and try to eliminate the dump right on the dancefloor. Bottle service tables could go against a wall at the front of the space, which would no longer be an entry. This is really a big deal, as the mystique of entering the club is completely lost within the current space plan.

Sounds like and exciting project, though!

Kudos to you, Mark, for making Midtown a hot new entertainment destination... I love what you are doing!

I thought prog house was dying as well. I haven't seen as much prog house in the last 3-4 years. STL is a horrible trance loving city. Trance, for the most part, is garbage. There are still a couple producers that can do it right, but those are few and far between.

I'm into a lot of electro now. And Breaks. But I'm still holding true to my roots in progressive, when there are good tracks out there.

Any suggestions on good stuff out now?

Prog is really morphing into the whole electro thing. I like the fact that artists who had been doing epic stuff with 2 minute breakdowns are now actually writing songs which relate to the dancefloor. Check out Palao Mojo (coming to STL soon), Trentemoeller and St. Louis based X-1. The X-1 track, produced by Justin King and Rob Lemon, is (or was) in the Top-10 at Beatport.com. I never really got into the progressive thing, but there are some good things out there...

Here are some of my current favorite artists/producers: Ed Kane, Jimpster, No Assembly Firm, Santiago & Bushido, Spirit Catcher, Trackheadz and Lord Street Heros. Stompy.com is a great source for legal downloading... enjoy.

new thread?... It's exciting to hear others discussing electronic music. I think that most people think "techno" (as the average joe refers to it) sucks. I used to really wish for the day that StL would get a trance/dance/house station but that never/never will happen.

As far as keeping up with the hottest new tracks. I would suggest listening to Sirius Area 33

http://www.di.fm I frequently listen to the trance, beats, dj mixes streams. You can purchase a subscription but the free streams are great!

http://www.Beatport.com is one of the few sites i've found to download. Check the charts for what's popular.

http://www.dance-tunes.com is another, but it's a euro site.

There is a program you can download called streamripper. I recommend that for ripping live streams.

As for what I genres I like, I've been big into electronic music for nearly 10yrs now and I still don't know how to catagorize half the stuff I listen to. All I know is that for the most part I love house, trance, progressive house, and breaks and I don't like ambient, minimal, gao psy, techno, happy harcore, drum and bass.

more later...

I'm a big Trentmoeller fan. I loved his remix of Royksopps 'What Else Is There?' Also, Royksopp had their song '49 Percent' remixed by Angello and Ingrosso, I think that was one of the best tracks in the last few years. And I've been going to beatport for a couple years now.

I just wish that we could get a decent dance club back in STL. Velvet rans it's course, but they used to get really great national acts. I went to Dante's and just wasn't impressed.
